    MacBook Air not updating

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 09:52 PM PDT

I've recently purchased a MacBook Air the previous owner said he didn't use it for a few years so when I turned it on it obviously needed to be updated..

Problem is it won't update & I've tried a few times. Current Software on MacBook right now is 10.6.5

I even have the little usb that comes wit it to reformat it & I tried that & it still didn't work

If anyone can point in the right direction or if I'm missing something please let me know .

    Thank you

    Used MacBook?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 09:27 PM PDT

So I plan on going back to school soon and I need a laptop. I've used my friends and families MacBook's for a while and have been obsessed with everything about them. So I have been dead set on getting one now that I'm in the market for one.

My budget is $600 maybe a bit more. Obviously I'll have to go with a used one. The only one's I've seen on Facebook, LetGo and online marketplaces are usually from 2012 to 2015.

My question is; how old is too old? When do MacBooks become obsolete? I'm wondering if it's worth it to buy a different brand laptop or if I can get a good one in that price range?

    Any suggestions are welcome, thanks!

Upgrade MacBook Pro 2015 or Replace

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 08:57 PM PDT

Hello there! I'm currently running a MacBook Pro Mid-2015 with 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM. It's working perfectly fine right now except that I'm running low on space. Unfortunately I am not able to move the data to an external drive because I have a very large Photos library and Music Library that I need to keep internally for work related reasons. I am aware that I could move the libraries to external drives or SD cards, but this wouldn't work in my specific situation. So I do need to upgrade the internal hard drive instead of moving the data to elsewhere.

I'm considering buying this 2TB SSD and adapter so that I can upgrade the hard drive:

Would these be the right SSD types to use with the Mid 2015 MacBook?

That said, the total price is about $290 USD. Am I better off investing this money into the 2015 machine or should I hold off and buy a new 2020 MBP that has what I need in the late summer this year (~$3200 USD for the specs I would want to buy as my "dream machine") I'll have the money saved up by then. My gut says to just keep the 2015 and do the hard drive upgrade since the 2015 is still working good for all of my needs except internal storage. The only other concern I have is whether Catalina will be the "last" OS supported on the 2015 model. If I upgrade the $2015, I'd probably intend to hold onto it for at least 1-2 more years.

Type of intensive work/play I do:

    • Lots of photo editing (800GB Photos Library currently stored in iCloud); can't move it out because the app is so useful for cataloguing and I don't want to use Google Photos.
    • Virtual Machines
    • Gaming (mostly AAA games from the last 8-10 years; not really any recent AAA games from the last 2 years).
    • A lot of video file conversions (thankfully I'm able to store these on external drives)
    • On any given day/time, I'm generally using 50-75% of my 16GB of RAM. That's why I'd consider jumping to 32 GB in my next upgrade.

Your thoughts and/or confirmations on what I'm thinking are much appreciated! Thank you!

Upgrading Specs on Mid 2015 MBP

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 02:34 PM PDT

I wanted to see if I should replace my 2015 MBP to a new 2020 MBP or upgrade the parts I have on my current one.

Here's my spec on my current MBP 16gb RAM 500gb Storage i7 intel 2.5

What I really want to upgrade is 1tb of storage and if possible get more RAM perhaps up to 32gb. As well replace the battery for longer life. I'm aware some of this might not be possible, and if it is what SSD, Ram, battery do you recommend?

    What are you thoughts?

Mac fan/ temperature question. Should I be worried?

Mac fan/ temperature question. Should I be worried?

Whenever there isn't a PC available I game on my Mac laptop (Minecraft) and whenever I'm on the game the fan gets louder, which gets me worried that It might cause serious damage. I wanted to know based on the attached image, is it dangerous to continue to game on it or should I ignore the fan getting louder? I think the temperature is in Celsius. I saw mixed responses online. Thank you!

How to get the charging chime like iPhone has, but on a MacBook

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 03:07 PM PDT

Hey, so I was doing some research into getting a chime to play when I plug the charger into my MacBook and I came across this article - Charging Chime. In the article they explain that you need to put this command in terminal - | defaults write com.apple.PowerChime ChimeOnAllHardware -bool true; open /System/Library/CoreServices/PowerChime.app & | -

I tested it myself and it does work (2015 MacBook Air 11")

    MacBook to TV via HDMI

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 03:02 PM PDT

Hi. I apologize if this is bad form because I did post this on a tech help subreddit as well.

Our tv is about 6-7 years old. We primarily use a firestick for streaming (planning on getting a new TV soon) but when HBO max came out, it's not available on the firestick so we ordered an HDMI converter that will plug into my 2020 MacBook Air. When in full screen mode, at first it's fine. As soon as the cursor (and the menu/time bar with play/pause, etc.) disappears, the screen changes. I can't tell if it's a greenish tint or if it's just a bit darker. As soon as I move the cursor again, it's fine. When it's not in full screen, it's fine. Does anyone know why or how to fix it?

    Thanks in advance!

    SL3 ve 2020 Mbp

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 03:26 PM PDT

Incoming medical student , and eyeing the surface laptop 3 and the new base MacBook Pro. I can get a bae SL3 for 999 or the new pro base model for 1100. Leaning towards the Mac but never really been a Mac person so willing to try it. Main concern is battery life. The only pro I would give to the SL is new cpus and familiarity with windows.

What do you think is the best value here ?

3rd Party USB c Hubs vs offcial apple usb c dongles

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:10 PM PDT

    Hello,

I have recently ordered a new macbook pro 16 inch 2019 coming in the mail soon.

I am a music producer and videographer and i'm not sure which USB hub to order. Is it bad to use 3rd party USB hubs like, Vava, Hootoo etc...? Or is it healthier for my computer to just use the apple white usb to usb c dongles for each individual thing i want to plug in.

    Thanks!

Migration assistant taking forever to transfer

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 08:34 AM PDT

Don't know if this is the appropriate sub to post this but if it isn't please let me know.

So my new MacBook Pro just came in and I'm super excited. I upgraded from a MacBook (12-in, Retina display) that I got in late 2015. As I was setting up my new MacBook I decided to transfer my files via migration assistant. As if now it's been almost 12 hours and it's still showing the same screen on both macs. On my new MacBook the screen says it's "starting up" with a blue progress bar glowing and on my old MacBook it says it's looking for files and applications to transfer with the blue progress bar glowing. They are transferring data using WiFi and transferring about 130 GB worth of data. Is this normal? I've never used this feature before and I'm wondering if I should just cancel it and manually move files from my old MacBook to my new one.

Tl:dr; migration assistant is taking over 12 hours with no change. Is this normal?
