4 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 46)

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 02:24 AM PST

Welcome back to my weekly summary of the most interesting games I played last week. I've got some good ones for ya'll this week! :)

This week's games range from a music rhythm game that I've spent far too much time on this week, to a unique indie roguelike shooter with a distinct art-style and UI, a punishing action RPG where we have to time our attacks and block incoming attacks at JUST the right time to survive, and lastly, a shoot'em'Up space game perfect for those 5-minute casual play-sessions.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 46 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games:

Beat Fire [Game Size: 77 MB] (free)

Genre: Music / Rhythm / EDM - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Beat Fire is a music rhythm game where we wipe left and right to aim our gun (yes, you read that right, a gun) at tiles coming from the top of the screen to the rhythm of EDM tracks.

With only 3 lives, even on normal difficulty, the game is rather punishing, but the gameplay feels amazing, and I had a lot of fun with Beat Fire.

We unlock new tracks through spending in-game gold, which we earn quickly through gameplay, or by watching advertisements. I like this way of monetization as it makes Beat Fire one of the few rhythm games on mobile where we don't have to spend real-life money to unlock tracks.

ReversEstory [Game Size: 130 MB] (free)

Genre: Roguelike / Shooter / Indie - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

ReversEstory is a unique 2D roguelike shooter - and trust me - everything from the controls to the graphics and UI is unique in this game.

The premise is that we swipe to jump around each map while we pickup equipment pieces from chests and tap to fire arrows to deal with enemies. Upon finishing a map, we get to select one of two random attributes that will influence the next randomly generated map, and we keep going like this for as long as we can survive.

The boss battles in ReversEstory are challenging and fun, and while the game is very badly translated (from Japanese), the monetization is very relaxed, with 2 iAPs to support the developer, and a few ads here and there.

Truly one of the most unique games I've played on mobile, and one that I really enjoy.

Virus War [Total Game Size: 216 MB] (free)

    Genre: Shoot'em'Up / Arcade / Action - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Virus War is a space shooter that plays almost exactly like a bullet-hell game, except there are no bullets. Instead, we have to eliminate the enemy viruses flying towards us so they don't hit our spaceship.

Progression is based on an endless series of campaign levels, and in-between these, we can improve the strength and fire-rate of our normal weapon and level up a range of different special weapons to make us stronger.

Premium currency is earned through daily quests and login rewards and can be bought through iAP to progress faster in the game, which doesn't feel necessary. There are no forced ads, but the game does deploy a life energy system, which means we spend 5 energy to enter a match, and if we win, we earn the 5 energy back again. We have 80 energy in total, so I haven't yet experienced running out of energy.

Demon Blade [Total Game Size: 263 MB] (free)

Genre: RPG / Samurai-themed - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Demon Blade is a samurai-themed action RPG with a unique combat system where we have to swipe to attack and tap to defend at just the right time to avoid dying to the enemies we're fighting.

Combat is super challenging in this game, even right from the beginning, but if you like timing-based combat, you'll most likely enjoy Demon Blade.

Between levels, we equip new gear and level it up using resources earned through gameplay before we head back into one of the game's multiple game-modes.

Monetization happens through a gacha system, which is strictly used to unlock "demons", which are infused into our weapons, and through the game's energy system. I don't particularly like the monetization system, but the gameplay is good enough to still make it worthwhile to take the game for a spin.

App Store: Releases by the end of January, according to developer!

    Looking for a Hearthstone replacement

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 05:51 AM PST

Dropped Hearthstone a few months ago and looking for a replacement for my daily iPhone game fix. Looking for two types of game and would be very interested in this communities recommendations.

Daily Play - I really enjoyed Hearthstones incremental account progression through gameplay, and looking for something that fills that niche. Does not have to be a CCG. Some P2W fine (like hearthstone) but not to the point it's necessary (like clash of clans and all its clones). I've tried Gwent and it's not my cup of tea.

Turn Based Multiplayer - Looking for something to play with friends that doesn't require for us all to be on at the same time. Was super bummed Civ6 didn't have a non local multiplayer mode. Free is a plus but if it's good enough might be able to convince them to purchase.

    Thanks!

Need help finding sandbox iPad multiplayer games for kids

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 04:00 AM PST

I hope this is the correct subreddit to post this. If not, please let me know. Need suggestions for multiplayer on Lan for kid's games

My daughter and I enjoy the ios app series My Playhome. We love that it is a virtual dollhouse that we can take with us anywhere. It's a normal multiplayer game, just in a kids' dollhouse setting. It's also a sandbox game. Other developers we like include Miga, Toca Boca, and My Town, but none of them are multiplayer. Please, if anyone has any suggestions for multiplayer dollhouse games, please let me know!

We also used to love a multiplayer sandbox drawing game called Together. It is no longer supported, but was fun to play as a family. If anyone has any suggestions for other multiplayer games for families, I'd love to hear about them!

Thank you all for your time!

Which is the best gaming controller and why?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 03:18 AM PST

I bought some of 8bitdo's controllers because I love the size and design but after some use, I realized the analogs are way too sensitive, the triggers are just on/off bottons, and they have some drift at times. also the analogs don't have much resistance to them as console controllers.

I'm thinking of a DS4 or xB1s controller, unless there's a different one from Best Buy that y'all would recommend.

I'm looking for one comfortable for long hours, sweat reducing analogs (I've used my brothers DS4 unsure if all DS4's cause sweaty thumbs or x1s too), comforting grip, and the sturdiest one to carry around.

Also, I've tried nimbus controllers and I've had many bad experiences with those

We are making a retro, 8-bit inspired RPG for iOS. We are so happy with the way it's looking! We hope you like it too. Visit us at www.fatefullore.com for more information. We aim to release it on mid to late February.

    Snoopy's Street Fair (MISSING)

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 09:34 AM PST

Hello. I could use some help finding what happend to the mobile game Snoopy's Street Fair, and although this game is mobile there is a chance your 8yr old self played it. This is the game that I'm talking about.

    https://youtu.be/7W-jpkChnlY

What happened? The game was taken off the play store from the publisher Beeline Studios.

From what I know it is only playable in Japan, even third party app stores have trouble with this app. The furthest I've gotten to getting the game was a Japanese website to download apps in, and after using a VPN to fool my location in Japan it still didnt work.

All I'm asking for is advice on how to download these types of game.

I haven't experimented on an apple phone yet so I will update you on that. If you never played this game on a old gen iPad or Ipod, the game is fun and packed with seasonal content. But for me this game just throws back nostalgia.

My best chance is hooking up with a Beeline dev. I will update.

Is there any upcoming multiplayer mobile games that you think will be massively popular?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 09:18 AM PST

For clarification I mean games such as Rules of Survival, PUBG Mobile, and for a brief period Fortnite/CODM, where the game was massively popular at their respective peaks. It seems for now that Teamfight Tactics is the hottest thing on the market.

    Games similar to battle camp

Are there any games similar to battle camp. I played the game years ago but now it doesn't seem that active anymore. Any active replacements?

After Forge Ahead? A good blacksmith/shopkeep game?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 08:57 PM PST

We took the bait on Forge Ahead. It was deleted in about 5 mins but the crude steps to forge a weapon and particularly the customers requests really excited my kids. What's the best game in the App Store that will appease them?

Looking for a game similar to IMO: The World of Magic

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 09:24 PM PST

I have been on and off on IMO: The World of Magic. And It really gets me everytime i play it for a while. I really hate the grind for it though, I have roughly 20m gold worth of stuff on it and a level 28 hunter, 24 warrior and 24 mage but i cant hit level 30 without spending probably the next few months no lifing the game

the point is I am lookig for a game similar to it, I really like their grinding aspect and stuff but being on the same mid game level for the past couple of returns that I have made on it, it does make one feel like there is no progress being made. Plus their developer has not released any new classes or skills, which makes the game even more repetitive than it should for me.

On a side note I really liked Toram Online where they have updates and you can combine class skill trees but I am trying to get a 2d mmo game on my ios! If you have any suggestions for me to try out please let me know!

Looking for some free story-based 2D RPGs to play offline.

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 02:00 AM PST

Non-2D is fine, as long as the graphics aren't super high end (I'd like to play these on an older device). Turn based or action combat is preferred, but may make an exception if the game looks interesting enough. Would like games that have a decent length to them. Any input is appreciated!

Do any of the Final Fantasy games support the iPhone XS Max screen?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 07:37 AM PST

I don't wanna pay $20 for a game to find black bars on my screen. And piracy is dead, so I can't do a trial through that means.

If none support the XS Max, anyone know any good JRPGs that do?
