Will Reinstall MacOS erase all files and applications?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 02:14 PM PST

A buddy got a bug on his MacbookAir that defaults you to a random homepage. Nothing is listed under extensions, and all suspicious apps/files have been deleted.

Since you can not uninstall and reinstall Safari, I figure a reinstall of the OS to get a new Safari is best.

Will he need to back up everything before doing this? Or does reinstalling MacOS not erase any files/apps?

UPDATE: u/Jabbey15 suggestion of checking in Profiles and deleting anything unwanted worked!

Are they bugs in Catalina or... ?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 07:07 PM PST

Hi. I'm getting paranoid. I don't know if this is linked to Catalina update but I got these problems :

    • Sometimes when I turn off my MBA (2019), my screen shows a fast frame like if this has a graphic issue and shut down normally. What the hell ? Could this be caused by an app or Catalina ? Or because he heats a little?

    • When I log in my session after entering my password, a spinning white/light grey wheel appears (like if it was loading) for few seconds

    • My mac heats a little.

Is it normal or not ? My MBA is 7 days old

Issues getting time machine use drive attached to other Mac on network

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 08:12 PM PST

I was wondering if anyone could explain what it was that I am doing wrong or what is going on to cause the following to happen.

I have a late 2014 Mac mini running MacOS version 10.15.2 with an external hard drive attached, the Mac mini has this drive set as it's time machine backup location. I have followed Apples instructions as to how to share a time machine drive across the network in terms of settings.

When I go to set that drive as the time machine location on my 2017 MBP (also running 10.15.2) it gives a warning saying I do not have the necessary read/write privileges. However it still maps the drive to the computer and I can go to finder and look thought the file structure that is on the drive.

Is there anything that I could be doing that would prevent time machine from using the network attached drive as a backup drive?

    Thanks in advance!

Catalina not showing up as an option for Mac Book Pro

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 10:21 PM PST

I have a mid 2015 MacBook Pro and it's telling me that I'm up to date with Mojave 10.14.6, Catalina is not an option... If I search Catalina in the App Store it says it's compatible with my laptop, but if I try and download it says its not available... Any insight out there that may help me out?

frustrated, my 2019 iMac is slooooooow. slower than my work 2013 iMac

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 06:27 PM PST

    home iMac (2019)
    3.6ghz Quad-Core Intel core i3, 8gb RAM

    work iMac (2013)
    2.8ghz intel Core i5, 8gb Ram

I just got a 21 inch iMac for home use around September.
But since then it's sloooow. When I turn it on and load any program, it takes a while to load
Switching keyboards between languages takes a while, and writing in non-English is laggy!! I type something and it'd appear 3-5 seconds later
after using it for hours, the computer seems to speed up, but I am sick and tired of seeing the spinning rainbow disk

I deleted a ton of files and even re-formatted the drive and re-installed Mac OS, and its still happening!

I used disk utility to see if its a hard drive problem but it seems fine.

I have no idea why my 2019 iMac is so much slower than my 6 year old work iMac.

    Slow boot

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 06:05 PM PST

My dad has a 2012 15 inch mbp that has had a slow boot for about 2 years. It's a very quick machine seeming as fast as my ryzen 5 laptop from 2019. It's a core i7 8 GB ram 750 GB hdd non retina model and I think the hdd is holding back the start up. Applications open relatively quick. About 5 seconds or less unless you try to open multiple at the same time. The machine in total has 80gbs of storage used so it's not like the drive is full. Also his user account does lag more when using anything that accesses the disk. Any help in improve the 2-5 minute boot time would be great thanks. Tldr 2012 mbp with spinning disk slow to boot. Help appreciated

Can I set up my old macbook as surveillance of my room? To catch roommates while I'm away?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2019 12:52 AM PST

I'm going to be away for two days, could I set up my macbook somehow to where I could have it constantly recording or perhaps motion detected? I'm afraid my roommates might take advantage of me being away and I don't have enough time to change the lock on the door. I know I can leave it plugged in an on, is there anychance I could view it live via my iphone? Thanks!

    Catalina power loss during sleep/hibernate

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:08 AM PST

My 12" MacBook loses a lot of battery charge overnight: if it was fully charged at 10pm, the next morning it would be a < 30%. The battery is about a year old and still ok. Power saving settings are at default, and I'm not aware of any apps running that would prevent it from sleep.

This power loss issue has started with Catalina.

Is anyone else experiencing the same? Has anyone found a solution?

Is this a bug with the login password ?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 08:46 AM PST

I have a password with numbers, when I turn on my Mac the password is incorrect but not when I unlock my user account because I locked it. Why ? My keyboard is AZERTY and numerical keyboard (1234567890) is activated.

For example, let's say my password is 1234.

    1. I created my password as "1234"
    2. I turn on my Mac and type 1234 but the password is wrong. I need to use shift + numbers to unlock it. (1+shift, 2+shift, 3+shift, etc)
    3. If I lock my user account, I can type 1234 with the numbers keys to unlock it. I don't need to do 1+shift, 2+shift, etc.

    Help me, please :(

    Safari 13: Tampermonkey vs Cascadea

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 12:04 PM PST

Just recently updated to Safari 13, hence all my extensions are gone. I'm looking for an app to be able to use userscripts mainly for theming specific sites. So far I've managed to find Tampermonkey and Cascadea on the App Store, which I assume are compatible with the scripts found on Greasy Fork.

Both are paid, so any suggestions would be welcomed.

Early 2015 MBP hard drive upgrade experience

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 09:03 AM PST

Bought a kit from OWC to update my hard drive from 250GB to 1TB. I thought it would be straightforward, but it ended up being a giant pain in the ass. Documenting here in case it helps anyone.

The new drive came with an enclosure, but it only works with the stock apple drive - not the drive it comes with! Originally my plan was to just clone my old drive to the new drive, as I have done in the past. It appeared this would not be a viable approach.

First attempt: I install the new drive, and put my old (stock Apple) drive in the enclosure. Maybe I can boot from the old drive? I held down Option at boot, but it didn't find any bootable disk. It shows me Internet Recovery.

Second attempt: Maybe I'll give Internet Recovery a shot. Once it loads I should be able to use Disk Utility to clone my old drive. I enter my home wifi password and wait. And wait. And wait... Until it errors out with "-2002F". I google this and it basically means it can't connect to Apple's servers.

Third attempt: Someone suggested this error could be a DNS issue. I try configuring my router to use google's DNS (8.8.8.8) and try internet recovery again. Same -2002F error.

Fourth attempt: Try internet recovery on a different connection. I fire up my phone's hotspot and connect to that. Same error.

Fifth attempt: Ok, maybe I can use a bootable Catalina installer. Since I already updated to Catalina on my old drive, I cannot download the installer from the App Store any more. I start trolling around for the installer. I finally find one and create a bootable partition on one of my external drives. I reboot (after swapping the drive) and hold Option. The installer shows up as an option! I select it, it starts loading, goes about 75%, then....the dreaded stop/cancel sign! Dead in the water yet again.

Sixth attempt: Maybe I have a faulty installer. I find the file from a another source and create the bootable installer again. Exactly the same results.

Seventh attempt: I pull out my backup USB external drive, which is an exact clone of my main drive. Maybe I can boot from this? I hold Option and it comes up as a bootable disk. Hot damn. I boot up, which takes ages since it's all from USB. I'm able to open Carbon Copy Cloner after about 10 minutes. I start cloning my backup to the new drive! Hot damn. It transfers about 100MB then the laptop just turns off. Fuuuuuuuu......

Eighth attempt: I try plugging in the external drive in the other USB port. It boots, again taking fucking forever. I turned off the screen saver and wifi so nothing will interrupt the xfer. I start cloning to the new drive and let it run overnight. It finally fucking works! I think the first USB port I used is starting to get flakey/dirty, and maybe it got bumped the first time.

I'm just glad I waited to do this while on vacation. The only thing I would say is religiously backup your disk, b/c it's the only thing that saved my ass.

Any one else notice a 1 pixel wide line offset between windows and menu bar?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 03:18 AM PST

Any one else notice a 1 pixel wide line offset between windows and menu bar?

So ever since I updated to mojave ( about a year ago) I noticed my windows never truly go fullscreen. There's always that one pixel wide line between the menu bar and the window. I remember it being on all sides of the window but on catalina I only see it on top. Basically I always see one line of wallpaper (in the video, the stars between the menu bar and the window can still be seen).

    https://reddit.com/link/ehkvwp/video/9p0q2toa9r741/player

    https://preview.redd.it/kwqz1jxc9r741.png?width=782&format=png&auto=webp&s=583ad4630b1e417a941ae1c62265dc4313deb3d4

Looking closer, using a different wallpaper, I actually noticed that that line of the wallpaper is actually slightly darker than the rest, so it must be done on purpose. The thing is, as opposed to the menu bar which kind of lets the colours of the wallpaper pass through in a very blurry way, that one line is very detailed and I can see the stars on my usual wallpaper.

    https://preview.redd.it/c30qd9g07r741.png?width=1626&format=png&auto=webp&s=405642390fadb6784439734ceb1d5d5674fd71ba

Using light mode I find the contrast makes it way worse and impossible (for me) to actually use.

    https://preview.redd.it/zxn91kpq7r741.png?width=1702&format=png&auto=webp&s=b48f8f7e0febcdb2e27f9c1383b23abdce3ff4fd

I understand that this is a problem probably only for me and I might be making a big deal out of nothing. I just find it mildly infuriating that this is a thing.

What do you guys think? Or do you guys prefer having that separation between window and menu bar?

P.S. : Yes, I could change wallpaper, but that's not a solution nor really the point of the post
