[Rant] I miss being able to unlock my phone while it's held horizontally, while I'm wearing a scarf, when I'm looking away for a split second or have my head turned or looking at it from an angle, or without having to distance my phone further from my face if it's too close

    Posted: 30 Dec 2019 08:18 AM PST

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like that the fingerprint scanner was just so much more convenient when it came to unlocking your phone?

After using FaceID for about 6 months I have to say that I keep running into more and more reasons to hate it.

Of course by now I've conditioned myself to lower my scarf/jacket to unlock my phone, or make sure my phone has my 100% full attention in order to unlock it - But the thing that sucks most is because I'm nearsighted, if I don't have my contacts on, I usually have my phone closer to my face - Apparently close enough that I have to distance my phone further away to the point where I can't even see if the phone unlocked or not.

Of course there's always the option to just use the PIN code - But it sucks since the only issue I ran into with the Touch ID was needing dry hands or having to take off gloves (which you still need to do anyway..)

    [End Rant]

Just found out that a Linux machine connected to a USB printer can be used as an AirPrint server.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 07:48 PM PST

This may not be news for some people. But if you have a Linux machine connected to a USB printer, and go to

    Administration - Printers - Server - Settings

    and check off this option

"Publish shared printers connected to this system"

Then any iOS device on the same Wifi network will see the printers attached to this machine via USB available in AirPrint.

I was just able to print from my iPad to an HP LaserJet 1020 that is almost 15 years old and neither Wifi nor AirPrint capable.

How does the A12x compare to other non-Apple processors?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 08:26 PM PST

Hello! I currently work in a retail store that sells both Apple and Microsoft computers and tablets. I'm not very well versed in all things Apple despite having various Apple devices myself.

I've been looking at the current iPad Pro models and trying to get a grasp on how they compare to other tablets, and even laptops. My understanding is that they're more powerful than the iPad/iPad Air. Are the iPad Pros comparable to the most recent MacBook models, with the Intel processors? What Intel processor is most comparable to the A12x?

I hope this isn't a dumb question, and please let me know if this isn't the right community for this type of question!! I'd simply like to know more so that I'm able to sell the products better.

Apple NEEDS to display games better in the AppStore.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 09:11 PM PST

I've been an Apple user for a long time, primarily use my phone for messaging and games (got Apple Arcade, even)

I like the AppStore, I always found it to be a less shitty version of the absolute clusterfuck that is the android play store.

However, that doesn't mean that Apple's is good when it comes to how it displays games and what it recommends exactly. If I want to find good games, I am forced to wait until a gem shows up in the "new games we love" section.

Everything else? It sucks. Wanna check the top paid or top free games? It's either Minecraft or the same games as always for paid and absolute trash that you see in those annoying YouTube ads at the top.

You want to check by category perhaps? They still recommend/show games that aren't only old, but have been dropped and no longer updated by their developers. This hasn't changed at all, the same games have been there for as long as I can remember.

It gets even more hilarious when you check the "today" tab. More often than not, the "game of the day" is (again) some game that's old as hell and the last update it got was two years ago.

All I'm saying is that it would be much better if they'd step it up. Find a way to display better quality games for their specific categories, a way to make it easier to find new games that you may enjoy, aside from waiting for the "new games we love" tab to update. It really sucks that finding new, well made games is such a chore.

Is there any possible solution to use a 2019 27 inch iMac as some sort of external display for my work laptop (Surface Pro)?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:28 PM PST

I'm aware I can't seem to use miracast, but perhaps there is some other way to use the iMac as a second display? Maybe there is some creative solution I could use, I can install anything on the iMac in Mac OS or windows 10 (bootcamp). Any help appreciated!!
