    Does my disc need to be fully replaced? Can't even get the recovery disc running (iMac 2013)

    Hi All ... Need some help!

    I resurrected my old 2012 MBP with a RAM and SSD upgrade. I always loved this machine and the upgrades dramatically improved speed. It's truly hard to believe this machine is 10 years old. Still the best keyboard ever! Here is my problem ...

    I used Super Duper to clone the old hard drive to my new Samsung SSD. My current OS is Mojave. I downloaded Catalina and went to install but the installer does not recognize the HD. When I go to select it I'm given a message that the disk does not use the GUID partition scheme. I've done some research and understand the steps I need to take to correct the issue. However when I run Disc Utility I am not able to erase the drive. The only option to choose is to run first aid (which doesn't change anything), The picture included is what I see when I select the volume.

    I tried running in recovery mode and the disc utility version appears to be a very old one that will allow me to erase. However I do not see the option to format the disc with the necessary format.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?? How do I get this bad boy bumped up to Catalina??

    Q: how to force "Optimised battery charging" mode?

    Hey folks! I got my new shiny MBP M1 and want to make sure that it serves me as long as possible. I know that doing all sorts of smarts to preserve battery life is usually not worth it. However, reducing the number of charging cycles is one of the few proven ones.

    macOS already has a feature to put the battery charging on hold:

    What sucks is that there is no way to enforce this mode in macOS. Most of the time when I dock my Mac I know that I will keep it connected for a long period of time, but macOS "smartness" is not smart enough to infer it.

    Do you know of any tools for macOS that would let me force it into the "Optimised battery charging" state? I don't mean the battery charge limiters, I want to put it into this specific state. This way I will be sure that Mac is drawing power from the wall, not battery.

    Drag the save dialog?

    Probably a dumb question, but how do you move or drag the save dialogue? Here is an example of filing a receipt, but it's in most other apps, too. The save dialogue is stuck there. I need to see the details of the receipt to name the file.

    Deleting files on an external hard drive and emptying the trash doesn't free up any space.

    It's driving me nuts and making me run out of space in all my external hard drives. I am using a MacBook Pro 2021 M1 Pro and Monterey 12.2.1.

    I have several external 4TB hard drives formatted in APFS, and lately I've been starting to notice that when I delete some files and empty the trash, the trash appears empty but it doesn't free up any space in the drives.

    Must be noticed that if the drive is 4TB, and it tells me that it has 200GB free, it should have 3,8TB of files, but if I select all the files in the drive and check their size they are only 3,2TB, so there are 600GB ghost GB taking space.

    If it helps, I have never used Time Machine. I tried restarting the system multiple times, eject the drives and plug them again, etc.

    Once, I even moved all the files to another drive, formatted the problematic drive and moved all the files back to that drive, and then it was showing the correct used space of 3,2TB (instead of 3,8TB), but this is a completely unusable solution.

    The drives I have noticed it are Seagate Expansion 4TB and Seagate Expansion Portable 5TB. I've been using this same kind of drives for many years and only recently I've started noticing those problems on both my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Wifi disconnects on Macbook Air 2017 whenever it is under strain (gaming, lots of tabs, etc)

    For as long as I can remember, this has been an issue for me. Whenever my Macbook Air is under any sort of processor load, it drops the wifi connection. If I open a game, it'll drop wifi connection after varying amounts of time. Sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes 30 seconds. I'm especially stumped on what to do because I know this is an issue with the laptop and not my router. I have bootcamp on my macbook, and I can do whatever I want there without the connection dropping, but the issue is that I'd rather use MacOS because performance is dramatically worse on bootcamp. I've searched high and low for a solution to this, but it seems no one has had a similar problem. I've even tried factory resetting my mac; no dice. It's like, whereas my other devices simply slow down/freeze a little bit and get back up to speed, my macbook drops the connection to try and get back up to speed. It doesn't even necessarily have to stutter for the connection to drop. Sometimes I'll just be playing something with no apparent drops in performance, wifi will just drop with no prior warning.

    Does anyone else know how to fix this? I'm running Mojave (previously Big Sur, downgraded in an effort to fix the problem, did not help)

    Preview app excessive energy use

    Running on monterey m1 macbook air and the preview app uses A LOT of my battery capacity.
    It's really surprising to me since I've never really had an issue with battery usage of preview, but now it's really bumming me out.

    Anybody else notice this?

    I'm on a base model 2015 MBP (8 & 128) and I'm curious as to what the consensus is (if any) of professionals who manage 'fleets' of MacBooks.

    I'm still on Catalina, and have been pretty happy with it, but wasn't sure if there's any particular reason to upgrade re:performance and battery life.

    is there a way to delete all imessage fast?

    my dad just gave me his old macbook and connected all the usual things to my icloud account. but on messages, while i can still send and recieve messages from my account, it still shows old converstations from my dad. i know that i could manually go through each conversation and delete them, but he has like hundreds of old conversations and it would take forever. is there any way id be able to delete all the messages? thanks in advance!

    How can I prevent macOS from downloading Monterey install app automatically?

    I already unticked "download new updates when available" in system preferences but somehow the install app ends up being downloaded onto my mac every time I delete it. How can I prevent this from happening?

    First time Apple buyer - bought the M1 max, but we can't hear any audio when we connect to it remotely. Any suggestions?

    We bought the M1 max for Editing video, it's excellent. First time I buy Apple, pretty impressive. When we use our windows PCs to remotely connect to the Apple, no sound comes out. We never had this issue when we connect windows PC to windoes PC. We have a TeamViewer subscription, and tried Parsec, VNC and a few others. No luck. Video works fine but the Mac won't output any audio. Any solutions would help us tremendously.

    Help - External Monitor windowboxing

    Hope someone can shed some light for me.

    I have a 2020 MBP running 12.2.1(21D62), just picked up a Samsung S32A700NWU 32" 3840 x 2160 4K monitor.

    I am running it through a USB-C to disport cable, no dongles or adaptors.

    Resolutions are fine, however I have a small issue with window boxing. Got myself a little black area all the way around the screen.

    I do not have the option to underscan like on a TV, I've tried the monitor in TV mode, tried HDMI input as well, I have no option to stretch or resize within the monitor options.

    What is even stranger is I connected a 2015 macbook and the monitor was fullscreen no issue at all, no windowboxing at all.

    Another oddity is that when the machine begins to boot it displays full screen then blinks and then drops to being slightly undersized. It has to be a controller issue somewhere right?!

    Worth mentioning that I've done SMC and PRAM reset, well I attempted to anyway, I may have failed at that.

    Any ideas on an EDID or some other blackmagic

    Does macOS (Catalina in my case) do file integrity checks when copying?

    When I'm on a Windows machine, I insist on using Teracopy to facilitate file copying. I don't know that there's ever been an equivalent for Mac, and I have looked, but maybe I shouldn't worry too much about it? It would be nice to find that this was just built into the OS, but I've never been able to confirm that was the case either.

    Any insight on this topic would be great and I would appreciate it a lot.

    Migration Assistant and creating separate admin and user accounts

    I've got the new MacBook Pro arriving in a few days. As long as I've been a Mac user, I've always used a single admin account, but I know that for security purposes it's generally better to have a separate admin account and user account, so I'd like to do that on my new MBP. I was wondering if it's difficult to do this if I use Migration Assistant to transfer all my files, settings, etc. over from my current MBP. Or is it better just to set up the new computer and then manually transfer everything over after setting up the separate accounts. Any advice would be appreciated!

    The native dock is pretty basic and does'nt tell if I've opened up multiple windows of the same app.

    Anyone having issues with Mac photos not updating?

    Last time it updated was on Wi-Fi so I'm not sure if that's the problem. I've been using it on hotspot from my phone but it's not updating. I have all my settings on to not limit data. I haven't been able to get on Wi-Fi because I work on the water, running Monterey 12.2.1
