Posted: 28 Dec 2019 03:47 PM PST Edit/error: The title of the post should say "laptop replacement" instead of "desktop replacement". Introduction: For the last 10 years or so, I've only purchased Samsung smartphones, watches, and tablets. I had the note 10+, the galaxy watch active 2, and a samsung galaxy note pro 12.2" tablet. Around black Friday, the base iPad was going for a mere $229 AND I got 5% cash back using a credit card. It was a deal that was hard to pass up, and I've always heard good things about apple products so I decided to give it a shot. I also got a good black friday deal for the apple pencil and the smart keyboard. I didn't expect much, I was planning to let my 1-year-old son play around with it, draw on, and watch movies on it through my Plex server. I didn't expect iPadOS to really impress me the way it did, it felt very fluid and the multitasking just felt nice. Yes, samsung tablets and phones have multitasking, but it just doesn't feel as fluid, its hard to explain. Applications: I then did some more research on reddit and found out about Jump Desktop, which allowed me to effectively transform my iPad into a windows PC. This proved to be an amazing solution for when I need more power or access to programs that could only run on windows. The apple pencil support on Jump desktop is also amazing, and I basically replaced the mouse with an apple pencil (though you can use the citrix x1 bluetooth mouse for full mouse support). I previously used Teamviewer or VNC on my android devices, but it just didnt feel fluid enough for me to use those devices as a laptop replacement (I also tried Jump desktop on my android devices but found out that its not supported on samsung dex and its overall not as fluid and great as the iOS version). Although jump desktop worked when I was at home, I could not remotely connect to my desktop PC when I was outside my network. I spent about a day, kind of frustrated with Jump desktop because I couldnt figure out how to remotely connect to my desktop PC using the "fluid protocol" from outside my home. I set up my windows PC to allow remote desktop connections, I made sure the appropriate ports were opened, and I allowed jump desktop to bypass my firewall, with no luck. I later found out the main issue (after many hours of searching and troubleshooting): that if you turn off your computer's monitor, jump desktop refuses to connect to your PC from outside your network. In addition, I could not set my computer's resolution to match the iPad's resolution and so even when I could get Jump to work (by leaving the computer monitor on), the desktop screen would not "fill" the whole screen (black bars were present). A bit more research led me to the following solution: I bought a "headless HDMI adapter" which, when plugged into my PC's HDMI port, in a way "tricks" my computer into thinking a monitor is plugged in and is on. In addition, I was able to access my GeForce display settings and set the custom resolution to the iPad's native resolution (that was previously not supported by my monitor) so that my ENTIRE iPad's screen was filled with my windows PC. As long as my WiFi connection is decent, I honestly feel like I'm at home on my windows PC whenever I use Jump desktop on my iPad. The audio is practically perfectly synced to whats happening on my PC. I could even fire up youtube videos through my remote desktop and watch in fullscreen without realizing that I wasn't on a native iPad app. The resolution even looks improved (since I can play 4k videos through a windows PC but cant do it on apple products) and I can zoom into the video (which can't be done on the native youtube iPad app). Here is a link to the HDMI headless adapter on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JKFTYA8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I then found out about the Notability app. I am a grad student working on my Ph.D. who works with lasers, optics, and specializes in spectroscopy. Its an amazing solution for taking notes, much better than any android solution i've tried. I use it almost daily in a laboratory setting to take detailed (handwritten and typed) notes that includes pictures i've taken with my camera or found on the web, diagrams, back-of-the-envelope calculations, checklists, a lot of curse words, and data. I also use Jump desktop to remotely control my laboratory computer and it helps me run experiments (after I've done the inital setup/alignment) even when I am outside the room. (If anyone else here does advanced spectroscopy or is interested in the physics of light, I also highly recommend the APE calculator application). The Safari stock application functions like a full desktop/laptop browser. I find that using the safari browser works better in some instances than using the actual applications from the app store. For example, I use Safari for amazon shopping, to monitor my amazon cloud cams, to multitask with facebook, to send download requests and monitor my home plex server, and with reddit (Although for reddit Ive recently been playing around with apollo). To put the nail in the coffin, I came across the "moonlight" app, which allows my desktop computer (i7-8700k, gtx 1080ti) to stream my games to my iPad, which I can then play using my ps4 controller (connected to my iPad via bluetooth). Basically, its like I have my own "google stadia". I don't play multiplayer games on my iPad this way (although honestly I probably could), since when I game competitively I always want to minimize latency and input lag, but I play single player games (e.g. outer worlds, divinity 2) and the experience, although not perfect, is very clean and definitely good enough for single player games (provided your WiFi connection can comfortably support ~20Mbps, and your upload speed on your home internet connection is also good enough) Additional Accessories I highly recommend the apple pencil and the apple smart keyboard folio. The PS4 controller for gaming, as mentioned previously. The Citrix X1 mouse for Jump desktop which gives you full mouse support. Also check out the "Hyperdrive" usb-C hub, I've been using it with great results for connections to a USB drive, external monitors, wired headphones, and SD cards. You can buy cheap genuine apple 18W or 30W chargers, open box on eBay, for much cheaper than you would get them from apple. The "paperlike" screen protector is also interesting, although I personally didn't like the texture. I don't like to have any screen protectors on my device. Discussion/Conclusion: So after such an amazing experience, and realizing that I've effectively replaced my laptop, I returned my hot and heavy, battery-hungry $1400 gaming laptop without any regrets. Since I was loving the base 10.2" iPad so much, I returned my iPad and upgraded to the 10.5" iPad air. The screen was better, it felt nicer to write on, and it felt a little nicer in the hand. But then I was feeling that the screen was a little small, and I wanted access to the USB-C port, face-unlock, the smaller bezels, and higher refresh rates, so I returned the iPad air and bought an iPad pro 11". The screen still felt a little small (since the iPad is literally a laptop for me now) and so I made the final upgrade to the 12.9" variant of the ipad pro (3rd gen). I bought the 64GB model used but like-new (second-hand over facebook marketplace) with cellular capability, and with apple care still on the device for another 1.5 years, for $800. I also bought the smart keyboard (which normally retails for about $200) for $100, also second-hand but it was brand new and still sealed in the box. Finally, I got the 2nd gen apple pencil for <90$ (used but also like new) from Amazon. Then I realized that I could text and call/facetime on my tablet (Oh lord) and connect to my phone's hotspot without having to take my phone out and manually turn it on, provided I had an apple phone... So I sold my note 10+, returned my galaxy watch active 2, and went full Apple. Bought the new iPhone 11 and the new apple watch. Both these devices, although lacking many features that my samsung devices had, have a certain "fluidity" that is hard to explain. I wouldn't say the apple watch and phone are much better than the competition from samsung, there are pros and cons on both sides of the aisle, but the iPad is definitely miles ahead of any android tablet I've tried, and it gets even better with support from the iPhone. I am also very impressed by apples face-unlock, iMessage and facetime. The messaging and FaceTime features far surpasses the samsung in usability, stability, reliability, and quality. I hope this post helps other people out there who are thinking about replacing their laptop with the lightweight (~1-2 lbs) and ultraportable iPad. I've heard many people say that the iPad is NOT a laptop replacement, but with the right setup it DEFINITELY can be, without any compromises (provided you have a PC already at home, which you can remote-desktop into). Overall its an amazing and beautiful device. [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Dec 2019 06:40 AM PST May sound like a weird question I suppose but I just recently purchased the iPad Pro 12.9. (hopefully the 4th gen isn't going to blow this one out of the water when it comes out this year) I will be attending speaking conferences, training seminars and hauling this thing around and was wondering for taking notes and general usage what have been peoples experiences? My concern is that it's not discrete by any stretch and people would view that as "why did you bring that, or that's too big" - yes I have a bit of social anxiety when it comes to stuff like this. Maybe someone's been in my situation before and can help me out... [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:14 AM PST So I recently was able to get a digital adapter so I can plug my guitar and use amplifiers on GarageBand. I love using the drums and keys on loops, but I was wondering if it was possible to play through the amp while outside of it's screen. Is there any way to have it running in the background while I mess with the other instruments? Or even have it split screened? Thanks for any tips or advice you may have. [link] [comments]
Does anyone carry around an iPad Pro over a MacBook? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:54 AM PST Recently I have been thinking about getting an or waiting for the new iPad Pro to replace my early 2016 MacBook since I really only use it for schoolwork and notes. I'm just not sure though since I tend to use google docs for notes and other online assignments. Does anyone just carry an iPad instead of a MacBook and uses it for mostly the same things as myself? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:30 PM PST Hey guys, I just purchased a iPad on OfferUp that it says "This iPad has been stolen" it was cheap but he never told me it was stolen. I don't want to lose any money and I already called the phone number many times. If it was just locked, I would've unlocked it myself. But idk if I can do it this way. Can I still unlock it or what should I do to hopefully keep the iPad or get my money back?? [link] [comments]
Is there going to be a new iPad Pro releasing in 2020? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 12:48 PM PST I am a college student, and I really want an iPad Pro for school. A friend of mine said a new one might be comming out in March? I don't know if I should wait until then or just buy one now. [link] [comments]
Kids case that’s compatible with Osmo Posted: 29 Dec 2019 12:00 PM PST We got my daughter the Osmo kit for Christmas. She currently has one of those very thick kids cases with a handle, but we have to take it off every time she uses Osmo. It's very difficult to remove and put back on and I'm afraid we're going to crack the screen doing it. The Osmo case doesn't have good reviews, are there any other cases that would work with Osmo? She has the iPad Air. [link] [comments]
Looking for advice regarding the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil Posted: 29 Dec 2019 02:10 AM PST Hello! I recently bought an 11" iPad Pro when it was on sale over Black Friday as my 6 year old MacBook Air is on its last legs. I am a student and I primarily use my new device for web browsing and writing essays (I have the folio keyboard as well). Nothing too intensive. I recently saw the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil on sale for $99 on Amazon and I'm wondering if I would like to move my note taking onto my iPad. I've heard great things about the promotion display with the pencil. For a hundred bucks though, it just seems kind of steep for something I could replicate with a $15 actual physical notebook and pen. Any advice is appreciated! TL;DR Want to know whether note taking on iPad Pro is worth the $100 Apple Pencil investment [link] [comments]
Can you use an Apple keyboard to play games? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:03 AM PST So, I'm a gamer, and sometimes, my PC is being used, so I go on my iPad, I am not sure if the Apple keyboard connects with games like Roblox, Call of Duty mobile etc. so does anyone know how to connect it to games if possible? Thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:11 AM PST Hey guys, Do you know a Adapter+App where I can plug my camera hdmi in and use my Ipad Pro as an external Monitor without any lag. I know that there are Devices that send this signal via Wlan but they have a small delay. I searched a lot in other Forums but I can't find any good solution for my problem so I hope that you can help me. [link] [comments]
Parental restrictions across platforms Posted: 28 Dec 2019 08:37 PM PST This is probably not the right sub for this, but I was wondering if anyone knows of an app that controls screen time across platforms like iPad, Switch, and Xbox One. [link] [comments]
How necessary is the addition of a keyboard for the iPad Pro for university students? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:05 AM PST For a student, the iPad Pro is expensive. But when you consider the benefits that it provides, it becomes a much simpler choice for those that can make the most out of it. On the other hand, maybe a keyboard is not a necessary addition, given its steep price tag. I'll be using the iPad Pro for university specifically, i.e taking notes, watching lectures, light media consumption etc. Could I get by without using the keyboard entirely. Are there any experiences of people who have tried this and succeeded. I'll be using a 2nd generation apple pencil as a supplement for note taking. Thank you! [link] [comments]
4 year old son lost his 60%+ LEGO Star Wars TCS saved game. Any way to recover it? Posted: 28 Dec 2019 08:46 PM PST Somehow my 4 year old son's at least 60% progress saved game disappeared from my iPad this morning. Hours of play time. I suspect he clicked 'new' rather than 'load' (seeing as he can't read) and then selected his save file and accepted a warning box. As you can imagine, he's pretty sad - and I sure would like to be super dad and save the day by recovering his old save game. Anyone know a secret trick? iPad has iCloud backups, but I don't think it's possible to access old versions.... [link] [comments]
Apple Pencil gen 1 on iPad pro 11? Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:47 AM PST Okay this may sound incredibly stupid but did anyone try pairing the first gen apple pencil to an iPad pro 11 using a lightning to USB C converter dongle thing? Will it even work? If someone has such a dongle lying around can anyone try? I am very curious. [link] [comments] |
