After upgrade to Catalina, Messages app on Macbook Pro crashes and will not open Posted: 25 Nov 2019 08:55 PM PST Hello! As the title states, I upgraded my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports) to Catalina 10.15.1 and immediately after the upgrade, the Messages app no longer opens and will immediately crash. I have run the computer in safe mode and the behavior is the same. All other apps appear to be working correctly. Does anyone know what could be causing this or have a solution? Thank you! iMac 2010 screen blacks out followed by WiFi failure Posted: 25 Nov 2019 10:26 AM PST This happens every 20 minutes or so. The screen will dim over the course of a couple seconds until it's blacked out, then it will come back on after another second and the WiFi will be disconnected from the network. Most of the time I need to restart the computer fully before the WiFi can be reconnected. The has been happening as I'm trying to sync a large Dropbox account to the computer, and it has been getting very hot. I was originally thinking of buying a USB WiFi adapter to fix the issue but when I saw that the screen was blinking off when it happens I became afraid the issue was much deeper. I upgraded from El Capitan to Sierra last night and that didn't fix anything. Should I even bother trying to get a USB WiFi adapter for this thing? It seems like it could be a power supply issue or something. This computer also had left black residue on all of the USB connectors attached to it when I unplugged everything to move it recently. Looking for a second opinion on whether I should just take it somewhere to be recycled or try to work through these problems. [link] [comments] |

Invalid address when I try to purchase apps from app store using debit card in Apple pay Posted: 25 Nov 2019 09:12 PM PST |
Posted: 25 Nov 2019 08:06 PM PST I wrote a long email. I never saved it as a draft or sent it. My computer froze and I accidentally clicked on the X button too many times which removed the message. Is there a way to recover a message that was never saved or technically deleted in the trash? [link] [comments] |
Apple telling me they have permanently disabled my account because of bad gift card Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:58 PM PST I bought a couple of discounted iTunes gift cards on www.gameflip.com and redeemed them right away. A week later I am seeing this error on the app store when I try to make a purchase: "Your account has been disabled in the App Store and iTunes". Talked to Apple, and apparently one of the gift cards (or at least one so far) has been flagged as stolen or 'malicious'. They are saying that they have 'permanently disabled' my account because of this, and that the only way to re-enable it is to have the person who originally reported the gift card as stolen withdraw their report. I think the chance of that happening is roughly about the same as a snowball in hell's. The problem is that they are saying that this is the ONLY way to fix the account status, even though it's totally out of my control. If my account remains disabled, I lose ALL of my purchases AND the itunes gift card account balance. I don't even know how that would be legal, but if that happens it is a major loss of time and money for me. I am reaching out to Gameflip about this, but I can't believe that they are saying there is nothing I can do on my end to resolve it. I also am not even sure if this is true, since the particular Apple support person I had was rude and downright hostile about this situation. I am not a criminal, I am just caught in the middle. Lesson learned about buying gift cards online. Has anyone had a situation like this? [link] [comments] |
Trying to install larger drive into Macbook(Model A1181), not sure how to access EFI Posted: 25 Nov 2019 07:48 PM PST I know this may be near useless, as it's a very old Macbook, but I'm a PC person, and due to my girlfriend preferring Mac, I'm learning more about them to help her if she ever has issues. I have this second hand A1181(2006) that I'm trying to access the EFI on, since the original 80GB drive sounded like death(and had a user profile I don't have the password for on it), and I have a spare 1TB drive I installed. Now, of course, I need to reinstall an OS. Everything I've seen says hold command, option, O(letter, not number?) and F after pressing the power button, but nothing is actually happening, besides a folder icon with a question mark inside it. I do have a USB boot drive plugged in, though it does have Linux Manjaro on it(maybe that's my issue?), since I just want to get the computer working. I do have a spare, empty USB drive that I can use to load MacOS onto it, though I don't know where to start, or even what version of OS(or where to get it) to use for this 2006 Macbook. I'd much rather get MacOS on there, so help in figuring out what version I should use would be a huge help. (I also do know full well that it's essentially useless to try learning a Mac's OS by installing Manjaro, but it's the only boot disk I have right now.) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Nov 2019 06:48 PM PST About a month ago my 2019 MacBook Pro was stuck on a blank screen. It's like the laptop was still working, but the screen stopped working. There would be a sound when I plugged the charger in, I could hear the fans working, I could even charge my phone. But the screen stayed black. Eventually I found a fix online. I reset something by holding keys down after pressing the power button and it started working again. Anyways, this exact same thing has happened (black screen), but I've forgotten what I reset to make it work again. Can anyone suggest what I could try? It wasn't the SMC or PRAM/NVRAM. It was another one which I found only after hours of searching. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Can't add my card or PayPal to my Apple ID Posted: 25 Nov 2019 12:15 PM PST I tried adding my card to my Apple ID but it wouldn't add it, and kept declining, I thought it was my card so I destroyed it and ordered a new one, when it came in and I activated it, it still wouldn't be added, so I tried my PayPal, but it didn't work also, and I received an email from PayPal saying "Transaction for $1.99 failed to go through." I figure I bought something and before it could go through and my bank could approve it, I destroyed the card and it won't take the $1.99 payment? I definitely have the funds for it NOW, but when I bought it, I don't think I was able to pay for it, since it takes a couple days until Apple charges your card for a purchase. Any ideas? TL;DR- I have a $1.99 payment pending and can't add my card until its paid but I can't add my card to PAY the transaction, any help is appreciated [link] [comments] |
AirPort Extreme crashes when using USB network adapters Posted: 25 Nov 2019 06:00 PM PST Hello all, After searching and searching the r/HomeNetworking and r/apple subs I am at a total loss as to why my network crashes when I plug a USB ethernet adapter in the system. So let me give you a run down of what I am working with. Hardware: Modem -- Fios AC1750 Routers -- Apple AirPort Extreme TC (1), Apple AirPort Extreme (2) -- All running 7.9.1 firmware Switch -- NetGear GS205 (1) Hardwired accessories: NAS -- Synology DS918+ (1) Apple iTV (2) USB -C Hub Adapter Dongle (1) <--- problem child WaveLink Dual 4k USB-C docking station <--- problem child #2 Wireless devices: Phone, Laptops, iPad Running wireless everything is fine. I do have issues from time to time with the iTV's crashing the network, but setting them to always on helped a lot. The laptop docking stations are the real problem. If I plug an ethernet cable into either one with in two minutes the Office Router (one that connects to the Fios modem) crashes and takes down the internet. Immediately one of the secondary routers swaps to the primary spot, but is unable to connect to the modem. The only remedy is to unplug all the ethernet cables from the Office Router and restart. I've attached a diagram of my network, as well as the settings on the routers. If anyone has thoughts or advice, I'll give it a try. I've tried setting the Office router to DHCP & NAT with no success and Bridge Mode seems to be the most stable. 2019 Mac Book Pro 15" squeaky chirping noise coming from base of laptop Posted: 25 Nov 2019 05:58 PM PST I just bought a new mac book pro a few weeks ago and it has been making a very annoying noise. It happens anytime I type on the keyboard or shift the laptop in my lap and it sounds like two tittle bits of glass "tinging" against each other. It's coming from the base of the laptop and if I press my thumb against the center of the base it makes the noise. Has anyone else had this issue? I don't know if I should take my laptop in or if I should just try and open it to put some foam tape over the spot that tinging against the case. Would that void my warranty, and would apple even cover an issue like this if I were to bring it in? Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Maybe someone knows of a fix? [link] [comments] |
External HDD for photo library Posted: 25 Nov 2019 05:19 PM PST I have a large photo library (600 GB) that I want to put on an external HDD and access from my iMac (open, scroll through photos, import other photos, etc). Is a standard USB3 HDD fast enough to use reasonably for that purpose? Or do I need a thunderbolt SSD? I really don't want to spend that much money so hoping to get by with regular external drive I just don't know if performance opening a large photo library and using it will be too slow. Anyone doing similar and have Opinions? [link] [comments] |
[Catalina] “dhgvcdkldqnm” is damaged and can’t be opened. Doesn't show file location Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:33 PM PST UPDATE: The issue appears to be related to whether or not a user is an administrator. See my response to u/ctmurray below Hi all, Just updated to Catalina. As soon as I restarted, I got the error shown in the title. Google searches tell me that it's usually involved with an app, and say to delete and redownload it, or to remove using Terminal. The problem is, when I click "Show in Finder" nothing happens - so I have no idea which file is causing the problem. A google search for that seemingly meaningless string of letters reveals nothing. When I hit "OK", the same message reappears seconds later. This makes me think it could have to do with Finder (which is always open), but I really have no idea. I've tried restarting a few times and the message still appears. This issue is especially annoying since I can't just hide the message either - even as I'm typing this, the message box is overlayed on top of Chrome. My info: MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) macOS Catalina 10.15.1 SC of the message: https://imgur.com/a/B0pdoVS Any idea what might be the issue? Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Mac Pro disks failing one after the other Posted: 25 Nov 2019 05:14 PM PST A quiet afternoon i switched on my mac pro 3.1 with an SSD OS X disk and 3 more internal Hdds and boot in my bootcamp partition for some windows work. Following this, i restarted to my Mac system but with no success. My drive was not mounting and after lots of efforts in single user and safe mode i managed to see the drive, erase it and restore from backup. Immediately after i booted again and the system was up and running only to get another message that drive no2 was read only and i should back it up immediately. Until now i have failed to mount the drive volume which is a partition on the drive i have the bootcamp (which is mounted). Would this have to do anything with my Bootcamp partition? would it be possible for a virus in windows to b e causing all this? any ideas? [link] [comments] |

Is there hope for my iPad Air 2? Posted: 25 Nov 2019 04:38 PM PST I just picked up an iPad Air 2 for $20 with the intention of repairing it. This is whats happening:
Ive made sure the charging pins are clean and have left the iPad on a charger for a while but it has not booted. Am i looking at a problem that can be a simple as a battery replacement? Or could it be a logic board/lightning connector? I just hate to spend money on parts if im going to end up with a paperweight. I havent opened it up yet to check for loose connections since i didn't want to risk damaging the lcd, but that might be my next move. [link] [comments] |
