    [Discussion] Thoughts of a developer who is primarily a user: Update on Cydia for Chimera and Sileo on unc0ver

    I apologize in advance for the wall of text. It's simply because I am passionate about this community and hate to see the state it's in. After being into jailbreaking for years, I spend my time now trying to repair it and make it better for everyone. I hope you, the reader, gains something from this post. Also, good morning Americans. :)

    Who am I?

    • My name is Hayden. I am an 18 year old athlete and hobby developer. Most know me in this community as Diatrus. I've generally kept my twitter pretty quiet, as I don't enjoy too much publicity, but if you'd like to drop a follow, I'm sure you'll enjoy a few of my tweets. :)
    • I'm primarily known by the majority of avid jailbreakers as the guy who first brought a relatively bugless Sileo to unc0ver with the Sileo Installer. This obviously wasn't a perfect solution, especially after a major Sileo update that fully broke it on normal unc0ver.
      • Why did it break? Sileo began removing on-launch an important file for Cydia on unc0ver, and having Sileo at the cost of Cydia was not what I was working for. Ever since I joined this community earlier in the year I have been working to bridge the gap between the two toxic extremes of the community, and that comes with being able to use whatever you want with whatever jailbreak you want.
    • My next project was a solution to this issue: Shady's Unc0ver Dark. The goal of unc0ver dark was simple: bring Sileo and Cydia together side by side in a clean, seamless way, and maybe throw in some UI tweaks to go along with it. Boy, did we succeed. Unc0ver Dark featured multiple changes from normal Unc0ver right off the starting block, featuring updated apt, a dark mode, and a Cydia fork that was compatible with the change Sileo made that broke it before. Every since, Unc0ver Dark has featured the new uicache and quicker respring even before the unc0ver developers added it, and Sileo has continued to work without issue to this very day. I love the passionate group of developers and designers I work with on it, and we have a ton of fun trying to keep making it better and better.
    • When Chimera was released, I noticed its complete lack of Cydia and felt deja vu. I noticed pixelomer had came out with a solution called Cydia Universal. Alas, this seemed to cause more problems than it fixed, breaking hundreds, if not thousands, of devices that installed it. I decided I would do what I did with unc0ver + Sileo and bring Cydia to Chimera the right way. It was an astounding success. Cydia for Chimera was easily my most bug-free release initially, and I am still proud of how well the actual release went to this day.

    Everything seems great, why am I here?

    Not everything is as great as it seems. Let me explain. Most of you are part of a side in the jailbreak community. The sides have become extremely well defined over the past year: pwn20wnd vs coolstar. Everyone knows and understands that competition leads to innovation. What people forget is that civil competition leads to innovation. The rhetoric on both sides in this community has become reminiscent of a political environment, rather than a niche community who all love the same thing: freedom over their devices. Some people forget that jailbreaking is about the desire and drive to chose what you want to install on your device. Instead, some of the community take pride in shaming others for using _______ on their device instead of _______. The only thing to blame is the rift in the community. That rift is what I've tried hard to repair. However, the powers that be in this community don't like that idea.

    Neither coolstar nor pwn are saints, and neither of them are demons either. I threw away the notion that either of them is malicious long ago. Both have contributed great things to this community, and both have made their mistakes, on purpose or otherwise. This is not an attack thread, rather a thread explaining why, with the current attitude of both those people, my work attempting to bridge the gap between the two sides of the community is coming to a halt.

    • Regarding coolstar: I have spoken to coolstar on multiple occasions, in text and in voice chats. Star is generally a very reasonable person, and I really love him a ton as a friend. This isn't even mentioning his contributions to the community, such as the iOS 11 and A12 jailbreaks. Back on topic, it is no secret that coolstar doesn't like Saurik or Cydia. He has said so himself on many occasions. This is ok, and I understand where he comes from. He and Saurik have had a rocky relationship in the past, and Saurik isn't a perfect guy. Far from it, none of us are. However, in Chimera version 1.0.5, coolstar implemented a change that fully broke Cydia. This change was extremely minor: it disallowed setuid bins to access launchd. In layman terms, it made it so Cydia couldn't run everything it needed to properly function when it launched. As you can see in the linked post by Sam Bingner (very smart guy, one of the big behind the scenes artists behind Unc0ver, drop him a follow!), coolstar agreed to revert the change in the next update. Here we are 4 full updates later and no word, no fix. Upon being confronted about it (Listen from 1:14:34-1:17:01), he has said he "Doesn't know" when he'll fix it. While I suppose it is valid for him to think people have forgotten Cydia, that is not the case. I get messages daily asking when I can fix Cydia for Chimera and my only response is that it isn't my fault it's broken. While I love coolstar and all he's done for the community, he shows me that he either goes back on his promises or he's simply lazy. I assume the former, as it is an easy thing to revert. I've attempted to talk about it to him myself, but while nearly all of my messages to him are answered, he chooses to ignore any about Cydia.

    • Regarding pwn20wnd: On the other side of things, I have nothing but respect for pwn and his team that work on unc0ver. They have done well maintaining the only open source jailbreak as of right now, and I commend them for it. However, I cannot commend him for it personally because he has had me blocked for many months now. I don't remember the reason for it, and to be honest it may have been completely valid. However, when I have asked my team members and people close to him to get him to unblock me so we can talk, I have been met with silence from his end. This would be ok if he didn't accuse our fork of unc0ver of doing "nothing but changing the UI interface", which is simply a false statement. Anyone is free to check the Github for Unc0ver Dark and compare it to regular Unc0ver, and you will find there are fairly significant changes to achieve Sileo support. Pwn knows that, maybe he just doesn't like forks. Maybe he doesn't like me. The most likely scenario is he doesn't want his jailbreak being associated with Sileo, as it's made by the guy he hates so much, coolstar. In the actual post that comment was from, pwn detailed on how he was going to open source his jailbreak after 3 months from now on, the reason being: "Several people have forked the open source codebase to make tiny changes, largely to the user interface, rebrand it and release it in their own redistribution platforms with false claims about the changes." This would be a perfectly valid reason.. if it had happened recently. The last instance of this happening was the tw3lve fiasco from 3 months ago. However, it seems odd that Pwn is only now making this decision after 3 months. What happened? He says at the bottom of the post that the reason behind him changing is because he is adding substitute. However, this isn't actually a good reason. This is actually a mirror of what coolstar did with Chimera, keeping what he did secret so someone else couldn't use it. Simply put: He doesn't like Unc0ver Dark. His full reasons, only he knows, and he may never even tell the truth about his reasoning. Generally he words things in such a way as to seem above reproach to the community, rather than tell the full truth, reminiscent of a politician. All I can state are the facts: calling something a fork of Unc0ver and being respectful enough to not even change the name, simply adding "Dark" to the end, isn't a rebrand. We have also made 0 false claims about changes. Each change we claim you can find yourself in the code, or by simply using it.

    Can these issues be fixed?

    I'm going to wrap up, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading this far. These issues can be fixed in one of two ways: The big devs changing, or you, the community, changing. Coolstar and pwn20wnd absolutely hate each other, we all know that. I'm not one to question someone's opinion on another person, so I don't think they'll ever change on their own. They both have their sides of loyal community members who, for lack of a better phrase, will follow them to the grave.

    No, the only real way to fix the large rift and the slow phasing out of choice in the jailbreak community is to question everything and not take sides. I'll say it again, this community is becoming more of a political environment than a place for people to come and simply have fun. Because of that, you the community should take nothing at face value, not even this post. Both of the main developers lie to you, or mislead you, and are not always working in your interest as they seem. Yes, I understand they don't have to take the time to create the jailbreaks. That takes a lot of talent and knowledge. However, that is not an excuse to close off options or mislead your users because of a vendetta you have against one or multiple people.

    TL;DR: Cydia for Chimera breaking isn't my fault and I can't fix it, coolstar can. Unc0ver Dark development will be slowing down due to pwn disliking forks and close sourcing unc0ver for a set amount of time. I will continue trying to help the community as best I can.

    Update: More Blur Options, Artist Changes Color Based On Blur

    Max Bridgland has just released another tweak for iOS 12 that is his start to porting the iOS 13 music app over to iOS 12 and below. This simply adds a nice background of the album art playing currently to the background of the Music apps now playing screen.

    I and other testers, tested it with Mitusha and it worked fine. Some bugs with tweaks like Colorflow and Neried but otherwise works well. This is just a start and the first release of the tweak. There is much more to come in the future according to chats I've had with the developer.

    So when I go onto YouTube, twitter and reddit, all my notifications for that app go away. This is annoying if there are several videos, tweets or posts I'd like to look at. A tweak to stop the notifications from being removed would be helpful if possible.

    If you have an iPhone 7/7+/8/8+ then you know when your phone is off and you try to click the home button it doesn't click, it's just a flat surface. After trial and error with filza I figured out how to disable the home button click /vibration while the phone is on while the home 'button' still works like normal

    The first few minutes (maybe even hours) that you have the home button click/vibrations disabled , you'll be pushing really hard on the button because you're used to feeling that vibration but over time you'll get used to it and will be pressing softer.

    If enough people want a tutorial, I'll make one. Sadly I don't know how to make tweaks so this will be a manual method in filza , maybe someone later on can make a quick tweak for it . Anyways, do you guys want a tutorial? If enough people do I'll post it

    Edit : so far everything else works fine for me , nothing was affected and I've had this for 3 hours now, but messing with system files with filza is really dangerous. So just know you're taking a risk if you do this
