4 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 22) [+ bonus podcast about mobile gaming Episode 2]

    Posted: 21 Jun 2019 04:10 AM PDT

Happy Friday, fellow mobile gamers! Episode #2 of our Mobile Gaming Podcast is finally out - and you can find the video-version on YouTube, and the audio-only version on your favorite Podcast-apps(coming soon to iTunes too).

As for my mobile gaming recommendations this week, they include a fun solitaire-like card game, a stress-free puzzle game with a Tetris-like twist, a fully-fledged 2D MMORPG, and an over-the-top dinosaur-riding online shooter.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 22 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Here are this week's games:

Card Crawl [Game Size: 86 MB] ($5)

    Genre: Card / Solitaire-like / RPG'ish – Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

Card Crawl is a fun dungeon crawler solitaire-like card game with perfect-for-mobile 3-4 minute play-sessions and a simple core gameplay loop that grows more advanced the more cards we unlock.

The goal is to get through an entire card deck by drawing 4 cards at a time. However, before we can draw the next cards, we have to get those 4 cards down to just 1 by equipping, discarding, or attacking the drawn cards - a task that is more difficult than it sounds!

I like the game because of how well it kept me hooked throughout the play-sessions by making me think that I still had a chance at winning until the very last moment, which is what keeps the gameplay exciting.

Favo! [Game Size: 138 MB] (free)

    Genre: Puzzle - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

Favo! is a unique stress-free puzzle game where we have to link two or more elements of either red, blue, or green color together to score points. We do this by dragging "panels" (groups of elements) from the bottom of the screen and onto the board.

If we run out of space on the board, it's game-over. To avoid this from happening, we use "merge" panels to merge all tiles of the same color into just a single tile, making Favo! feel a bit like a new take on the core Tetris gameplay (merging tiles is the same as filling up a row in Tetris).

The game's fun and gets surprisingly difficult rather quickly, and the few ads that might scare some away, can be removed through a single $3 iAP, making this game an easy recommendation :)

LaTale W [Total Game Size: 871 MB] (free)

Genre: MMORPG / 2D / RPG – Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Little

    tl;dr review:

LaTale W is a fully-fledged fantasy 2D MMORPG based on the 2006 PC MMORPG by the same name. This means we've got crafting, an advanced character stats system, a proper skill-tree with both active and passive skills, player housing, and a game design that incentivizes us to explore the entire world to collect crafting resources.

Just like MapleStory M, LaTale W IS designed as an auto-combat MMORPG, but unlike MapleStory, the monetization is rather free-to-play-friendly, as we're e.g. not forced to pay to refill "auto combat" time, and we don't have to pay for pickup-pets either.

The game's main drawbacks are that there's a lack of team-based content, we run out of inventory space too quickly (although that can be expanded for free over time!), and that the monetization allows us to acquire everything through iAPs, although everything can be grinded as well.

If you want to do an auto-combat MMORPG that can be played a bit like an idle game, this is the way to do it in my opinion, as the game has a healthy mix of content that can be auto'ed, and content that can't.

Full Metal Monsters [Total Game Size: 619 MB] (free)

Genre: Shooter / PvP - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Full Metal Monsters is an over-the-top 5v5 team-based multiplayer third-person shooter where we ride and fly on the backs of machine-gun-equipped dinosaurs as we capture key areas and shoot down the opponents in the game's single conquest game-mode. Yes.

The matches are quick, the controls work well (settings allow us to change between manual and semi-auto shooting), there's a ton of dinosaurs and weapons to unlock and upgrade, and most importantly; the gameplay is just really fun.

As for the monetization, on the one hand we earn premium currency through gameplay (and incentivized video ads) and even the best dinosaurs and weapons can be grinded, but on the other hand, the best dinosaur can be unlocked immediately by paying $100. Yes, $100!

To be fair, in my time with the game, I didn't run into any unfair matches, but long-time players HAVE reported that the monetization ruins the gameplay unless you're willing to push through the grind. Sadly.

iOS 13 Beta 2 adds support for "select" button on XBox One and PS4 controllers.

    Posted: 21 Jun 2019 05:12 AM PDT

I tested it with both controllers in Moonlight and SteamLink (doesn't work in PS4 remote play app yet). Both start and select buttons function as expected.

Touchpad (and touchpad button) on PS4 controller, and PS/Xbox buttons do not work.

In the market for a 20$ game, maybe you can help. Adventure/Point and click or RPG.

    Posted: 21 Jun 2019 09:29 AM PDT

I was just given a gift card to the App Store, and I generally do not buy apps, there are a few exceptions, but I've never spent over 7.

My favorite mobile gaming genre is adventure, point and click. Just finished Thimbleweed Park and am going through Beneath a Steel Sky.

I'm thinking about going for some of the Wadjet Eye games, or Blackwell series, but as for as RPG I also really want to play Final Fantasy IX again.

What would you guys recommend? This is likely the last time I'll ever consider putting more than 5 bucks into the App Store.

Oh, and if you have an additional recommendation, offline mode is imperative.

    Thanks guys!

    Any portrait mode MMO?

    Posted: 21 Jun 2019 10:01 AM PDT

Can be casual, auto mode ok for grinding, prefer not gacha and would be great if can be played one handed. Any decent games out there exist?

Games with multitask (split screen) support for iPad Pro

    Posted: 21 Jun 2019 12:03 AM PDT

I can't find anything current on this and I understand it might be a niche request. Now that I'm using my iPad Pro more than ever, I'm looking for games that will run alongside stuff like Twitter or Reddit or even YouTube while in split screen (multitask) mode. The only one I know of so far is Threes which works perfectly fine on iPad but it's an old game and I was hoping there were newer ones I didn't know about. Anyone have any confirmed games to suggest?

On what device(s) are you playing?

I play on a iPhone 7 and for some games the smaller screen is really a letdown.

    Portrait, Premium RPGs

    Posted: 20 Jun 2019 06:09 PM PDT

I'm in a perpetual search for portrait mode, turn based RPGs, preferably playable offline. The Knights of Pen and Paper series left a void in my gaming life when I finished them and I'm looking for substitutes. What would you recommend?

Looking for a good, non-idle tycoon game.

    Posted: 20 Jun 2019 01:56 PM PDT

I have played the original roller coaster tycoons and almost all kairosoft games so I am looking for a tycoon game where I actually have choice and can run things how I want. Preferably free.

Searching for good games for iPad 2018

    Posted: 20 Jun 2019 12:30 PM PDT

Hello. I recently bought a 2018 iPad and now I'm looking for some good games.

I've looked at the App Store but there is so much crappy games I thought I'd give reddit a try instead.

Games that are cheap and pushes additional content or ads in my face make me sick. I'd rather pay a fair price and get a full game that I'll enjoy. DoorKickers is a prime example of this.

I like strategy, management and to some extent adventure/rpg games.

My current iOS library: - Rebel Inc (liked it but it felt a little bit empty) - Risk (love it) - Bloons TD (a bit shallow and way too much pushy to sell more) - Kingdom Rush (one of the best and nicest looking iOS games ever) - Mini metro (like it but it stresses me out too much. Would like a similar game but more like Transport Fever but with Mini metros design) - DoorKickers (10/10)

My steam library: - Cities Skylines - Factorio (would love something similar for iOS) - Gold Rush - The Long Dark - MudRunner - Portal 1 & 2 - Civilization 5 (would pay ALOT for a port to iOS) - Wildlands - Transport Fever

Edit (additions) Something similar to FTL (but not as impossible 😅) would also be interesting. Battlevoid: Harbringer gave me a few hours of fun. But it's a big unbalanced and shallow.

I look forward to see some tips and suggestions :)

Do you guys think iOS 13 will support also USB Controllers?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2019 03:36 PM PDT

I've seen people using XBOX One wireless controllers (and PS4) on iOS 13, but I am that type of an person who absolutely hates wireless peripherals, so I only have USB XBOX controllers.

I tried my controllers with the 3.0 Camera Adapter and nothing really happened. I also tried with external power.

I asked around and people are saying iOS 13 will only support wireless controllers. Do you guys think this id true?
