Apple TV APP Degrading Picture Quality Over Discrete Movie Apps? Posted: 15 May 2019 05:27 PM PDT My setup: Apple TV 4K>Denon X4400H>Vizio P65-C1 (2016 model) and I've had my ATV4K (tvOS 12.3; I'm in the beta pool) for 18 months and it's been fine, but in the past couple of weeks I started noticing flashing black splotches in dark colored dim areas. The blinked on and off 2-3 times per second and seemed limited to Dolby Vision content and only dim areas/dark colors. Bright areas are fine. Some example scenes:
I initially thought something was going wrong with my TV because I noticed this immediately after I'd updated the firmware and a factory reset on it didn't help, but checking BR2049 on Vudu showed it looked OK. Because a bunch of impacted titles aren't in Movies Anywhere, I was limited to the ATV4K for testing, but it was consistent. The plot thickened when I picked up a Vizio PQ65-F1 (2018 model) last Friday, hooked it up, and discovered I was getting the same flashing. I was getting really bummed out until I tried going into the iTunes Movies app and started looking at the problematic scenes and discovered they were looking fine, no flashing! Huh? Launch a title from the Apple TV = flashing. Launch from iTunes = NO flashing. Discussed this with my friend who has an ATV4K and a good overlap with my library, but has it hooked up to a LG C6 OLED and he reports seeing the same flashing when looking at titles in Apple TV app, but not iTunes. This indicates it's not a Vizio or my ATV4K at fault. (I don't think he's in the beta and don't know his version; I've pinged him and will update.) I thought this was limited to DV titles because most HDR movies are DV on iTunes, but tonight I was looking at The Fast and the Furious (the OG one) which is encoded HDR10 and the time-lapse night-to-day transition after the opening heist had ridiculous posterization. Watch it in iTunes and it's much smoother; Vudu smoother yet. This has been impossible to research because it Apple TV (the app) and Apple TV (the device) have the same freaking name. Hoping others can test and report movies and scenes which are jacked up when launched by the app vs. iTunes. Please include movie, scene or time index, HDR format, services checked, equipment, etc. to see if there are any common factors. TIA! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 15 May 2019 07:36 AM PDT I have an Apple TV 4 and have a 4K tv that upscales. Do you think I should upgrade to the 4K tv? Will that help it will the display upgrade be marginal? [link] [comments] |
My AppleTV randomly disconnects from the internet Posted: 15 May 2019 12:06 PM PDT I'm not sure what's wrong. I have an AppleTV 4(k?) that disconnects randomly. My router is on the first floor, the tv on the second. My phone and other devices don't have any issues with it the WiFi. They DO have issues when I'm on the third floor, though. The TV will turn on and let me browse YouTube for a bit, then disconnect. I restart it, and it's fine. It doesn't usually DC when I watch Netflix, or listen to music. I went to the Apple store, and they gave me a brand new one, but I'm having the same issues with this one. If it was WiFi, wouldn't my other devices have issues, too? [link] [comments] |
