Posted: 12 May 2019 07:32 AM PDT I've had my AirPods since Christmas, and I feel like an idiot for not stumbling across this sooner. Angling them in my ears, so the dongle is at a 45° angle instead of pointing straight down, just improved the sound quality immensely. First of all I bought some of those silicone covers that help the AirPod grip tighter into the ear, and they're the type that let you close the lid of the case, but I still wasn't getting the stellar sound performance that some people were claiming. I didn't think so many people were suffering from seeing The Emperor's New Clothes. I thought maybe they'd never experienced the frequency range of Sennheisers or a decent pair of noise reduction over-the-ears. Compared to some in the ear headphones I've had through the years (like these), I have to admit I was feeling a little disappointed. And yes, I'm that old. Fifty years old, almost. But yesterday I saw someone wearing theirs at an angle. It got me thinking so I put the buds in, started playing something with a decent range of frequencies ("We Live Forever" by The Prodigy) and rotated one in my ear slowly. Still muffled. Still muffled. Still muffl - holy crap, the sound was being piped directly into my brain, it was incredible. I'm not an ENT specialist so I don't know what's going on with my inner ear, but I think it's a two-fold thing. Putting in the AirPod points the sound close to my eardrum, but my ear canal there is a narrow oval. Rotating it points the sound directly to the eardrum (or more so that the sound is louder), and the turn widens the ear canal so it's more like O instead of 0 in shape. Whatever it is: it works. I thought, "this must have been mentioned on the subreddit before" but Google's first hit has a discussion with not many comments, not many votes, it doesn't seem like it's been a major topic. Which to me is weird because of how many pairs of AirPods have been sold. If you have AirPods and you've been a little disappointed with the sound, put them in your ear and then slowly tilt the dongle towards the front of your face. See if that helps. Then buy some cheap silicone covers so they'll grip in the ear better. TL;DR - how I improved the sound from my AirPods with one tweak. [link] [comments] |
