Stopped by a local e-waste recycler yesterday, found a couple fantastic vintage Macs Posted: 10 May 2019 06:19 AM PDT I was really bummed when our local e-waste place (one of my favorite sources for interesting / weird stuff) shut down several months ago. Happily, I learned today that they relocated just a few miles away and are back in business! I ran over after work and ended up buying a Mac Plus (with keyboard, keyboard cable and mouse!) and a blue-and-white PowerMac G3, all for $30. The seller said the Mac Plus chimes when turned on, but nothing shows on the CRT. I haven't tested it myself yet (hope to put some time into it this weekend), but it seems at least possible that the brightness knob is turned down, or the yoke connector came loose, or it's just a totally-unsurprising case of bad capacitors. Even if the electronics are beyond repair (which I doubt), the case is in great shape (other than being very dirty), and the mouse / keyboard are both in great condition too. I'm also really psyched about the PowerMac G3 - it's a pretty under-powered system by modern standards, but the look of the machine is so iconic to me, I couldn't pass it up. Note that the first thing I did was pop out the little Maxell battery from the G3's motherboard - it was only just starting to leak, so thankfully I don't see any signs of serious corrosion. I don't know if the machine works at all, but I'm very curious what might be on those two HDD's. One of my earliest college memories is of an afternoon I spent in the Graphics Lab at my school in the summer of 1999 - the lab was overflowing with these blue-and-white G3's, and I'd never been in the presence of so much computing power before. Good times! [link] [comments] |

Rank your Apple products from best to worst Posted: 10 May 2019 10:05 AM PDT Mine: iPhone X – I'm still amazed by how great this thing is every time I use it. The gesture system and Face ID seriously blows every other phone out of the water (except the other X models ofc). Battery life is still great, and it's survived quite a few drops too. Best Apple product I've ever owned. Apple Watch Series 4 – Hardware-wise it's pretty much perfect. My only complaint is that watchOS still feels a little cumbersome at times. But overall it's a fantastic product. AirPods – After 2 years, these things are really starting to show their age: battery life is pretty bad, and connectivity issues are becoming more regular. They're great when they work, but that's no longer the vast majority of the time. MacBook Pro 2016 – The display is gorgeous, the trackpad is perfect, the design is unbelievably thin and light. Unfortunately the keyboard is garbage and the battery life sucks. The logic board also crapped out on me less than a year in. Definitely the least reliable Apple product I've owned. Speculation about IOS 13 compatibility Posted: 10 May 2019 01:14 PM PDT Some of you have seen this article. It suggested removing the iPhone 6/6 Plus, but I kind of expected that with the 1GB or ram. But what surprised me (and most of you) was the rumor suggesting the SE would get cut. I highly disagree that this will be the case, I'll show why below. If you want to quickly see what I think will be the IOS 13 compatibility list is without my bla-bla-bla, it's at the bottom. Just before I start, I'd like to mention that I'm pulling my data from here. Here's what I think will happen, in terms of the iPhone. The 5S and 6 will get cut, but the 6S and SE will stay. I've used a 6 plus, 6s, and a SE, and I can tell that the 6 is heavily restricted by it having only 1GB of ram. The 6S not only has a doubling amount of 2Gb of ram, but it is the first phone to feature a blazing fast NVME SSD over a standard NAND ssd. Both of these make the one year older 6 a much harder phone to use on a daily basis than the 6S, it's just so slow compared to it. The thing is, the SE has both of these things, and is really just like a 6S. Theres no way Apple will kill the SE For the iPad Minis, this one is easy. IOS 12 currently supports the iPad Mini 2, 3, 4, and 5 right now. The Mini 2 and 3 both use a A7 SOC which is found on the 5S, and the 4 uses a A8. I'm guesstimating that the iPad Mini 4 and 5 will make the cut while the 2 and 3 won't. Even though the iPad Mini 4 has a A8 like on the iPhone 6 that I just predicted to not get IOS 13, it does have 2Gb of ram, and it was sold on Apple's website until March this year. Now the article I linked only mentioned the iPad Mini 2 to get cut, and didn't mention the iPad mini 3 (which are very identical to each other). For the normal iPads, I think all the iPad Pros will get IOS 13, and the only iPad that will be stuck on IOS 12 will be the original iPad Air. It has a A7 which as we've discussed, is a bit on the old side. It also is the last iPad to have 1Gb of ram as the iPad Air 2 bumped it up also. As you might have guessed, I'm predicting the iPod Touch 6 to be cut also. I've had nothing but battery and software issues with it, and it's too slow to be able to get IOS 13. It also has a slowed A8 SOC so yeah... Here's a quick recap iPhone 6S/SE or later get IOS 13 iPhone 5S, 6, 6Plus removed iPad mini 4 and 5 get IOS 13 iPad mini 2, 3 removed iPad Air 2/iPad 6 or later get IOS 13 iPad Air 1 removed iPod Touch 7 (lol nope) iPod Touch 6 removed Thanks for reading, please tell me what you think of my speculation below :) [link] [comments] |
