iOS incoming call screen takeover is annoying... but so is MacOS...

    Posted: 10 May 2019 10:14 AM PDT

I have seen many complaints about how iOS handles incoming calls and many of them have merits. It is annoying to either have to wait until it times out, dismiss, or answer before you can resume whatever you were doing.

MacOS has an equally annoying (to me) quirk that I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed. Whenever a call comes in on my iPhone and I have "Calls from iPhone" enabled on my Mac the notification comes up in the upper right corner. That would be fine on it's own but what also happens, every single time, is it switches so a seemingly random desktop space. I am almost always in a full screen app and it is extremely annoying to be booted out of whatever I was going just because a call came in. Is this a bug? Is it a "feature"? Is there a fix for this?

Macbook doesn't recognize speakers plugged in after waking from sleep.

    Posted: 10 May 2019 03:08 PM PDT

It's a strange issue, and I haven't been able to solve it yet, but the title really reflects the core of the issue.

I have my Macbook Pro set up in a desktop environment I keep it docked 95% of the time and when not in use, it's in sleep mode. But whenever I need to use it and wake it up, I need to physically unplug the 3.5mm speaker jack and plug it back in for the MBP to recognize that it has speakers plugged in.

    Has anyone experienced this before?

How to associate file to Wine (WineBottler) app?

    Posted: 11 May 2019 01:08 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have MacOS Mojave. Successfully installed my favourite windows program IrfanView to open images.

Used a WineBottler for that. Now I can open IrfanView.app and open images in it without problem.

But I would like to associate .JPG and other image files to open with that .app. I can see it in "Open with..", but it says this problem:

The document "37.jpg" could not be opened. wine cannot open files in the "JPEG image" format.

I guess there could be done some settings in Wine to tell it to open this extension in IrfanView. But how? Any clues please?

Unable to fully uninstall Tuxera NTFS

Unable to fully uninstall Tuxera NTFS

    Hi community,

recently I (stupidly) installed Tuxera NTFS on my MacBook. Now that I have found Mounty I wanted to uninstall Tuxera NTFS because the trial version ran out.
Since the normal way of trashing it didn't work, I went through all the folders inside /~Library and deleted everything I could find of Tuxera NTFS. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to do the whole job. Anytime I plug in my portable harddrive (NTFS) a popup from Tuxera NTFS appears (see image).
Has anyone ever dealt with this issue? Technically there isn't anything left from the software. At least that's what I thought.

    Any help is appreciated.

Is network sharing fundamentally broken on OS X?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 04:57 AM PDT

It seems to me that using network shares on OS X is fundamentally broken, since at least Yosemite.

Ignoring the debacle that was the change to Apple's own SMB implementation, and the deprecation of AFP. Mounting of network shares is heinously broken.

There seems to be a few different issues with mounting of network shares on OS X:

Firstly, there is no way since Yosemite to ensure that a network share remains mounted. If you add the network share as a login item, as is encouraged by Apple, it will connect only at login. This means that if the network share isn't available at the time of login (for example, if the computer isn't connected to the network), the user must manually mount it later. It also means that if the network connection is dropped or changed after mounting, the user must manually re-mount it.

It used to be possible to use the automount daemon to ensure that that the share could be consistently mounted to the same mountpoint when it was used, but the automounter has been fundamentally broken since Yosemite. It now creates the mountpoint with the permissions of whichever user accessed it first, which could be the root user. This means there is a race condition as to the ownership of the automounted share. This leaves only using the finder to automatically mount at login as the only viable option for any form of automatic mounting of network shares.

The second major issue is around the way that network shares connected in Finder are added to the /Volumes mount point. Mount points under /Volumes are created with the same name as the network share, and incremented if there are conflicts. Say, for instance, that I wish to mount smb://server1/documents and smb://server2/documents. These would be mounted at /Volumes/documents and /Volumes/documents-1 respectively. Similarly, if there are two users logged into the same Mac and both connect the same network share, mount points similar to the ones above will be created. All fine and good, right? No - and this issue can lead to data loss.

Say I use Finder to connect to smb://server1/documents, and open a file called helloworld.pages in Pages. Pages will access that file at /Volumes/documents/helloworld.pages.

Now, suppose I do this on a laptop, and I take the laptop out of the house and return. The mount will no longer be valid, and Pages will complain that it can't access the file at /Volumes/documents/helloworld.pages. I correctly guess that it's because the network share is no longer mounted, so I use finder to reconnect to the server. Because /Volumes/documents already exists, the share will be mounted at /Volumes/documents-1. This doesn't help Pages find the file, because the path is different.

Now unfortunately, apps like Pages will refuse to even let you do a Save As... if the original file isn't accessible. In other words, if you work on a file over a network share and lost the connection, there is a very real chance you will lose your work.

The automounter used to provide a solution to this problem, but unfortunately is not a viable option. This is on top of the myriad issues with Apple's SMB implementation, which admittedly has been getting better, but still often requires many configuration changes to get usable speeds.

So what's everyone's suggestions on how to use network shares reliably on OS X?

Should I use "NTFS for Mac" or reformat the drive? Confused, PLEASE HELP!

    Posted: 10 May 2019 02:10 PM PDT

So I recently purchased a Seagate 4TB External Hard Drive for the sole purpose of backing up my photos/videos/music from my MacBook. The HD came formatted NTFS (not really sure what that entails) and there was a "NTFS For Mac" software that was included. From my understanding the software is supposed to help me transfer things from Windows to Mac freely. BUT I only have Macs, and I doubt I'll ever need a file from anything windows. With that being said, wouldn't it just be better to ditch the "NTFS For Mac" software since I won't ever use windows? It seems counterintuitive to keep the HD formatted as a Windows HD where I need a software to use it on my Mac, when in actuality I'll never use it on windows. Shouldn't I just reformat the HD to be 100% Mac formatted or is there something I'm missing? I'm pretty good with technology but I'm not an expert. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks

    Chrome Extentions in Safari?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 12:19 PM PDT

    Hello All,

I've recently purchased a MacBook Air, and I'd like to move to Safari as my main browser. Chrome seems to really bog down the Processing Power of the laptop... Anyone know about Google Chrome Helper?

Anyways I use Gmail extensions like HubSpot, and a few others. When I use Gmail in Safari, I'd like to be able to use the integration features between HubSpot and Gmail in Safari. Is that possible?

    .gsm to mp3 converter?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 12:23 PM PDT

I have a decade-old, grandfathered-in free account with jConnect (used to be jFax and eFax). The j2 Messenger for Mac doesn't work - it hasn't been updated in over a decade - and I just received a voicmail (probably spam) that can't be listened to online, only downloaded as a .gsm file.

If I can't listen to the file I won't be heartbroken, since no one who knows me has the virtual fax number assigned to me.

But still, I'd like to be able to listen to or convert the file if it's possible.

Are there any free macOS apps or converters that could help me?

Has anyone built a custom eGPU for Mac?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 09:31 AM PDT

I have just made a switch to my new MBP13 but realized that the dedicated GPU is not sufficient to power two external monitors without severe performance drops.

As I have a PC with an AMD graphics card inside along with a PSU, I was wondering if I can somehow use these two peripherals for an eGPU setup? I am not looking to spend a ton and would prefer a cheap solution rather than spending 300 bucks on something like a Razer Core.

    Thanks in advance.

Fusion Drive Driving(lol) me Insane 2017 27" Imac

    Posted: 10 May 2019 10:04 AM PDT

I've got a 2017 27" Imac with the fusion drive, factory partitioned (27.69gb/1tb), and ever since purchase have been having massive issues with the fusion drive being constantly full.

The drive has virtually none of my actual files on it, but is full of System and Other Volumes in container, at 20.45 and 6.55gb respectively

I've run daisydisk which shows me some files on the disk, but mostly hidden space and other volumes

The computer is pretty much unusable at this point as the drive is completely full. Not sure what I can delete to free up space or avoid the "other volumes" issue

Possible to create 'live' or 'interactive' filing desktop/wallpaper?

    Posted: 10 May 2019 03:10 PM PDT

Possibly an unpopular opinion: I can't stand the Apple/Mac desktop/filing system for some reason. I love most things about the computer regarding functionality, but I just can't stand how the folder display has barely evolved.

I just wish there were different formatting options to satisfy my creative & visual nature. I've always been that way so once something gets put into a folder, it likely never gets looked at again.
Anyone know if it would be possible to create a 'live' or interactive wallpaper/background that would act as a digital filing system in and of itself? Something similar to a real filing cabinet that would open and close (like a visual box) vs. open the paper-like finder that displays a list of text. Maybe icons designed to visualize the folder 'weight' (darker shade if more docs, lighter if somewhat empty).

Open to suggestions if there's somewhere better to post this. :)

Time Machine stopping after "preparing backup" - logs included

    Posted: 10 May 2019 06:07 AM PDT

For the past several weeks, Time Machine has not been working on my MacBook Pro (running Mojave). It looks for the backup disk (a WD My Cloud connected to my wifi router), then starts "preparing backup," and then after just a few seconds, it stops.

I've put the logs in a pastebin here: https://pastebin.com/n3qZBb77. But I'm not savvy enough to make sense of them. Can anyone see what the problem is?

    Thanks alot!

Notifications don't appear until after Mac wakes from sleep

    Posted: 10 May 2019 06:44 AM PDT

Hello. Beginning about one week ago—with no major update, or anything—my MacBook Pro, running 10.14.4 Mojave suddenly stopped showing most notifications when they arrive. (The exception to this is some Messages notifications.) What happens now is that I get a flurry, sometimes 10 or 20, *of notifications all at once after I wake the computer from sleep, after a few minutes or overnight, it makes no difference. I've restarted the Mac several times, turned off notifications and turned them on again, and nothing has made a difference. Has this happened to anyone else? Thank you!

Macbook not charging, trying to reset smc.

    Posted: 10 May 2019 02:13 PM PDT

    On Sierra.

Mid 2012 13inch MBP, Battery stopped charging, desperately trying to get the SMC to reset to see if that will fix it.

Using the buttons to reset the SMC while it is off does not work for me, the macbookpro just boots up and the lights on my magsafe do not change color/turnoff/etc

I am attempting to do it manually through the EFI shell. I am able to boot into it and load it up from the right directory and when I do this command:

    SmcFlasher.efi -reset 1

    the shell replies back:

    Error: invalid option 2 '1'

    Can anyone help with this?

I have seen and been using the information from this thread: https://old.reddit.com/r/osx/comments/b282q8/trying_to_reset_smc_but_the_system_just_boots_up/eisjs7a/

Mojave- Please wait for official rollout.

    Posted: 10 May 2019 01:23 PM PDT

Hi, I am relatively new to MacOS and its workings. Recently I got a MacBook Pro of mid 2014 with Sierra installed in it, so after a while I thought of upgrading it to mojave. I read the official guide and saw that my MacBook Pro can support mojave, so I downloaded it from App Store. But once once the download was complete, a popup box appeared displaying the message "Please wait for official rollout".

Am I missing something here, is mojave not released for my region?

High Sierra - After reformat, all permissions/keys reset after restart, every time.

    Posted: 10 May 2019 06:06 AM PDT

I have a Macbook pro 2011. I had to reformat and reinstall all programs and High Sierra.

    - After the reformat and reinstall, I have lost all permissions. I can reset the permissions, via get info and via terminal however, after restarting my laptop all permissions are reverted back again. I also tried to do this through safe mode and through recovery modes with the exact same outcomes.

    - Additionally, I noticed that settings and and certain product keys are also removed and must be reentered every time. This is very frustrating. I thought I fresh install would have things running smoothly again, but it seems this is a bit headache now.

    - Finally, there is a High Sierra update (Security update 2019-002) that I cannot install no matter what, I tried through the app store, and also downloading the manual update, and tried installing that through, safe mode and recovery mode and nothing works.

    - When I had to reinstall, my High Sierra bootable installer was encountering errors so I had to use recovery to install Lion, then upgrade to El Capitan and then to High Sierra. Not sure if this has anything to do with my problems. But I think the security update is probably also not working because of this permissions issue. Are there deeper permissions settings that I need to change? Can anyone tell me where I need to go or how I can do this?

Any help/ information would be GREATLY appreciated.

    FileVault

    Posted: 10 May 2019 09:32 AM PDT

Is there any way to see when FileVault was turned on?

Bored, I was cruising through system preferences just now and noticed that file vault had been enabled and a recovery key had been set. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I did not enable it myself nor would I have chosen the recovery key instead of the iCloud option.

I use a 10 digit alpha numeric passcode for my login that no one knows but me, I don't have a problem with it being enabled if that's the default but I would prefer to use the iCloud option or at least create the recovery key myself....any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, what are your thoughts about using FileVault? Should I re-enable it once it is done decrypting or would that cause a problem? Thanks for your time

Re-enabling USB port for Storage // Help

    Posted: 10 May 2019 05:30 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I hope I am not totally off topic but I need help.

    I have:

    MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017)

    2.9 GHz Intel Core i7

    16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

    Radeon Pro 560 4096 MB

Intel HD Graphics 630 1536 MB

    Running:

    MacOS Mojave, 10.14.3

Company I work for blocks the usb ports for the purposes of transfer. Ergo -> I cannot copy anything on or from the external hard drive. All the devices show up, I can see whats on them but I cannot copy files from them either way (whether its the usb key or external storage hdd) .Which makes my life very inconvenient. Can you guide me in order to unblock the ports? I tried googling, I find lots of articles about how to block them but nothing about re-enabling them.

    Thx!
