Apple replaced my 2015 MacBook Pro with a 2018 MacBook Pro

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 05:27 AM PST

So I had the Anti-reflective coating issue on my 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro. I had the display replaced 2 times because of the extended 4 year program. It finally happened for a 3rd time. I spoke to a senior rep over the phone about replacing the whole unit...he agreed to give me a replacement laptop of the same value. So I scored a 2018 MacBook Pro 15 inch! So excited to have this beast!!

Edit: A lot of people are saying negative things about the 2018 MacBook Pro. I'm not complaining. As a college student this is an amazing upgrade. I'm a professional photographer and the processing power is insane.

Edit 2: Here is more information about the display replacement program Staingate

I wanted an iPad app that could control HomeKit, Apple TV, Sonos and more...so I made one myself!

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 10:57 AM PST

I wrote this app because I wanted to be able to control my entire house, including my AppleTV, Roku, Sonos and Chromecasts. So this app merged it all into one nice view.

You can also create routines to combine actions for all these things. For example I have a dinner routine which pauses the TV, plays soft dinner music, and turns on the dinner lights. I have a bedtime one that turns off the lights and plays white noise. These support siri shortcuts so you can say "Hey Siri dinner time" to execute.

(The tile view for the homekit accessories is coming in an update in a few days, the current build has the homekit devices as rows, like the screenshots in the appstore show)

Does anyone here use Apple products and services entirely (no Google, no Amazon, etc.)? What's it like being "all in" completely with Apple?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 07:43 PM PST

Short version: I spend way too much time reading about and obsessing over tech rather than just enjoying it and consuming content. I thought it might be easier just to go entirely 100% into the Apple ecosystem and not look back. Have any of you done this? Do you regret it? Do you ever feel locked in?

The WiFi on my XS is so bad that I end up using my 3 year old iPad for all my streaming needs.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 11:04 AM PST

This is ridiculous honesty. My XS struggles to stream Youtube, Netflix, Hulu but my iPad mini 2 streams at highest quality almost instantly. WiFi setting resets and phone resets have done nothing to help.

Do any use iCloud mail as your main email provider?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 12:37 AM PST

I've been using Gmail since the start, Also have an Outlook account that forwards to Gmail. While I like the way it can find out thinks like hotel books, flights etc and add them to the calendar I don't like the way they snoop.

I have an iCloud mail account but have never used it as it looks very basic but then I'm not a big emailer anyway, I only need basic features I guess.

Do you use iCloud mail and is it good enough?

Airplay 2 on Apple TV 4K resolution

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 12:34 AM PST

Question for owners: does airplay casting photos from my iPhone 6S display on the Apple TV 4K using my phone's photo resolution (12MP), 4K, or 1080p? Ie, does airplay downscale the photo on tv?

    The TV app is Annoying

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 06:47 PM PST

I was fairly accustomed to not seeing the full titles of the shows I was watching on my tiny iPhone, but when I discovered it doesn't even show the full titles on my iPad I was really bugged. There's no reason this should be a thing on a 10 inch tablet.

How long is A10 Fusion going to be relevant?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:00 PM PST

Hi everyone, I broke my current iPad Air 2 yesterday and after some time choosing I decided to get the 2018 iPad. I occasionally do gaming and mostly going to use it for movies, shows and YouTube. How long do you think is the A10 going to be supported and work well with newer versions of iOS?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 02:08 AM PST

For some unknown reason every app that has camera access allowed has changed its settings and has removed the camera access , i can't change it in settings as no option to change the camera access appears. Also if i go into privacy and go on camera it says there is no apps requesting camera access , any ideas on how to help?

MacBook Pro with latest OS question.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 11:34 PM PST

Is there a way or app to set a system/OS wide EQ? I'm using Soundpeat Bluetooth ear buds for gaming and the highs are fatiguing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That-a-Way, my latest app, is now free!

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 02:56 AM PST

    Hey Guys!

I've spent some time working on another iOS exclusive game after school.

That-a-Way is a game where you, the ball, have to avoid several enemies as they move in your direction, in an unpredictable manner.

The game features tiny haptic feedback when pressing buttons, 3D touch, a share button, statistics, local notifications, sounds, and a mute option. I've also recently learnt how to allow users to not follow through with a button press!

I'd be glad if you would check it out and give me some honest feedback. I appreciate all the comments, whether critical or positive!

Unimpressed with AirPlay 2...bugs, skips, lack of flexibility

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 09:34 AM PST

I have to say, I was really looking forward to airplay 2 and Apple actually bringing Airplay into the modern age. What has been delivered, unfortunately, still feels like a beta (or even alpha) product.

I started out with one HomePod. While this generally works reliably, there are times (about 1 in 10) when AirPlay just wouldn't connect and required either power cycling the HomePod or the iOS device. The lag is also ridiculous. You hit pause or tell Siri to pause, and it's at least two seconds before that command is honored. Contrast to Chromecast Audio, when controlling from the phone elicits nearly instant responses from the target speaker(s), I'm left asking why this still feels delayed like the AirPlay of old.

I added another HomePod to try out the stereo pair and see how that sounds. I have to say, it amazes me how good it sounds for just two little speakers, but it also saddens me that such a great speaker is hampered by the lack of a generic audio input and requires audio to be airplayed to it. Also a problem here is that roughly 1 out of 10 times, the synchronization is off in the stereo pair and it just sounds bizarre and terrible.

I recently procured an AV receiver that also includes AirPlay 2, so I thought I'd try multi-room audio, something I've already achieved and honed with with 6 Chromecast Audios throughout my home. The first thing I noticed is it seemed to have a lot of trouble actually delivering audio to multiple speakers (jitter, skips, things you're just not used to hearing these days). Once I finally got audio playback going without the skips, I noticed it was out of sync across rooms. No problem, I'll adjust the delay of each speaker, except there's absolutely no way to do that. Unlike the Chromecast Audio, there's no control Apple gives you for adjusting the delay of the various AirPlay 2 speakers. This effectively makes multi-room playback useless in you're having sync issues.

I don't get it. AirPlay 2 was made in the shadow of Chromecast Audio, Sonos, and several other multi-room playback audio solutions.

At this point, I really wish Apple had put a 3.5mm audio input or a toslink input on the HomePod so I could just add it to the existing Chromecast Audio solution that has been working well for years. It's such a bummer.
