Apple TV 4K — all Aerials now 1080p SDR Posted: 08 Jan 2019 09:10 PM PST When we got our Apple TV 4K, it had a limited set of Aerials. A couple months ago, we started seeing basically the complete set of Aerials, but it was clear that new ones weren't 4K or HDR. Recently I realized that ALL of the Aerials looked pretty bad, even the original ones which used to look phenomenal. Finally got around to testing, and the results are clear: the Aerials when playing as a screensaver look identical to the 1080p SDR files (played in VLC). Weirdly oversaturated colors, no brilliant highlights, lots of banding, and little detail. If I load the 4K Dolby Vision version, the colors suddenly look natural, lights on buildings are truly spectacular, banding is gone, and the detail is back. To me, this is pretty compelling evidence that the Apple TV is downloading 1080p SDR versions of the Aerials, but I don't know why or how to fix it. We even tried restoring to factory settings, no dice. Setup info: Apple TV 4K > Receiver (Denon S720W, supports Dolby Vision passthru) > TV (Vizio P75 with Dolby Vision). All HDMI cables are 18Gbps and 60Hz Dolby Vision is set and working as the output. Ethernet cable (not wi-fi) and the Speedtest app shows ~850Mbps down and ~950Mbps up. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there anything we can do? Edit: also tried stripping out the Dolby Vision metadata and remuxing some of the videos to HDR10 in an mp4 container. These play correctly on my OSMC (similar to OpenELEC/LibreELEC) S905D box which I use for HDR10+lossless Atmos/DTS:X content that can't be played on the Apple TV. [link] [comments]

Why does fast-forwarding hardly work, and sometimes restart my video? (DIRECTV NOW) Posted: 08 Jan 2019 04:49 PM PST I watch recordings from my Directv Now DVR (in addition to live Directv Now) on my AppleTV and it happens soooo frequently. Basically I'll try to fast forward (which Jesus Christ is it slow/bad), then more often than not, it'll restart my entire recording. Is this normal? Am I using the remote wrong? Anyone else experience this? My Firestick doesn't do this. [link] [comments]
No Escaping the Spectrum Receiver Charge Posted: 08 Jan 2019 09:46 AM PST I had a few questions about my Spectrum bill, so I took a deep breath and called their customer service line. You never know how those calls are going to go, so I had a bit of trepidation. Anyway, after I got my original questions answered, I decided to ask one more: now that I am using Spectrum's shiny new Apple TV app, which works pretty great, I am not using my Spectrum receiver anymore. Could I return it and save the $7.50 per month charge? The agent said no, the receiver is required with Spectrum TV service. I pushed my point a little further; you mean, I could unplug my receiver and set it on a shelf in my closet, and watch all the Spectrum TV I want via internet and Apple TV, but Spectrum will still charge me for equipment that I don't need and am not using? She said, Yes, I know that sounds weird, but that's how it works. I thanked her for her courteous service and ended the call. Does anyone predict a change to this situation?? [link] [comments]
Apple TV 4K HDR is dull and washed out Posted: 08 Jan 2019 08:10 PM PST I'm thinking about returning my Apple TV b/c I just can't get HDR to look good on it. Using the same tv settings, the picture looks beautiful from my Xbox one x (Vudu 4K hdr streams, 4K Blu-rays, everything). Anything I play on Apple TV however just looks dull. Colors don't pop, hdr feels like it's off even though my tv says otherwise, and overall picture feels flatter. It's been a huge disappointment so far. I've tried changing the Apple TV settings to be at SDR with match dynamic range on but it doesn't work and if I have HDR on at all times, it still doesn't look good. Dolby vision on or off, it still looks dull. Any ideas? I have a Sony x900f and I've checked MANY 4K hdr films just to see the same issue. EDIT: Problem fixed, I really appreciate everybody's great advice. Turns out that I had Quick Start Off and in doing so, I was limiting my video quality to HD without realizing it. Many thanks for pointing that out. It looks great now. [link] [comments]
Spectrum App - Channel Guide Navigation Is Terrible Posted: 08 Jan 2019 06:45 PM PST I just had to scroll from the 700's down to channel 5 in the Spectrum App Guide. I want to know what UI designer thought it would be OK to have to scroll through hundreds and hundreds of channel listings using the 1 1/2 inch space of the remote trackpad. Unbelievable! Why not utilize the + - button to be able to quickly scroll through the channel listings. Or better yet, "Hey Siri play channel 5!" [link] [comments]
Airplay 2 with Sonos Beam audio lag Posted: 09 Jan 2019 01:19 AM PST I'm considering getting a Sonos Beam to use exclusively with an Apple TV 4K via AirPlay 2 as an audio output. Does anyone with this same setup have any feedback on what audio sync is like when playing videos? Is there any lag between the video and audio? [link] [comments]
Can't connect Remote app to Apple TV 4. Stopped working, last 12.1.2 tvOS didn't help Posted: 08 Jan 2019 02:58 PM PST Hello, I've used to control Apple TV from my iPhone. Since last day, I can't do that. Remote app stopped connecting to Apple TV at all. Apple TV is not recognised as AirPlay 2 device anymore, only AirPlay 1 (no circle/tick sign to the right of it in the list of AirPlay devices) I've tried to remove the Apple TV from Remote app in hopes of re-pairing it. No success. Removed my device from Apple TV - same issue. I've upgraded the Apple TV to the last beta to no success as well. Other Apple TV's (3rd gen, 2 of those) work perfectly fine and are recognised in remote app Tested on different iOS device - exact same behavior, the issue lies in Apple TV software 100%. I'm confident that 12.1.2 bricked something Any help? EDIT: Solved by turning off beta updates and doing reset+update EDIT 2: Problem just reappeared. AirPlay video got disconnected, Apple TV position in airplay devices moved to the last position from the top of the list, Remote sees the device as offline [link] [comments]
Looking for Siri/HomePod syntax to control the AppleTV Posted: 08 Jan 2019 11:20 AM PST I'm looking for the voice commands I need to perform to tell the Apple TV to do things. Play and pause would be nice. Stop would be wonderful. I know "Unpause" is disliked and "resume" is preferred. I believe "Hey Siri, resume on the [room name] [ATV name]" occasionally works. I also know that it hates using either room name or "TV" as the name of the Apple TV. [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 Jan 2019 07:25 PM PST I've just started to notice the apple tv has a black screen flicker that makes it unwatchable in 4k. It's fine on 1080p but anything more and it just flickers constantly. The HDMI cord is fairly new and I'm using with a Sony x900f. I've only started noticing the issue in the past couple of days. Will we see a new Apple TV anytime soon? Posted: 08 Jan 2019 12:53 PM PST It would be great if the next Apple TV had a newly designed remote or full Siri integration with hands-free operation. But what other features could be included? The current version already supports HDR and Dolby Vision. Is HDR10+ worth an upgrade? There won't be any real native 8K video content until at least 2020 so I don't see 8K coming to Apple TV prior to that, unless Apple wants to upscale everything just for the heck of it like it does with ATV4K. If 8K functionality were to be included, so would HDMI 2.1 and I'd imagine 10 gigabit ethernet would be as well and maybe 802.11ax. Anything else? An A12 Bionic chip? We could potentially see a stick/dongle, chromecast-like version of Apple TV that has AirPlay functionality, though it's clear Apple would prefer to sell more iOS devices and have folks AirPlay to their TVs. But with AirPlay 2 launching on 3rd party TVs soon, a lot of redditors are wondering how much longer will the Apple TV remain relevant? Apple will likely want AirPlay functionality on as many TVs as possible, which could make the Apple TV (in its current form) unnecessary at some point. Moving forward, I think the TV app will play a much bigger role on iOS than it currently does, especially with AirPlay 2 launching on 3rd party TVs and as Apple prepares to debut their original series later this year. And I'm guessing we'll eventually see the TV app (and 3rd party video apps) expand to macOS. With all of that, I'm gonna answer my own question... I don't think we'll see a new Apple TV for quite a while. [link] [comments]
Having an issue with an old movie, a MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD on Prime video. Posted: 08 Jan 2019 06:52 AM PST It doesn't display the video. The start of the movie plays (pre-movie intros such as the Lion logo play). The actual movie is black, but the audio is there. Tried on more than 1 Apple TV in my house. Anyone else have this issue?
