My girlfriend and I created an app to make random decision making a little more fun.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2021 06:12 AM PST

    Download: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/picks-random-generator/id1536305926

During the past year, we built Picks: a new take on a random generator. She designed the app while I built it using 100% Swift. The app is pretty simple, it's a random generator but it allows you to build decisions similar to the Shortcuts app. There was no clean and easy to use app out there that functioned similarly so we built our own.

Here are some features of Picks

    • Unlimited number of outcomes
    • Built in timer — decide how long you'll do something for
    • Customizable colors to get just the right look
    • Set weights for outcomes
    • iCloud sync between devices

    Some other nice bonuses

    • Available on iOS, iPadOS and MacOS (Apple Silicon)
    • No tracking or ads

We put a lot of thought into Picks and had tons of fun building and using it. We would really appreciate any feedback so we can improve the app as much as possible.

Edit: Thanks for all the support and feedback. We've decreased the price for Picks Pro until Monday!

IAMA musician who worked with Apple on a bunch of their ads and WWDC videos! AMA

    Posted: 07 Feb 2021 08:17 AM PST

    Hi there!

My name is Karl Boltzmann. Apple first used my music for their MacBook Pro Retina worldwide ad campaign back in 2012. Check that out here: https://youtu.be/VvKceXeAU_g

Then I worked with Apple for their video introducing the Apple Pencil and iPad pro at the 2015 WWDC. I just made a video discussing this here: https://youtu.be/JoItFEgn_jw

In 2016 I spent the winter working closely with Apple again on their iPad pro advertisement. Since then we have worked here and there on ads and other things.

I have also worked with Google, Microsoft, Ford and other companies on ad campaigns.

    Other things about me...

I love video games! Mostly competitive games. My current fav is Rocket League, but I've sunk plenty of time into the original Quake and some of the NHL games.

I also love all things space and science and would be happy to talk about anything space/science related.

Follow what I'm up to on Instagram and Twitter and considering subbing to my YouTube channel if you like music talk and song deconstruction!

I will be around this afternoon to answer any questions. There might be some things I can't answer, but I will do my best.

    Cartridge: Manage Games you're Playing

    Posted: 07 Feb 2021 09:43 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

My Video Game Backlog management app, Cartridge hit 1.5 this week!

I posted here almost a year ago when I first released this app. Just last week, I finally hit 1.5 with a bunch of new features like custom game lists, game ratings, and search.

Cartridge is an app that's meant to help you manage and whittle down your gaming backlog. I see it as kind of a todo-list app where you add, manage, and delete games as you finish them. Of course, a lot of users also like to keep the games listed, and that's why I've added things like game ratings and custom lists to help those who want to "collect" within the app.

I thought I'd post here for anybody who hasn't seen this before. The app is FREE with a ONE-TIME IAP to unlock "Premium". As a user and developer, I don't believe every app needs to be a subscription, so I want to be able to offer this subscription-free :).

There are a few things coming in future versions like Stats, UX enhancements, and widgets, but there hasn't been a lot of adoption yet, so I want to share this here :).

Of course, I'm also open to feedback and feature requests, so if anyone has anything they think can be added, let me know.

    Here's the app:

My lockdown project – Retro Games for Mac, iPhone, and iPad – Giveaway included

    Posted: 07 Feb 2021 12:35 PM PST

Last year, a few weeks into the pandemic, my then-employer downsized making a whole bunch of us redundant – leaving me with more time than I knew what to do with. I started a project to remake some of my favourite games from the eighties and nineties, initially for macOS but more recently for iPad and iPhone. Ten months on, the collection has grown to twenty-five titles and I have a few more in various stages of gestation that should be finished before the end of the year.

On desktop machines the games include cheat codes, and I've tried to have fun with them – for example you can type DRFAUCI while playing Fascinating Fruit, ALOHAMORA while playing Space Diamonds, and VONBRAUN while playing ICBMs Inbound.

I'm giving away ten promo codes for Ice Squishing – which I regard as the star of the collection. Those of you who played Ambrosia's Bubble Trouble back in the day will be right at home with the gameplay. I'll send them to ten random commenters before noon tomorrow my time (GMT).

Feedback, comments, and suggestions would be very welcome.

New update for my scientific & engineering calculator app. Giving away 10 promo codes to 10 random commenters.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2021 03:45 AM PST

I've just shipped an update to TechniCalc, which is available on iPhone (with companion Apple Watch app), iPad, and macOS.

The update log is too long to post here! It'd take up more than the size of this post - but in short, it's a tonne of UI stuff and loads of things to improve the Mac experience too. But you can read it in the App Store description!

To celebrate, I'm giving away 10 codes to 10 random commenters. Codes will be given out tomorrow morning (around 9am GMT).

Any feedback, comments, or suggestions is also hugely appreciated!

TechniCalc is a smart calculator for a smart phone. The modern interface that makes a clean break from traditional pocket calculators. Equations are entered in a natural way, adhering to every detail of hand-written maths.

The advanced maths engine also makes this the only calculator you'll ever need. You'll find your garden variety logs, sins, and cosines — but for when you need it, the engine has full support for imaginary numbers, vectors, matrices, sums and products, and differentiation and integration.
