How I got a FREE Screen Replacement on my Mid-2012 Retina 15" Macbook Pro in 2019. Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:03 PM PST Hey everyone. As some of you might know, almost every Macbook Pro Retina from 2012-2014 is out of the 4-Year Replacement date for faulty screens. (Staingate issue.) I went to the Apple Store (or iStore as in my country, NZ) and they told me it would cost about $1506.96 Inc GST + $90.00 Inc GST Labour. (Which is about $1100US) 🤦♂️ No. That's too much. That's absurd. I can't afford another $1500NZ to get the screen replaced. After asking what I should do next, they simply told me that anything outside of that is out of their control, and that I should just contact Apple Support directly if I had any issues with their guidelines... and so.. I did that the very next day.. I first got on phone with a standard support/adviser, and at first they couldn't help me with this issue as well. Before I was even gonna ask to speak with a Senior Advisor, they immediately recommended to me that I should speak with one, and so after waiting for about 15 minutes, they redirected me to an Apple Senior Advisor from the US. Now, mind you I don't live in the US, however knew that if they were going to help me get a free replacement / exception, they would just tell the NZ Apple Support that I can qualify. I explained him my situation, told him that I already brought in my laptop for a quote, and that I'm only 18 years old and that I can't afford $1500 for a screen replacement. (Because I can't.) The friendly Senior Advisor told me that there wasn't much he would do to help me with this situation, however.. he noted that he would give me an exception since I was being so nice to him. He tried directing me to NZ Apple Support on the phone however failed to do so, and so he just sent me a case number and I had to take it from there. This entire phone call alone was about 1 hour and 12 minutes long, but I was being patient. Patience is key. It helps. 😀 Ok, so now I call ealier this morning to Apple Support NZ, and.... I get a response, but from someone in the Philippines... ok? 🤔 Told him my situation and he told me that, I quote: "It will redirect you to a different Apple Support country if your country doesn't pick up the phone.." or at least something like that. He also once again tried getting through to NZ's Apple support... no response. Once again, I was kind of on my own... UNTIL IT FINALLY WORKED. I, once again called the number, and yet again a different country's Apple Support picks up. (US again.) But anyway I, once again, addressed the situation once more, and they, once more, tried redirecting my call, and BLESS! They finally manged it. Turned out that there was an issue with Apple's support system before but I now got hold with a Senior Adviser from NZ. He told me that he can confirm the exception and case number given to me from the US Senior Advisor, but that I would need to wait approximately another 2-3 hours for a call back since he needed to confirm with my local iStore about everything... ...2-3 hours past.... and nothing. Emailed him back and IMMEDIATELY he called back... ...and guess what?.... ...it got confirmed. Bless Apple's support. God bless. Even though this took like, 5 hours for everything to work it self out, I can now guarantee that I'll get a new display for my 6 year old Macbook Pro, FREE from $1500+. If you guys have the same issue as I did, then you guys can go right ahead and try it. Apple's customer support is excellent and I'm surprised that, with just a little work and time, they'll help you. You just gotta find the right people, and be nice. Don't force into being nice though. I wasn't faking on being nice at all. Just be yourself and be honest about the situation, and they'll help you, and personally, I'm honestly impressed. The only thing I'm not impressed at was the fact that they initially tried (the iStore themself) to charge me so much money for a replacement without discussing any further options on fixing it. I had to ask them, if it was possible if I wasn't happy, to talk with someone else. At the end though, I'm still happy. 😊 I'll update you guys with before and after photos, a Apple Care slip, and my system info to prove everything's legit once they completed the repair. 🙏 Thanks for reading this and have a great day! Hope this helps! [link] [comments] |
Late 2012 27" iMac Keeps Shutting Off Randomly Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:21 PM PST So I am having an issue with my 2012 iMac that I have tried tirelessly to solve and I am really hoping that someone on Reddit can save me (as you guys often do). To be brief, I believe that the power supply (PSU) on my iMac is dying and that is what is causing my computer to shut off randomly. To get it to power back on, I have to unplug the device and leave it for 10-15 minutes. I do not really care on fixing the issue, but instead I am really needing to get the data off of the iMac (say to an external hard drive) or transferring the data onto a new mac mini that we purchased to replace the iMac. I have tried to use Migration Assistant, Target Disk Mode, and Time Machine, but unfortunately because of the issue where the iMac will just shut off randomly, it has only made it about 20%-50% through the transfer... It is really frustrating and I have searched and searched for a way around this so I can get this data off the computer. I would appreciate any help and hopefully I am missing something that I can utilize or override in order to get the transfer to complete. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
How do I manage all my bluetooth headphones/speakers? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:37 AM PST Is there an easy way to connect/disconnect my devices without having to constantly go to bluetooth settings in my iphone and macbook? It seems overly complicated to have to disconnect, then connect. Sometimes I forget to disconnect when I close my macbook so then I have to pull it out from my bag, open it, disconnect my headphones, then go to my iphone and go to settings->bluetooth->connect. Is there an easier way to do this? [link] [comments] |
Two questions about the cheese grater Mac pros Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:50 PM PST I'm looking at a 2009-2011 Mac pro for a fun project. Firstly can windows 10 be installed solely on one of these without Mac os on at all? Secondly under windows can one of these run any data SSD drive without complication? [link] [comments] |
Strange Safari behaviour since Mojave Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:20 PM PST Since updating to Mojave, Safari has been annoying my with this odd little quirk that has never been there before… The "previous page" icon is ALWAYS highlighted. This is annoying, in that I have always used " "Press Tab to highlight" feature. I also use the space bar to scroll down each page while I read. But, because the Previous page icon is highlighted, the space bar is invoked, and I end up going back to — wait for it — The previous page! I can click outside of a link to deactivate the highlight, but it will return if I load another page. This happens on both my MacBook and iMac. What is this? Why is this now happening? Does anyone else have this strange issue? Any help would be appreciated, thanks Image: https://my.mixtape.moe/yuvjms.png [link] [comments] |
How to turn off an alarm on the iPhone XS without having to look at the screen? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:08 PM PST I want to keep the snooze option, but need to be able to turn off the alarm on the fly (without looking at the screen.) Back in the "home button" days, I could just hit the home button. But on the XS, all of the side buttons result in snoozing (unless I disable the snooze, but again....trying to keep that option open). What am I missing? [link] [comments] |
Where is my iTunes music library? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:26 PM PST I opened up iTunes for the first time in several months and my music library is completely empty. I no longer have an Apple Music subscription but this is music I bought through iTunes. No idea what to do at this point. [link] [comments] |
I can’t open up any apps related to calling after someone called me and did that FaceTime glitch. Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:58 AM PST I can't open phone, FaceTime or contacts without my phone losing its shit. Cant receive calls for that manner as well, or use Siri to call people. I've reset my phone, reset network preferences, updated it, and nothing's worked. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Loud MacBook Pro (13” 2016) fan when using camera Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:01 PM PST Hi all. I frequently utilise apps video calling apps such as Discord and Skype. Every time I use my camera while calling, the fan on my MacBook Pro 13" 2016 model becomes irritatingly loud. I have nothing else running with the exception of an Internet browser (Chrome) in the background. As soon as I turn my camera off during video calls, the fan noise dies down so I assume the load increases requiring the fan to work harder. Besides dust buildup (which I am investigating and awaiting a screwdriver to clean the fan etc), is there any other reason why the fan noise is loud when using the camera? I purchased this MacBook on clearance at a department store and realised afterward it was used as a display model, potentially picking up dust over time. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
3D touch randomly stopped working Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:48 PM PST so this has happened before but randomly the 3d touch on my X stopped working. no damage, wasn't dropped, was basically sitting on my dining room for a couple hours and when i picked it back up i couldn't use 3D touch at all. this happened before and i restored my iphone as new (didn't work), turned off 3D touch, reset my phone, turned it back on and it still didn't work. but randomly a couple hours it was working again. not sure where to go from here since the warranty has expired and i can't afford to replace / repair the phone out of warranty [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:00 PM PST Hi, so I bought an iPad Pro 2018 11 inch, and when I pulled it out of my binder today it was destroyed. Literally destroyed. I'm looking into buying this case mainly because of the brand and I know otterbox is #1, but I've never had any of their folio cases, only their defender. (Not getting defender because lots of reviews saying touch screen gets defected). My question: https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/product/HMKK2ZM/A/otterbox-symmetry-series-360-case-for-11%E2%80%91inch-ipad-pro?fnode=9a&fs=f%3Dipadpro_11%26fh%3D4583%252B4a96 - is this a defensive case that will not bend and be crushed by my binder? Thank you for reading! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 04:25 PM PST So me and some of my friends wanted to have a Group FaceTime so me and a friend were on a call so I tried to add another friend to it and me and the persons phone that I called had a weird bug. Both of our phones had the screen when your phone dies and the screen turns black and gives you a buffering sign. Our phones stayed like this for about 5-10 minutes and once our phones turned back on we could not call or FaceTime anyone. I need to know if there is an easy fix or if I need to go to a store and get it replaced. Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Macbook `Service Battery` notification appeared today Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:48 PM PST I have a Macbook (Late 2016) that recently started showing the warning for the battery to be serviced. I have a Cycle Count of 562 and according to the website the maximum is 1000. What are my options here? Has anyone ever replaced their battery with Apple? How much did it cost? [link] [comments] |
[iOS] Removed Gmail from Accounts after Mail app said "Cannot Get Mail," can't add Gmail back now? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:20 PM PST Hi all, Earlier today, I was getting an error in the Mail app for my Gmail account saying "Cannot Get Mail", and no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to work again. So, I figured, "Whatever, I'll just remove the account and add it back." Well, then I got an error that says the account is "Already Added". So I waited a bit and tried again, this time adding it manually via the IMAP and SMTP servers under the "Other" option, and got yet another error saying "Gmail is currently unavailable". Now, when I try to add the account by selecting Google, I put in my email, password, and 2-step verification code, and just get bounced back to the "Add Account" page. Does anyone know how to fix this? This is driving me absolutely insane. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Macbook stuck on white screen at boot and now blue. Fixable? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:55 PM PST Lately on boot my Macbook will get stuck on the white screen. I tried all the tips I found online (safe mode, verbose mode, resetting PRAM, recovery, etc.) and that will get it to run here and there but inevitably it gets stuck again. Then the other day it got stuck on a blue screen which was new. My question is does this point to a specific problem and is it fixable or not? I don't want to be pulling my hair out over an issue that is not correctable. [link] [comments] |
Change Bluetooth device from keyboard to controller Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:45 PM PST I have a bluetooth controller that "thinks" it is a keyboard on my Mac, but I want it to act as a controller. I'm trying to button map the device, but it won't let me do it when it is in the keyboard state... Any idea how I could convert it? Any recommended programs? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:50 AM PST Hi, I'm currently using a 2015 MBP i7 and noticed today that when I was on a conference call using UberConference my CPU Frequency was throttled to 1GHZ and everything because extremely sluggish (https://imgur.com/a/lE49X7q). A few seconds after the conference had finished, the frequency went back to normal. Anyone have any theories to why this is happening? I am using my MBP in clamshell mode because I am using HengeDock so temperatures may be a little higher than expected although I don't expect that to be the culprit of the issue as the CPU frequency is now running normally at the same temperature. Also I am using 2x DP monitors which I believe can be more taxing on CPU. Appreciate any help or suggestion. [link] [comments] |
2008 Mac Pro, starts up with boot chime, no display Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:32 PM PST I'm working on a 2008 Mac Pro for someone and while it starts up, there's a boot chime but nothing is on the display. I tried the same cable and screen with my identical 2008 Mac Pro and it works perfectly fine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. 2008 Mac Pro • 2x 2.8ghz Xeon E5462 • AMD card with flames on it. Computer dunce here - MacBook Pro can’t find system software? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:45 AM PST Just a quick disclaimer, I'm not super great with computers so please be kind! You might need to ELI5 :) I bought my second Apple laptop in January 2013, it's a MacBook Pro. When I checked under "About This Mac" it said its a mid-2012 model. I was reading an article on my laptop Sunday night, everything working properly. I walked away for a few minutes and when I came back, the screen was blank except for an icon of a folder with a question mark flashing on the screen. I googled the issue, read this article, followed the instructions... no avail. The start up disk isn't listed under Utilities. I tried reinstalling OSX but it wouldn't work. I called Apple Support and they walked me through a few other possible solutions but no luck. I made an appointment for this evening to have it looked at but I wanted to check in with Reddit to see if anyone else is familiar with this issue...? The only silver lining is I'd backed up my data a few weeks ago so I shouldn't hardly any info. If anyone is familiar with the problem, has any suggestions, or can simply tell me if it's fixable (and/or what an approximate cost would run me for repair), I'd be super appreciative. I'm a grad student who needs a computer for school work, which also means I have no income and I'm trying to anticipate what a repair would cost, or if I straight up need to consider buying a new laptop. Thanks in advance for all your help! EDIT: THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!! Took the laptop to Simply Mac (closest Apple store is 1+ away so Simply Mac was my only option) and they diagnosed the cable drive as the culprit. Simply Mac said they'd fix it for $160 but thanks to you kind folks, I opted to buy a new cable drive from the Beetstech link referenced. Hopefully I'll have the issue resolved by the end of the week!! Thanks again fam. I really appreciate your responses and advice! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 01:30 PM PST I just recently picked up a new Pioneer headunit for my car (DEH-X8800BHS) and I'm having an issue with low volume over bluetooth during phone calls on my iPhone 7+ (9,2 with Qualcomm modem). When I connect a different iPhone 7+ (9,4 with Intel modem), and an iPhone 5, call volume seems to be normal. I've been emailing with Pioneer technical support and they released a firmware last September that apparently fixed an issue with "some devices" having low in-call volume. I've done everything they've suggested, and I have a feeling the issue is that their recently released firmware didn't completely fix the issue. If the 9,4 uses a different bluetooth chip than my 9,2, I could forward that information to them and maybe they could investigate further. If they're using the same chip, it's possible that it's just my phone (but that seems unlikely since bluetooth works very well on this phone with every other device I own). Anyone know if they use the same or different bluetooth chips? [link] [comments] |
