Planning to upgrade mid-2012 MacBook Pro to M1 but am confused between Air and Pro

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 04:59 PM PDT

I am planning to upgrade mid-2012 MacBook Pro (non retina) to M1 but am confused between Macbook Air and Pro.

I actually bought my MacBook in Dec 2016 and upgraded HDD to SSD and Ram. However, now the processor is showing its age, and the battery is quite bad as well.

I don't do very heavy tasks but do run multiple apps sometimes (Mostly light apps).
I sometimes work outdoors, which has been extremely difficult to do with the current MacBook as I couldn't really see much on the screen. I am not sure of the brightness of my model (as per the internet is either 300not or 350nits). Considering the Macbook Pro has a screen brightness of 500 nits vs 400 nits on Macbook Air, do you think I should buy the Pro model, or Air too works fine Outdoors?

Any suggestions shall be highly appreciated.

Usb c to sata III adapter

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 09:41 PM PDT

    Hi guyz,

Just got my air M1, frist experience with MacOs.

So i got an ssd with sata III connection on it and really wonder wether i can get cable to connect it to my m1.

I have seen some of the adapters online but just not sure wether they work as they should.

If anyone has an experience on it, let me know please. I am ready to get the hub if it has the sata III connection on it.

There are new reports that the much-feared read-write issues on M1 SSDs were a data error, and that they aren't any more susceptible to wear than other SSDs. So does this mean that 8GB MBPs might be good enough?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 03:32 PM PDT

I'm really, really impressed by the way Macs with the T2 chip work with minimum RAM. The swap on my friend's base M1 MBA is impressive enough that he runs Premiere to edit hours-long video without any notable lag. The rendering times are even fast.

I'm buying a new MacBook later this year and have been pricing with 16GB because I kept hearing about how the swap issues with the built-in SSDs would wear them down in no time. Now that doesn't seem to be the case, at least no more than swap would have to happen anyway.

So my question is: Can one get away with a base MBP now without pumping up to 16GB? Is the problem in the article the problem that people were talking about, or were they talking about the fact that swap inherently wears down any SSD, no matter which laptop it's in?

2019 Macbook Pro vs M1 Macbook Air

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 06:37 PM PDT

I'm going into post-grad this fall and I'm wanting to upgrade to the new M1 Macbooks. I don't really know if it's worth it, but the longer lasting battery life appealed to me. I only use the laptop for school use (browsing, watching lectures, etc.). Is it worth the upgrade?

Should I wait for the M1X 14 inch Macbook Pro?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 04:42 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm an incoming college freshman majoring in computer science and do not currently have a laptop. I had one that started to go bad a couple months ago which did not really effect my highschool work because it was towards the end of the year and they gave us school computers anyways. Now that college is starting and I am done with highschool I'm going to need my own laptop especially for the major im pursuing, a computer will most likely be pretty important. 😂 I have a cheap desktop at home that I think I'll be able to use for homework and some assignments early in the year since as I don't think my professors will assign anything too computationally intensive in the first few weeks. With the 14 inch not out yet but rumours of it coming out soon do you guys think it would be wise to wait for the 14 inch with all of the ports or settle with the current gen air/pro. I'm honestly not really looking forward to the 14 inch for it's performance as I heard the m1 is plenty for most tasks including software development and programming, but the lack of ports on the current gen and especially on the air is a big turn off. I also know that the 14 inch is probably going to be more expensive than the current 13 inch pros so that's something to consider even though my budget is pretty big as this is an investment and I'll be using this laptop for a while. Anyways with all of this said would you guys opt for the current gen or risk it and wait for the new model, please let me know and thanks for reading all of this!

    Macbook Air damaged screen

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 04:21 PM PDT

I have a macbook air that somehow got a damage screen. Can't see anything but a white screen with vertical lines going through it. To get around that, I first bought an adapter to plug into a monitor. From there, I turned on Sharing so that I can just VNC into the Mac. I just noticed today that the cat chewed on the charger and that the Mac was dead. I was able to get it charged and powered on again, but now I can't VNC into it anymore. I connected the adapter to a monitor, and on the 2nd screen (which doesn't come on until several seconds after it boots) has a gray background. I can move the mouse into the screen, but I can't seem to make it go into mirror mode. I'm thinking the Mac is in recovery mode for some reason. How do I get around this without repairing the Mac?

    Question

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 01:52 PM PDT

Hi I'm new to this reddit. I hope I'm allowed to ask this question here and that you can help me. I'm at a hotel right now and my phone doesn't connect to the wifi but my macbook does.

Is it possible that my macbook can be used as a router while its connected with wifi? I know it's possible when using a ethernet cable but in the hotel I only have wifi.

Hi everyone, there is a few weeks ago I saw a black point on my macbook screen, I bought it in October 2020 so it's really annoying if it's already a trouble. What should I do? Should I go to the store directly? There is a picture of the black point. Thanks

Buy Macbook Air M1 now or wait for 2021 model?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 08:39 AM PDT

I can get the M1 for a pretty decent price from the apple refurbished store. Should I go for it or is it going to drop significantly in price when the 2021 model comes out later this year/ is the new macbook air expected to be cheaper than the 2020 one?
