PSA: The iPad’s keyboard gestures are more robust than you might think

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 03:05 PM PST

The iPad actually has quite a few options for text selection that I don't always see mentioned here, including a few that I don't think even 3D Touch iPhones have. There's the obvious one:

    • Swipe with two fingers to move cursor.

    But there's also

    • Tap and hold with two fingers to begin selecting, then move fingers to expand selection, OR

    • Tap once with two fingers to select single word.

    • Double tap with two fingers to select sentence.

    • Triple tap with two fingers to select paragraph.

    While text is selected:

    • Swipe left/up with two fingers to move left selection handle.

    • Swipe right/down with two fingers to move right selection handle.

    • Tap once with two fingers to exit selection and return to cursor mode.

The cursor position will return to either:

    • The beginning of the previous selection, if you adjusted the handles to make your selection, OR

    • The spot of the previous cursor, before you entered selection mode, if you selected text using the single/double/triple tap to select option and did not adjust the size of the selection.

I hope these are useful for some of you!

Apple should use FaceID to stop rotation when laying down.

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 01:46 AM PST

I love using my phone in bed, so my rotation is usually locked so it doesn't change to landscape on everything. It would be good if iOS could see which way you're viewing your screen from so it stoped rotating if you're laying down. Not a big deal but a good quality of life fix.

We need a dark mode for Apple Music

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 08:34 AM PST

I'm with the rest of you when you say we need a dark mode for messages but I really want a dark mode for Apple Music. Having had amazon music and spotify before, you would think Apple would make thus possible. I mean even YouTube has a dark mode now.

What do you think? If this is true, it seems like Apple is moving to a 3-year redesign cycle.

macOS's built-in feature for waking up if device with same iCloud account approaches

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 12:27 PM PST

You can activate a setting which automatically wakes your Mac from sleeping if a device using the same iCloud account as the Mac approaches. I just discovered this browsing the man-page of pmset:

proximitywake - On supported systems, this option controls system wake from sleep based on proximity of devices using same iCloud id. (value = 0/1)

I don't know if this is a known feature and wether it's on by default but I think it can be quite useful. I also didn't find a way to change this setting using the GUI so it seems like you can only change it with this Terminal command:

    sudo pmset -a proximitywake 1

Instead of trying to type your password into your Apple TV you should be able to use your FaceID on your iPhone.

I picked up the Apple clear case for the iPhone XR, it cracked upon putting it on

Clearly a case designed with form over function in mind. What a waste, no wonder it was delayed. Stick to the $10 case. Immediately turned around and returned it back to Apple.

My iPad, Mac, Nintendo Switch, and wireless charging pad all use USB-C. I never thought the day would come where one cable is all I need for all my tech...gotta give Apple props on this one.

In what ways could Apple improve the home screen design with iOS 13?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 10:11 AM PST

So I did it again--there's over 2,500 apps & movies on sale for Christmas and the holidays, so I curated a list of just the best! Enjoy!

We've come so far in terms of displays, cameras, software and processing power. Batteries however, haven't really changed...

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 04:19 PM PST

The design for a rechargeable lithium ion battery was invented at some point in the 1970/1980s, and as much as we squeeze as much performance out of them as possible, it seems little to no advancements have been made in recent history.

Imagine Apple unveiling a new iPhone, with a new, fancy battery that charges faster, is smaller, lasts longer and is overall safer compared to lithium ion (and it probably better for the environment).

Do you guys have any thoughts to why the battery industry seems to move so slowly, or why we still use the same sort of battery in the iPhone XS as we did in the iPhone 2G?

Had AirPods since launch, now my L bud dies every few minutes

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 11:41 AM PST

I've had my AirPods since launch and I do use them quite a lot, and I know the batteries are probably not at their peak. However, the L and R buds are acting very differently. T

The case charges both to 100%, and then when I put them in all is good for 10-15 mins. Then the music will pause and the L one will stop showing as connected, and I have to put it in the case for about 3 seconds, and then if I put it back in it says something like 96% battery and the music comes back on. This will now continue to happen every 1 - 5 minutes, only with the L AirPod.

I've tried holding the reset button on the back and reconnecting them but it didn't help. Does anyone have any suggestions? They don't get wet, and they're clean. Thanks!

Edit: Small update, I think I have worked out what's making the issue worse. When I go outside, its pretty cold and that usually negatively impacts the batteries and it seems to be pushing my Left AirPod over the line of being usable, if I use it at my Mac they're alright or indoors on my iPhone, but outside on my iPhone and the L one dies all the time.

2016 MacBook Pro keyboard replacement experience

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 01:18 PM PST

The C key on my 2016 15" MBP was working intermittently so I took it into the Apple Store to take advantage of their replacement program for 2016/2017 MacBooks. Dropped it off Tuesday and was told it would be a week or two since the repairs are not done in store; I got a call Friday morning that my laptop was ready for pickup. The whole topcase, battery included was replaced with the 2017 version which now has symbols above the control and option keys and the keys seem to be a bit quieter. My laptop now looks brand new and my battery seems to last longer now as the old one already had 500 cycles. Highly recommend anyone with any sort of keyboard issues to take advantage of this program!

Is a Macbook Pro still worth it these days for illustrators/designers?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 09:59 PM PST

    Hey guys!

So my Mid2012 Macbook pro is now on repair and if in case I need to buy a new one, I am still considering getting the MBP. The prices are still really high and I just learned that they removed all the USB ports that I need to use to connect my Wacom tablet and external hard drives. I really want to continue using Mac but the prices are just way too much and given that USB ports are no longer, im having some second thoughts. Is a 256GB MBP still ok too?

I use my iPad pro a lot too, so thats why getting the MBP would be ideal to transfer files easily. For my macbook, I do a lot of illustrations in Adobe Illustrator with frequent use of a screenrecorder to record my workflows. And I am also learning 3D (Blender) and do a lot of language learning too.

Any thoughts? Or should I consider getting other brands?

    Thanks guys!

    Did Siri have a stroke?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 04:12 PM PST

Hey all, I've noticed in the last couple days that Siri on CarPlay has gotten really strange. I use the Australian male voice, and Siri has started having really strange cadence slips and legs in between words. Anybody know what's going on?

Base model MacBook Pro (2018) with an 560x GPU? That’s seems all you need for video editing of any kind. You guys agree?
