Hello, I've had my MacBook just a week today now and it will no longer charge. I've tried to SMC reset and it was not fruitful. Anyone other advice? Only 50% battery left on it now.

    Updating on Mojave Patch

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 11:42 PM PST

Is it possible to get regular updates on a patched Mac OS Mojave install on my late-2011 MBP? Do updates brick the OS and is there a workaround?

2018 Air vs 2017 Base Pro!

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 08:26 PM PST

Ok hear me out, need some advice from Mac master race. I'm going to be upgrading from a Late 2013 Pro which has been the best thing anyone can ask for the past 5 years but I like change and I'll be gifting this to my sister. I am a Youtuber(Pro) and Student(Air) which is why I'm so conflicted. I'm not a hardcore 4k video editor tho. Here's what I'll be using the MacBook for: school work, watching YouTube, light editing 1080p black ops, gta videos( just a lil bit of deleting, adding and some small effects.) that is all however I heard a rumour apple will discontinue the base pro and heard another rumour that apple is making the air small speced so the one they drop next seems godly. I know rumours are rumours but let's be honest apple is starting to become scam artists so I don't know whether to wait to find out but I also need a laptop bad like fast. I did buy the 2017 base pro last month but ended up returning it due to it getting way too hot and it was making some weird pop sounds. I heard the technical difference between air and pro performance is 10% but since the pro throttles so early and the air keeps cooler it's actually better performance in the long run? Can anyone verify that. The only reason I want a pro is because of that display with wide colour gamut omg it is so beautiful and I haven't been able to or will be able to check the air display is it as bad as they say? Please help y'all.

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro when I close the lid the fan starts going really loud. It means that the battery drains really fast when the mac should be sleeping.

    MacBook querie

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 10:57 AM PST

Recently started recording clips in 4K with my new GoPro hero 7 Black but found my old MacBook Pro 2012 (paid for a lot of upgrades in ram, ssd) couldn't play 4K and is starting to to burn out due to age.

Started to read up that only 2015 and upwards MacBooks can playback/edit 4K?

Anyways, can anyone give me feedback on this MacBook linked below and whether it would be suitable for running photog/video editing software (photoshop, lightroom, Premier pro)

    https://www.johnlewis.com/2017-apple-macbook-12-inch-intel-core-m3-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-intel-hd-graphics-615/p3913150?s_afcid=af_76941&tmad=c&awc=1203_1545504795_3aafc3fad7da920b57e7b4cc2ab7c066&tmcampid=48

(I understand I could custom build a pc for cheaper etc however just wanting to stay with Apple haha)

Best used (older) MacBook Pro to replace mid-2012 Retina? OR just replace battery?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 11:23 AM PST

I am frugal cheap and buy used computers that are old enough to be a good deal but good enough to last at least 3-4 years without feeling ancient. My Mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro Retina is giving me a legitimate "service battery" alert (not just a calibration issue).

First question: spend $200 on a new battery and keep mine, or buy a 2014-2015 15" MacBook Pro? My price range is under $1000, so that rules out a 2016. Plus, I really don't like the loud clickety clack of the new keyboards (and I use mine in a dusty area, so the older style keyboard is probably better)

Second question: If I do buy a replacement Macbook, which ones released in 2014-2015 have significant improvements over their predecessors re: processors, video cards, drive performance, etc.?

    Main differences I see are:

Processors/cache: Ivy bridge (mine) vs. Broadwell/Crystalwell (late 2013 and mid 2014) vs. Haswell/Crystalwell (mid 2015)

GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 650M (mine) vs. Nvidia GeForce GT 750M (late 2013 and mid 2014) vs. AMD Radeon R9 M370X (mid-2015)

Specs on my current 15" mid-2012 MacBook Pro Retina:

16 GB RAM, i7 processor, and a 250GB SSD (which I swore I would never use for storing any data or media, but now it is almost full...).

My usage (beyond the usual) includes: recreational Photoshop editing, streaming HD videos, and occasional video editing/compressing with Adobe CC-- fairly simple stuff (not multicam or elaborate multi-track graphics). Editing sometimes includes running client software for a network attached storage RAID system (EditShare) but I don't think that is very resource intensive.

Thanks for any suggestions, opinions and knowledge. Researching older Macbooks is a PITA.

What is best linux for Macbook 2016? Ubuntu is not working well

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 01:59 AM PST

The title summarizes it, can anyone recommend me best distro? I have ubuntu but it doesn't sleep well (uses all battery and heats up tremendously). Turning it off is also quite problematic.

Is it worth buying a new MacBook or should I refurbish my old one?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 08:45 AM PST

Hi, I currently have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro

    • 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    • 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory
    • NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1 GB. Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB
    • 15.4-inch (2880 x 1800) retina
    • 256Gb SSD
    • Has USB-A ports ! Two thunderbolt ports. HDMI port. Headphone jack. SDXC card slot.

I use it frequently every day. I use it for pretty much everything, the hardest use was when I was doing CAD at college using AutoCad (it would only bog down if you were doing something wrong like drawing an entire football stadium in 1:1 scale then try zoom in and out and pan around), but Ive now finished college.

The performance had a bit of a wobble a while back but now its acting stable again. The case is battered, somehow theres a dent around the MagSafe socket. Theres a bit of water damage inside the screen. The right hand USB port has stopped working but the left still works fine.

I did consider buying another. But what happened to the prices ?! The new MacBooks seem less affordable. And if I did buy a new MacBook I wouldnt want a step back in specification, I do like the screen size.

My question is, is it worth buying a new one? Is there much of a difference or leap in specification to justify it. Or would it be more cost effective to repair mine, replace the screen and maybe the battery ?

    Retina micro scratches

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 05:16 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

After intensive research on how to clean my MacBook pro retina, I finally decided to just clean with distilled water and microfiber a towel (just a little bit wet and smoothly) all around the aluminum, trackpad, keyboard and screen and everything ended up perfect (so recommended for those who hesitate on how to clean). I was really tempted on trying isopropyl alcohol yet there was quite a bit controversy if long-term use could affect on aluminum itself. On the other hand I read about that product "eating" the coating of the screen, so afraid of that I just used water. After intensive cleaning I found out little scratches everywhere, which looks like people saying is mostly about dust trapped in between keyboard and screen while moving the laptop (is a laptop so the main purpose isn't it?), other people suggested countermeasures like placing one of those microfiber towels in between or other products yet looks like this can be dangerous for laptop itself.

So far, I'm linking the photo of my screen, and I would like to ask if any of you have/had this and solved somehow, if you are using any kind of screen protector or if I can do something in order to fix or avoid future troubles related with screen.

    Thanks in advance.
