PSA: Do not sit your new iPad Pro on top of your MacBook

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 06:43 PM PST

I unhooked my 2018 15" MacBook Pro from my Thunderbolt Display earlier and sat my new 12.9" iPad Pro on top of it so I could carry them into another room and I heard the fan inside the MacBook making a scraping noise.

The magnets inside the iPad were pulling on it causing the blades to hit the fan housing. I moved the iPad away and it stopped making the noise immediately.

I don't think I have a bad fan as I purchased this MacBook 2 days ago.

So you may want to think twice about putting these two guys very close together in a bag or when walking around or you may end up with a bad fan (especially if you just closed the lid as the fan will continue running until the MacBook has cooled off sufficiently.)

EDIT: This probably isn't an issue for The 12" MacBook as it is fanless.

EDIT2: Since this is getting a bit of attention I'd like to point out the MacBook was actually on top of the iPad now that I'm thinking back vs under the iPad. The keyboard folio was attached to the iPad at the time as well. I was just carrying them stacked together like 2 books.

    Can't post straight YouTube links.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1e_voQvHYk

Watching it now, will give the TL;DR version shortly.

"Easily the best iPad ever, but with iOS 12, still nowhere close to replacing my MacBook."

"One of the best screens I've ever seen."

"iOS 12 is the best version of iOS, but on this it leaves a lot to be desired."

TIL Apple still has iPad mini 2 refurbs available. It's over five years old and has the same processor as the iPhone 5s. The maxed out model is currently $419.

The iPhone 6S and SE really stand out in terms of performance compared to their predecessors.

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 09:04 AM PST

I feel like the iPhone 6S and SE set a precedent in terms of performance and optimisation of iOS devices. I had an iPhone 6 Plus and the performance was terrible from day one. A family member eventually bought a 6S and I bought an SE and I felt that those phones definitely showed that Apple had changed their aims for long term optimisation and performance. Anyone else notice this? Even now on iOS 12 my iPhone SE feels exactly the same as when I first bought it and that's crazy to think about.

I figured out a way to permanently hide the annoying popups to "View BLAHBLAH in the official app" on Safari

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 04:22 PM PST

Before/After Screenshot of what I am talking about:

    https://i.imgur.com/aLNKvBF.png

It also hides google AMP banners for reddit as shown here:

    Before: https://www.dropbox.com/s/du8hz9tch93ttyl/Photo%202018-11-14%2C%2011%2038%2018%20PM.png?dl=0

    After: https://www.dropbox.com/s/nwd4ksm5n32sl0t/Photo%202018-11-14%2C%2011%2037%2043%20PM.png?dl=0

I was extremely annoyed by these popups taking over half my screen and not accepting "No" as an answer. This also lets me hide the other "Open Reddit App" and "Use App" buttons as I don't use the official reddit app anyway so they were pointless.

    Steps:

    1. Use any free content blocker app available on store. I used AdGuard. The free version pretty much lets me do everything I need.
    2. In your content blocker app of choice, enter rules to hide the following classes:

.dualpartinterstitial (this is for the bottom huge banner)

.topbutton (This is for the "Use App" button at top)

.xpromopill (This is for the "Open Reddit App" button at the bottom)

      .upsell_banner (For Google AMP Pages)

    3. So for AdGuard, launch the app, go to "User Filter" and enter the following:

      reddit.com##.dualpartinterstitial,.topbutton,.xpromopill

      ##.upsell_banner

NOTE: the .upsell_banner is used for when Reddit opens via Google AMP and since it's coming from Google's domain and not Reddit's, .upsell_banner needs to be in a separate line.

    Here's a screenshot of it all: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lwziud9dbjjdxr0/Photo%202018-11-14%2C%2011%2037%2034%20PM.png?dl=0

    1. Tap Done and it will take a few seconds to take effect.
    2. Completely quit Safari from the app switcher.
    3. Now whenever you visit reddit on safari, those would be permanently hidden!

NOTE: You can hide other UI elements on other websites this way too. However one thing I figured out while testing this was a bug (not sure if a reddit bug or AdGuard bug) is that the class names need to be entered all lower cased for it to work.

PSA: Apple's Holiday Return Policy Now in Effect

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 08:56 AM PST

Can't get over the new iPhone's price tag? The 8 and 7 series are still incredibly good phones that holds up very well but much cheaper.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2018 12:04 AM PST

Got an iPhone 8 Plus 256 Gb which is still cheaper than the standard X at 64 gb.

Can't say I can be happier about this decision. I play games and watch shows a lot, the storage is much more than I will be needing (and I'm downloading a LOT of offline shows). It can also run the most hardware demanding games on Phones-Aka all those high detailed 3D games with extremely smooth framerate with no lags whatsoever.

You really can't go wrong with the 8, unless you really wanted Face ID or the better camera / CPU performance.

    Reading Mode is absolutely amazing

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 11:13 AM PST

I just want to give some sweet nasty love to Safari's reading mode. On mobile and on desktop, it's just great. It takes poorly formatted articles and Wikipedia entries and spruces them up to be a pleasure to read. I was really surprised and disappointed to find chrome and Firefox can't do this out of the box. They both require an outside service you have to log in to. I understand you have to do that to get similar functionality to Safari's "reading list", but should I really need to sign up for another account just to transform the text on the page to a more readable format? Silly. I'm sure they have extensions, but I got bored of looking for good extensions and went back to Safari.

Edit: It looks like maybe Firefox does support this out of the box? I tried maybe a month ago and could only find Pocket, not a built-in reader view. Granted, I was on Ubuntu, so maybe that feature wasn't available? Anywho, I love built-in reader view. Awesome feature.

More apparent for apps that reside on the dock. UI physics is so interesting.

PSA: New MacBook Airs only 1099 ...

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 11:49 AM PST

The number 1 complaint for the new MacBook airs has been the price.

Well b&h photo is selling them for 1099. If you don't live in New York State you also don't pay for sales tax. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1441820-REG/apple_mree2ll_a_13_3_macbook_air_with.html

    Potentially $100-$200 savings.

What do you all think of Apple creating a rating system for how well apps take advantage of OS feature support, like split view mode or offering multiple app icons, and making that visible in their app listing in the Apps Store?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 03:58 PM PST

I'm envisioning a 1-100 score that color-codes from red to green to incentivize devs to use the features that Apple provides. E.g., I love Flipboard but they STILL don't offer split view and it pisses me off. It would have to be a scale that takes off more for not supporting split view, the files app, and the latest iPhone screen size, than for not offering alternate app icons; not allowing iOS video pushing to the Apple TV while the iPhone/iPad screen is off would fall somewhere in the middle.

Apple Watch + Macbook Touch Bar Both Deserve Night Shift

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 06:43 AM PST

    Title says it all.

All the code already exists: we've seen this on the iPhone, iPad and Macbook range. Adding it to the remainder of the Apple ecosystem wouldn't be too difficult, and has some pretty obvious benefits: 1. Improves user experience: there is both scientific research and observational evidence that suggests that reducing the white point of digital displays before bed can improve sleep quality. Given that customers are likely to use both their Apple Watch and Macbook Pro Touch Bars at night, it makes logical sense to extend Night Shift to them. Yes, these screens are small - but once your eyes have adapted to a warmer colour temperature, even a small amount of bright blue light can be uncomfortable. 2. Increases cohesiveness amongst products in the ecosystem: people are often using their Macbook, iPhone and Apple Watch at night. It's not very Apple-like for these devices to all have different white points. The fact that a customer's Apple products can all interact so seamlessly is a huge selling point for a lot of people.

From an implementation perspective, there is no reason that the Apple Watch could not implement this functionality. Furthermore, the Touch Bar already works with True Tone, which would suggest there is no technical limitation/s that prevents a warmer white point being implemented on this display, too. Night Shift obviously can't work on the Macbook Pro's illuminated keyboard, because it only contains white LEDs (but at least we can turn these completely off and still use the device).

If you'd like to see Night Shift added to Apple Watch and the Touch Bar, please post here. Apple listen to our feedback and I'm sure that this suggestion would actually be pretty simple for them to implement.

iPhone XR Battery- Here’s the data!

    Posted: 14 Nov 2018 09:47 PM PST

Okay, there are plenty of posts already that praise how good the XR's battery is. Here's the image that backs the claim up with the data.

I've been consistently hitting 6 hours of usage but not been able to exhaust the battery beyond 75% even a single day for the past 10 days.

The battery life in XR is truly legendary!
