Posted: 27 Dec 2018 06:11 PM PST Hey all, I'm currently a student looking to upgrade my current MacBook. I torn between the MacBook air or the pro. I plan on using it mainly for writing, watching videos, school work, light video editing and slight gaming (games like minecraft, or undertale). Which would be the better option? Thanks in advance! Should I delay replacing my recalled MacBook Pro battery Posted: 27 Dec 2018 11:39 AM PST I got an email from Apple earlier this month saying that my 2017 MacBook Pro battery was being recalled and needed to have a free replacement. They will replace it within 3 years of the first purchase date of the computer. I am in the process of buying an external HD to backup everything, but I am thinking that even after I do the full backup, I should wait a little bit longer to get the battery replaced. My reasoning is that it will give me a longer usage life for my MacBook since the battery is often the thing that needs to be replaced in laptops. As long as I have a full backup, there is nothing wrong with riding out the life of my current battery a little bit longer. Even if it fails, I will have a backup and will still be eligible for the free battery replacement. And then, I will have a fresh new battery. What do you think? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Question: Sharing internet connection from a MacBook Pro via Ethernet Posted: 27 Dec 2018 10:25 PM PST Right now I'm sharing my iMac's wireless internet connection to another device (a PS4, which gets abysmal wi-fi speeds) via Ethernet, like so. The Mac is 8 years old and getting slow, so I want to replace it with a new MacBook Pro. But those don't have Ethernet ports, just Thunderbolt. Apple sells a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter. So my question is: Can I share a MBP's wi-fi connection via an Ethernet cable connected to a Thunderbolt adapter? [link] [comments]

B&H is has some good deals right now - thoughts on '18 MBP w. Touchbar vs. '18 MBA w. upgrades? Posted: 27 Dec 2018 06:53 PM PST I'm currently torn between the base 2018 Pro with Touch Bar (256 gb standard, better display, quad-core, etc.) vs. the 2018 Air with the upgrades to 256gb SSD and 16gb RAM. The Pro comes in at $200 more than the Air... any thoughts on which would be a better buy in the long term? I will use it for general work-related business, plus music production. Thanks! $1399 MBA with 16gb ram or $1499 MBP TB 8gb Ram - help with decision Posted: 27 Dec 2018 05:08 PM PST Which would you prefer for light to medium work? Does the MBP with TB run hot and have poor battery performance? [link] [comments]
Late 2013 i7 Quad MBP Hitting 65-70C when at 75% idle... time for new thermal paste? Posted: 27 Dec 2018 03:16 PM PST It gets 95C+ when I max it out, is this normal? The fans are running normally (not audible) and I cleaned out the inside with compressed air. I know laptops generally get hotter than desktops, but I'd expect a comparable desktop chip to be 30-40C with that low of a load. 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 8GB RAM [link] [comments]
Is the Touchbar distracting for full-screen writing? Posted: 27 Dec 2018 02:32 PM PST Hi, I'm a writer, and I like to write using Ulysses (a minimal, markdown word processor) in full-screen dark mode. In other words, white text on a dark gray background with no distractions. I'm wondering, if I'm working in a low-light environment, will the touchbar be an eyesore? I just bought the 2017 non-touchbar model, not realizing that the touchbar model has some improvements, such as the keyboard and True Tone. So, I'm debating switching. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Macbook Air wont recognize external HDD Posted: 27 Dec 2018 02:24 PM PST Hello guys, My macbook Air (2015, OS X Yosemite) won't recognize my LACIE partitioned external hard drive (it is partitioned half NTFS and half HFS+ or exFAT I can't remember). All of my important stuff is on the NTFS part as I used to have a Windows computer and I want to be able to access it on the Macbook Air. I have been able to access it on the MBA a few times (even copy pasted some stuff from the HD onto the MBA) a month or two ago, and sometimes it would disconnect accidentally if I slightly moved the computer, but now it just WON'T recognize it. What I tried:
What do I do??? This is driving me insane. Thanks for your help :) [link] [comments]
Upgrading storage on my macbook? Posted: 27 Dec 2018 12:41 PM PST I'm constantly having to delete files or transfer them to my external hard drive cause I don't have enough storage on my macbook. I have a macbook with the following specs:
I'm looking into what SD cards might fit in the slot (not sure which one yet), but I'm also looking into actually replacing the SSD (if possible). Would I need to go to Apple for that? Or would the risk of sending it somewhere else be too high? Any suggestions, appreciated! [link] [comments]
What should I buy? Touch ID MBA or MBP? Posted: 27 Dec 2018 11:59 AM PST Hey everyone, this will be my first mac and I'm really in doubt about which one to go for, I'll be using it mostly for study/netflix/web browsing and maybe some photo/video editing. Should I go for the new touch id MBA or the base model MBP? I live in Japan, so the MBA is around USD1220 and the MBP around USD1300, also, I plan on moving to Ireland in 2019, is it cheaper there? Or should I buy it here? And if I buy AppleCare I can use it anywhere worldwide right? Thank you! Edit: here are both specs, it might be weird as I used the browser translation to translate from Japanese: https://imgur.com/a/n0FSwHU [link] [comments]

How to stop your Mac from combining apostrophes/accents with letters? Posted: 27 Dec 2018 11:32 AM PST The problem is that when I type apostrophe, whenever I type some vowel right after it without pressing a backspace after typing the apostrophe, it will show the input like ä instead of "a. Is there any chance of turning it off? [link] [comments]
Running Macbook Pro 2017 15" off 20000mah battery pack Posted: 27 Dec 2018 04:44 AM PST I'm amazed at why they only include a 7000mah battery on the macbook, it has a shorter battery life than my 2013 macbook air. I've just plugged in a 20000mah battery back and it's charging the laptop via usb (to be more exact just keeping the power level stationery). If we're not doing much intensive work, why can't we constantly have the battery pack plugged in, any downsides? (bulk obviously but I would rather burn the battery pack out than the laptop) [link] [comments]
New to Macs, and Apple in general (My Experience) Posted: 27 Dec 2018 04:19 AM PST SUMMARY: I very much enjoy Mac Hey Guys! I purchased my first Mac computer yesterday and so far my experience has been amazing. I am absolutely in love with apple's integration with features such as iMessage, and being able to pick up calls on your phone with Handoff! Apple's tech support is a breeze (my iCloud account was blocked from logging in to iMessage and FaceTime, and this had to be resolved.) Love it [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Dec 2018 03:44 AM PST Hi guys im considering buying the Pro 13 (2018, Quad Core i5 model) for video editing, some animation and some less intense things like watching a film or 2. Since the redesign the Pro's are infamous for its lack of ports and I just need help with any accessory recommendations for my editing needs (im aware of the need for an external hard drive) is there anything else you guys could recommend? Thanks for any help/pointers. [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Dec 2018 01:17 AM PST So I have a 2010 MBA and it worked alright until last year where I had to change the drive. I bought a new Samsung SSD and after that it worked fine. Now I have another problem: sometimes (but only sometimes!) When I press the power button, the fans go on but the display remains black. Then I have to force it shut down by holding the power some seconds. When I press the power key after that again, it just powers up as normal. I've already opened it to see if the logic board was damaged but couldn't see anything. Any ideas? [link] [comments]
Setting up a 2018 macbook air workstation Posted: 27 Dec 2018 12:23 AM PST Hey y'all. So I'm thinking of buying an external monitor and using my macbook air as its 'computer' (Not really sure of the terminology here). Was wondering if you guys know what I need to set up settings-wise to make this work. I want to keep the laptop itself closed, plugged to my external monitor, and charging at once. Haha, hope this isn't too awkwardly worded, I'm honestly terrible at this kind of thing. Any suggestions for a solid external monitor would be appreciated too! [link] [comments]
