    iOS 12 & iPhone Megathread [October 10, 2018]

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 06:44 PM PDT

Have a question? Need help with iOS 12? Problem with your device? This is the place to ask.

Starting now, we won't be approving posts that are questions or anything help-related resulting from iOS 12. Keeping everything in a megathread reduces the amount of help posts and one-sentence questions on the front page.

Posts critisizing or praising iOS 12/iPhones are fine. Feature explanations/requests are fine.

There'll be a new thread every week. If anyone has questions, please leave them below.

We also have a Discord server you can join if you need assistance with your device or have questions regarding iOS/iPhone in general, we have experienced Apple support staff & enthusiasts with vast iOS/iPhone knowledge.

If you see any iOS 12 help self-posts, or iPhone support questions in general on the front page, make sure to report it.

Private note: lately we've been getting tons of reports on posts with an image of a new iPhone and "I upgraded to XX after X years!". We understand that these posts may be low-quality, thus justifying the reports, however, we will approve the upgrade posts which foster discussion. Most posts like these have ~150 comments, and the quality is usually critical discussion, which is why you'd sometimes see posts like these that haven't been removed.

Opinion: I think the App Store should have a category for games with no in app purchases and that we only pay once for.

Opinion: It’s really not necessary for iOS to give that shutter sound when taking screenshot and allow others to think that I’m taking a picture of the floor or lap.

I take so many screen shots a day and had to flip the ringer switch every time. Is there a way to turn that off?

Are the WiFi and LTE challenges really a software update type fix or hardware?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 07:56 AM PDT

So I've had my Verizon XS since release and since I've had it the phone will sometimes disconnect from WiFi networks that my iPhone 8 used to have no issues connecting to. I was excited with 12.0.1 as it was supposed to fix it but no luck

I've tried resetting network settings since the update and still yesterday my phone on my desk disconnected from our WiFi network and I had to manually go back and select the network.

Also I've had random LTE outages in places where I've had full coverage. I had to do a full phone reset last night.

If anything it seems to be getting worse. Is this really a software thing or should I be more concerned?

Buying an iPhone 7 Plus in late 2018 - Worth It?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 09:21 AM PDT

Hello Reddit! I'm a tech geek and I have been an android fan for more than 5 years BUT I think its time to give iPhone a chance. I have been using Samsung Note 5 for last 2.5 years, its laggy, earphone jack works half of the times and it restarts time to time. I'm in need of a new phone ASAP but I'm also somewhat short on money. I can get it used in good condition for around $300 to $350 USD slightly hesitant because I'm the kind of person who wants to be able to use a phone for at least 2-3 years before upgrading. If I bought an iPhone 7 Plus today, would it be completely outdated 2 years from now or what should I expect? What will I be missing? Is the camera good? how well will the processor hold up to today's apps/games? Thanks a lot!

Congrats Google, you've convinced my to go back to Apple.

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 10:31 AM PDT

Don't get me wrong, but the pricing has killed the Pixel now that it's in direct competition.

The XR starts at 749, 50 less than the starting price of the Pixel 3 at 799 but the XR at 799 has twice the storage, more color options, better accessory and case selection, more apps and longer and superior support.

The Pixel 3 XL starts at 899, the price as the original iPhone X currently for 64GB but for another hundred dollars you get 1 year more of support (5 years of apple, 3 for Google, your iPhone X will have longer support) twice the storage (256 vs 128GB for the Pixel) and again, better case and accessory selection.

I'm sorry but my personal Pixel XL is now paid off, works 2XL still has another year but but now that your in competition with Apple 1:1 the appeal is gone. But at least OnePlus seems to be taking the mantle with the same time of support and pricing that you'd expect.

I'll be back in a couple weeks with my Red 128GB XR. Or blue. I still haven't decided. Hell I might even walk into Verizon and get a 256GB iPhone X today.

Looking for Nexus 5X replacement, is an iPhone right for me?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 10:31 AM PDT

I'm a Nexus 5X owner. Bought it at release, still going strong, couldn't be happier. I would keep using it for 5 more years if I could really, but there are two issues:

    • No guaranteed security updates after November 2018. I could keep using it with LineageOS, but...
    • This phone model is known to randomly bootloop. It didn't happen to me yet, but the risk exists.

Both of these mean that I will likely need to replace it someday soon.

I never owned an Apple product, and am mostly ignorant about them. I am considering and iPhone because I heard the following things:

    • The phones are supported much longer than Android phones.
    • Some iPhone models are quite small.

Is there any truth to these statements?

Whatever phone I get next, I intend to keep for 5+ years, I don't need to upgrade for better hardware often, all apps that I use daily run perfectly fine on my Nexus 5X. I would also like a phone smaller than a Nexus 5X (5.2'').

Lastly, how are Google Apps on iPhones? Do they run a few versions behind or is there feature parity?

    Thank you.

10 year Android user looking for some advice

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 09:51 AM PDT

Hey guys, lifelong Android user here, from the very first HTC Dream in 2008 to the Pixel XL I have now. After watching Google's live stream yesterday, I can't help but feel like it was a little lackluster. My pixel phone has been amazing, and it's likely the best Android phone on the market, but I can't help the feel like it was extremely bias so I wanted to ask you guys about the very slim, likely stubborn possibility of switching to iPhone. My biggest issue is transitioning over to a new OS. I've got so much invested into Google Drive, Google photos, their cloud, everything. I'm wondering how easy it would be transitioning. I use my phone to call, text, browse Reddit, Facebook and YouTube occasionally take some pictures. Can you guys give me some reasons to make a switch? I honestly don't know much about iPhones other than the arguments that I see online that don't give me any real information. Thanks.

    Alarm goes off at 2:00am

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 05:02 AM PDT

For three nights straight, my alarm has gone off at 2am but here's the twist.

My alarm is set for 5:30 am every Monday thru Friday

For the last three nights my alarm would go off, I'd look at my phone, the clock shows 5:30am.

I walk out of my bedroom thinking Im getting ready for work, to glance at the clock on my wall and it says 2:00am. I think, what??

So now, I check all the clocks in my home, to find all say 2:00am. I go back to my phone, it also shows 2:00am now.

For three nights in a row....same story, same exact way. I've had this phone over a month now.

Service Center Test Photos and Videos

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 06:57 AM PDT

My iPhone came back from the UK Service Center yesterday complete with a bunch of test shots on it. I doubt this is normal - it looks like they forgot to reset it when they were done.

Thought some of you might find it interesting to see some of the calibration tests and parts of the inside of the Vulcan Way Service Center.

    iPhone 7 disconnecting from network.

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 10:26 AM PDT

Keep having issues where phone disconnects from network. Called in and Apple refers me to their website which says they have a flawed component in logic board. Okay, go into Apple store to get it fixed. $319 because my camera has a crack in it. Screen recently replaced, paid to have battery replaced too. Now they want me to pay $319 because of a known flaw in their logic board, because I have a crack in the camera that has nothing to do with that. How do I get this escalated beyond customer service and the store? I'm about to switch to pixel.

Just a little love and appreciation for the Apple Silicone case...for once.

    Posted: 10 Oct 2018 10:21 AM PDT

I see quite a few posts praising the Apple Leather case and Apple Leather always seems to win on those "leather vs. silicone" posts.

I personally hate cases and prefer to rock my phone naked but my hands just get so damn sweaty that i will sometimes put a case on to combat that and make the experience more comfortable for myself. With my Xs I decided to try the midnight blue silicone case opposed to the leather option I typically have. The leather is gorgeous, don't get me wrong, but i really do love the way the silicone case feels in the hand. Adds so much grip and just feels really nice to hold.

I've seen how ugly these cases can get after a year of use or so but I mean...$50 a year for a case or taking it in to have Apple warranty the case out doesn't seem too bad. I'm sure this case won't last nearly as long as the leather cases but I'm really happy with it.

To those of you on the fence, just go and try both cases for yourself, don't let the sub choose for you. Those pictures of super dirty cases aren't really the move imo. I REALLY don't understand why people try to speed up this "patina" process on their phone cases. Maybe they've never had a nice bag or belt that develops a patina over time from being worn in the sun and what not. But anyways, that's just me and my little two cents on the Apple silicone case.
