A Day with the Apple Watch 4 LTE with no iPhone

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 05:28 PM PDT

Backstory: I work as a technician at a data center. I usually carry my work phone and personal phone but decided to leave my personal phone at home today.

At 8am I took the watch off the charger and was at 100%. During the first hour, I realized while sitting in the office that my phone was connected to my company WIFI. I decided to run it as a true LTE so I disconnected from the WIFI. After doing that, I did notice that the watch was discharging faster. Throughout the day I listened to music through bluetooth. Roughly around 3-4 hours worth. It's worth noting that the music wasn't streamed via LTE but played off a playlist that was downloaded on to the watch. Listened to a 2H2M podcast that was also downloaded onto my watch. Used Apple Maps to navigate to a company site, exactly 20 minute each way so a total of 40m of using LTE to navigate. I sent under 15 text messages using voice/scribble. 6M27S phone call. Got around 20-30 IG notifications for DMs. Checked mail under 10 times. Made a couple of reminders. Apple watch was at 5% at 410pm and at that point I placed it in power reserve mode. I was hoping to attach screenshots to show actual percentages, but for some reason the last half of the day the screenshots weren't saving. I'll make a more detailed post next time but I figured this could be useful to someone.

    Aluminum or Steel for S4?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 02:51 AM PDT

Gang, I did search for this topic, and didn't find a lot.

I've had every version of  Watch except Series 1. I've never splurged for the Steel version...it wasn't a cost thing, but a weight thing, along with feedback and reviews that stated the haptics were weak.

I'm definitely getting a S4 and I'm considering space black steel, instead of space gray aluminum, to protect the screen and for the look. I worry about the weight. I run a lot and play sports, but nothing too much. I also work in an office and type a lot.

If anyone has made the switch, or has an option on it, I'd really like to hear your thoughts.

[Question] Apple Watch Series 4 Battery

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:56 AM PDT

So I upgraded my Series 3 w/ Celluar to a Series 4. I've had it for about a week now and I've noticed the battery dying a lot quicker than my Series 3. Just last night I charged my watch to 100% and put it on my desk. When I woke up, my watch was at 91%. I was wondering if anyone else has a similar experience. Im just wondering because I don't remember my watch series dropping 9% overnight. Thank you!

I noticed my S4 screen was displaying uneven lighting like some other. So I told Apple about the problem. A few chats and a day later and this showed up at my office. Apple gets things wrong sometimes, but when they get it right, they really get it right.

Just checking to see if anyone has a case and screen protector on their S4 yet and if so if they would recommend.

Series 4 - Walked 1.5 miles and Stood for 8 hours, While sitting at my desk all day.

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:57 PM PDT

I will preface this by saying that i am heavily tattooed in the wrist area. The old series 2 would not work with my tattoos

so i returned it. The series 4 seems to accurately track my heart rate (i tested against a chest strap HRM). I don't know if the stand and walking activity are tracked by heart rate and my tattoos are affecting it... or something else entirely. anyone have any suggestions?

New To AW, missing notifications throughout the day

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:15 AM PDT

Since using my new Apple Watch, I'm missing notifications. Just in the course of moving around and my hands and arms being busy, I often don't feel or notice the taps from the watch, and am surprised later to see that I've received iMessages etc. Also I'm kind of disoriented by a new form of feedback- I could instantly tell what was happening on my phone just by the sound it made. I was able to tell without looking what was important and what was not. But all I'm getting now are taps, and I can't tell the difference between iMessage, Gmail, Outlook etc.

    1) Is there way to restore audible notifications to my phone when using the Watch?

    2) Does is get better/easier to decipher the taptic feedback on the wrist?

    Notifications and anxiety

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 07:22 AM PDT

Hello AW users! I just ordered the s4 - my very first smart watch! Question for those of you that have general, daily anxiety. Do you find that having text/call/email notifications attached to your wrist increases your general anxiety levels? Or does it decrease it because you aren't always checking your phone? Thanks for your insights!

    Gym FOB/barcode

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 03:23 AM PDT

Has anyone been able to use their Apple Watch to display the barcode used on some cards (e.g. library or gym). I currently have a picture of my gym membership barcode on my phone, which the gym scans for admission, but it would be nice just to use my watch.

Edit: just downloaded Stocard and it's so easy to use! Thanks everyone!

How do I delete these photos from the iOS Watch app?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 01:28 AM PDT

In the Watch app on my iPhone I was looking at the Face Gallery, and under Photos it shows me this

    https://imgur.com/jKFJ78h

So uh, I blanked them out but those photos are kind of photos that I don't want anyone to see ever. I have an album with 0 photos synced to my Watch so these photos should exist purely on my iPhone/iPhotos. I just don't want them to be suggested to me as watch faces.

    SERIES 4 BATTERIES

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:45 AM PDT

Hello, I have a series 4 44mm right now. I hate it. I cant make it through a day without charging. It also seems as if when im listening to music it must go through the watch even if i dont want it to.

Im thinking of bringing it back to get a 40mm in hopes that it will change some of the battery life for the better.

My question: are they the same size batteries or would this be futile?

    Edit: 40 not 42 mm

    Recently added music playlist?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:39 AM PDT

Any way to add a playlist for recently added music in Apple Music app to the watch? I don't see it listed in playlists that you can add to the watch but it's a feature in the Apple Music app itself.

    (Email) Notifications does not work!

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 04:51 AM PDT

    Normally I manage to find solutions to problems, and if i fail to do so, I'll just UTFS to get it done. But this? This is biting me up in my @$$, and since I prefer -not- to throw a 1 - day - old Watch against the wall out of frustration I just ask it here;

I'm sending countless email to myself, waiting for a notification; it doesn't happen!

-Using 2 email accounts ( both gmail )

-in iPhone/My Watch/notifications: custom is selected / allow notification is selected; both accounts are set on "on"

-iPhone is locked when I'm sending emails Watch is unlocked/DND/theatre/airplane mode is off, WiFi and BT both up and running on iPhone.

    -Notific.grouping; automatically

    What am I doing wrong!?

Restored from Backup, Movement no longer tracking?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:13 AM PDT

Last night I had to reset my Xs Max, and after doing so, it was no longer recognizing my Apple Watch (Series 2). I did a reset and restore on the Watch and the phone recognizes it again, but now I'm several hours into my day and it is still registering me as having moved 0/30 minutes. Now, I haven't done a full exercise routine, but I've run my dogs out, gone up and down several flights of stairs, and walked around the office at a fairly decent pace. On an average day, I'd be between 5-7 minutes down. Still nothing registered. Active Calorie burn and Standing seem fine and no issues. It's just the movement where I'm seeing the issues. I have tried resetting the Health data, the wrist detection, and turning both my phone and watch off and back on in that order.

    Anyone else experience this?

    Apple Watch face concept

    Apple Watch face concept

Support for 3rd party watch faces is probably the thing I miss the most on watchOS. To play with the idea I made a Watch face concept and recorded a timelapse while designing it:

    https://youtu.be/YgsTW7udn0A

What do you think? What other watch faces would like to see in watchOS?

Why are my steps in Activity always 2x than with any other step app?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:02 AM PDT

I track my steps with Pacer & Pedometer++ & get a near average of 3,000 steps. With the activity app it's always 5,000-6,000 steps. Why is this such a large discrepancy between the three?

The oleophobic coating on my Apple Watch seems uneven. Even though my s1 was a fingerprint magnet, it wasn’t concentrated in the center. Does this seem normal?

I was really starting to feel like my Apple Watch was a waste of money

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 07:52 AM PDT

Pretty much since I bought I back in June I've felt like I wasted my money on it. Granted, I got it for $279 at Best Buy, so I got an okay deal. But especially after the release of the S4 I've been thinking "why did I buy this lol".

But recently it got damaged and I'm sending it in to Apple to see if it's covered by the warranty, and I find myself missing it more than I thought I would. I keep checking my wrist for the time, or when I get a notification I look at my wrist.

Now if I want to do anything I have to pull my phone out like the old days.

    Powerful biometric

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 07:42 AM PDT

Heart Rate Variability is an incredibly powerful and useful biometric that reflects the balance of our autonomic nervous system. I was psyched that the Apple Watch 4 computes this stat.

However, I wish it would compute it with specific breathing apps I have downloaded or "on demand," for specific amount of times. Maybe this is a limitation from the app developer or not allowed by Apple.

So far, I haven't found any third party apps that communicate to our phones providing HRV, but I have found that HRV is computed during: Breathe app, workout, HR app, and spontaneously in the background throughout the day.

Does anyone know of any other apps that can record HRV from the watch and also how often our watch records heart rate (and thus HRV) in the background? I reviewed my data and it seemed like it recorded HR in background every 4 hours?

    Thanks for any insight!
