AppleTV & Netflix Original Content: 4k in HFR?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 10:50 PM PDT

While I don't have a formal way to test this, it looks like all Netflix original content (at least when available in 4k HDR/DV) is playing in HFR (High Frame Rate) mode. Does anyone have any info here? I've found a couple articles mentioning Netflix transitioning to support more HFR content, but nothing concrete, and of course they don't helpfully label these things in the app. Also, it looks absolutely wrong in film to my eyes, and I've love a way to disable it if possible.

    Some info on my setup:

    • LG C7 OLED TV (all motion interpolation and related features disabled)

    • AppleTV 4k (confirmed high speed HDMI cable in use)

    • Confirmed working: frame rate matching, dynamic range, HDR/Dolby Vision, 4k content at proper frame rates in other apps, e.g., Infuse

I also checked out some non-Netflix original content at 4k (and at regular HD) within the Netflix app, and it played without that HFR "smooth" effect. So it's not just the Netflix app acting weird, or my TV or AppleTV being misconfigured. I'm kind of surprised there's not more talk about this that I could find on the internet, but I'm guessing it's a combination of me having a pretty new TV and Netflix maybe rolling out these HFR changes recently?

If you're curious and have a setup that can play it, titles I've tried that are affected:

    • Hold the Dark

    • Next Gen

    • Extinction

And some that played normally (non-Netflix content):

    • Breaking Bad (4k)

    • DOOM (HD)

My ATV 4K doesn’t detect HDMI audio output on my TV with tvOS 12

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 06:33 PM PDT

    Hey hey.

Some time ago I got the ATV 4K and I've really been enjoying it. That is, until recently. Prior to installing the latest tvOS version everything worked just fine, but ever since I updated to version 12 my ATV doesn't output HDMI audio to my television anymore. It displays an empty Audio Output menu, which it didn't before.

Now, I'm at least partially putting the blame on myself for getting a cheap off-brand TV, but it used to work just fine with tvOS 11, so I'm not really sure what's up. The ATV 4K itself is fine, as when I connect it to my computer monitor it outputs HDMI audio just fine.

I already tried forcing stereo sound and I also tried forcing 16-bit audio. I also tried resetting my ATV. My television only has one HDMI port, so I can't try another one.

Is there an option I missed? Do you guys know of a solution?

captive portal in rest home, what workaround is easiest for Grandma?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 11:02 AM PDT

I'm aware that an AppleTV can't connect to a captive portal network... Or I am now after wasting a bunch of time trying to set hers up. There's no way I'm going to be able to explain spoofing to Grandma so the choices I guess are whitelisting and travel router right?

I know whitelisting would be easiest but the rest home doesn't have an IT specialist on staff and no one seems to understand my inquiry about the service provider. Q1: is there any way to phrase this request so that I could walk someone who works at the front desk of an old age home through this process?

Travel router is option 2, but I've never used one before and I'm concerned about adding another strange blinking box to Grandma's pile of other strange blinking boxes. Q(s)2: After I set one up, will it stay connected forever? Is the network likely to detect it and boot it off? Will I need to instruct Grandma in its usage (difficult at best) or can I just set it and forget it?

Please help, my grandmother is starting to get upset that I refuse to "just call Netflix, I have the password right here".

    Very appreciated. -K

No internet connection on Apple TV after every boot, requires restart to get online.

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 01:06 PM PDT

I've recently switched over from the previous model Apple TV to the Apple TV 4K. After having it for a couple days, I've been experiencing the most annoying thing ever for the latst 2 months.

I'm running the latest version of TVOS, but it has been occurring over the last few versions. It did not start at a specific version. My Apple TV is always on standby mode when not using.

When I turn it on for when for example watching movies. I have no internet connection. The tiles are not loading, apps such as Netflix and YouTube won't load or login. But when looking into my Network settings, a connection to my home WiFi is shown.

When restarting the Apple TV via the settings menu, or by removing the power for a few seconds. All problems are gone until it has been in stand by mode again.

What makes it even weirder is that my house is completely HomeKit compatible, and my Apple TV is my hub. When my Apple TV is in stand by mode, I can still control my HomeKit accessories over my mobile data network — which uses my Apple TV to reach them.

Also when this problem occurs, all my other devices, iPhones, iPads and Macs are working perfectly fine over WiFi.

It became a habit to just restart the Apple TV after turning it on. But It is starting to become very - very frustrating. Are more people experiencing this problem? Or did someone manage to fix this. Technical answers are more than welcome!

I'm SO tired of having to re-login to apps!!!!!

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 11:24 AM PDT

Am I doing something wrong or does everyones AppleTV make you re-login into your TV apps (everything from Disney Kids to Net Geo) on a regular basis? Apple seriously needs to address this because it's getting extremely old!

Audio sync gets worse as time goes on

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 04:31 PM PDT

I got a new AppleTV 4K, and its video is going to a 4K HDR display, which in turn sends audio to a soundbar over its HDMI ARC port.

I've noticed, I think since the most recent update, that I'm getting persistent audio gaps. They're very short, well under a second, and occur infrequently (perhaps once per couple minutes). The problem is that they seem to correspond to a shift in audio sync. The movie starts out fine, and the sync gradually gets worse as time goes on. When it gets unbearable, I can stop the video and restart it, and it's perfectly in sync again. But the issue repeats.

I primarily use Plex, and the videos affected seem to be those with DTS-HD soundtracks. HDMI-ARC is limited to Dolby 5.1, so that's what my audio output is set to.

I have maximum output set to 4K Dolby Vision 60Hz, and Match Rate is on.

Is there something I'm missing? I'm not sure where else to look. The settings are pretty sparse. Thanks!

Control AVR volume with iOS device airplay2 controls?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 08:17 AM PDT

As it stands right now, I have 2 volume controls: the AVR AND airplay2 volume from my iOS device. I can control the AVR volume from the appleTV remote and I can control the iOS device airplay 2 volume from iOS device (separately).

Is there any way for the iOS device to control the AVR's volume (not airplay audio level) from the airplay2 volume control menu, so I only have one control? Sometimes the AVR is down and the device volume is up and vice versa... It get's confusing.

I have an LG TV and a denon AVR. The AVR and TV turn off but not on over HDMI CEC. The AVR and TV volume can be controlled over HDMI CEC as well.

Any help, best practices etc is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

    A shorter Power cable

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 09:24 PM PDT

Is it just NOT possible to purchase a short power cable for the Apple TV?? Jesus..I have my box mounted to the back of my tv and I want like a 1.5-2ft power cable but the shortest I can find is 3ft. Would it be difficult to just shorten the cable myself? I'm really OCD when it comes to cable management.

    Dolby vision not working. Tips?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 09:29 AM PDT

So I have been watching ozarks on Netflix in Dolby vision. I have Apple TV 4K and Vizio p series. I can successfully use Dolby vision with other devices.

The issue is with Apple TV 4K. They whites are ridiculously dim. ThAts about as good as I can explain it. For instance: the ozarks opening logo is almost dark grey not bright white the way it is in non Dolby.

I switched to my tv's Netflix app which can utilize hdr and the difference was night and day. In Dolby vision the ozarks logo is bright crisp white.

On the tv I have everything set up correctly in terms of settings and switches.

On Apple TV 4K I also have enable hdr and everything set up correctly.

    Tips? Suggestions?

    Ty.

    Subtitles on Netflix

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 01:21 PM PDT

Seems to be no way to change or turn off subtitles on Apple TV 4K. They just appear by default. No options in the app, at least. Someone said something about tapping the middle button three times, but that does jack shit. What am I missing? No options in the settings for Apple TV, either. Just language.
