Hello, I am also having an issue with the spacebar. It's ridiculous and barely works at all now. I just took my laptop into the store and they told me it's repairable under warranty so thats cool, but they told me there is nothing i can do in future cases except bring it in to the store for repair.

This is an issue because I've had this thing for 2 months, and these issues started a few week ago. If I'm going to have to come in every 2 months to have my 3000 dollar laptop fixed, then what is the point?

Do you guys think I could get a refund on this thing? I know the return policy is 14 days, but this is not the laptop I thought I paid for. (I live in Canada if that changes anything)

I will call customer service or something later to ask, but I was wondering what y'all's thoughts are.

I lost my MacBook Pro and received three options through insurance. Which do I chose?

    https://i.redd.it/1mdz1thfznr11.png

Asurion has offered me three different options to replace a 2015 MacBook Pro (Model A1502). Based on specs, I have no idea what year these MacBooks are (or even the Microsoft Surface for the matter).

I'm not very Apple-product-savvy and was hoping you guys could help me identify what year model the three laptops were made, if it's better than the original 2015 A1502, and which Laptop you would chose out of the the three. Thanks a ton!

    Fixing an "old" macbook air

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 10:12 PM PDT

    Hello everybody!

One of my clients gave me a 2012 macbook air to do some iOS app developing. It works, not particularly fast but it's ok. Only problems it has are two: battery probably needs replacing (can use it without charging for about 20 minutes, then it dies even if it's still at 50%) and the macbook gets too hot for doing small tasks, so i guess it needs some thermal paste replaced.

How much do you think it's gonna cost? Should i try to bring it to an apple store, a third party shop or do it my own, if it's not too hard?

Thank you very much in advance!

    Accidentally touched exposed battery cells.

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 08:14 PM PDT

When I was attempting to change the batteries of my Macbook air, I accidentally touched the battery's exposed Lithium ion cells.

Will I be okay? I know now that this isn't safe to do, but I'm getting really concerned about the effects of my touching the exposed cells.

best small form-factor to add storage space?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 11:30 AM PDT

I have a new 2018 Macbook Pro but my company only got the 256GB drive. I'm looking to add to the drive with some kind of USB-C flash drive I guess but I need something low profile since I will be using it in the field. If anyone has been in the same boat, what was your solution?

My Experience with Macbook Pro 2018 Keyboard

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 02:46 AM PDT

    TL;DR

    - Keyboard/spacebar problem in 2018 model (surprise, surprise).

    - This goes out to those in the same boat on the look out for temporary fixes (most Google searches point to keyboard problems on 2016/2017 models).

    - Repair/replacement not an option for me for now.

    - (Temporary) Software fix with aahung's Unshaky app.

First of all, I got the Macbook Pro 2018 13-inch 2.3 Ghz i5 model, purchased from an Apple Premium Reseller in my home country (no Apple Store unfortunately).

Just would like to mention one key issue that has/had affected me since my purchase just over a month ago.

Keyboard problem. Yes, Apple has made improvements to the 2018 MBP model's keyboard, but I don't believe it's been resolved totally, as forum posts online do talk about some 2018 MBP users experiencing problems. That includes the model I bought where the only problem seems to be extra space key presses (i.e. unwanted double spacing) which used to occur maybe 5-40% of the the time. I can also confirm that in the space of a month I've had nothing spilled and no crumbs/dust lodging in between keys and never once have I dropped the laptop.

As I mentioned, there's no Apple Store in my home country which means repair requests or replacements would take north of 2-3 weeks, and I also happen to be working for two months in another country also lacking an Apple Store. And I 100% need my laptop for work. So spending time away from my MBP is not a choice for now.

    Things I've tried:

    - Checked to see if it's a software issue; probably not.

    - Turning off Key Repeat and changing Delay Until Repeat settings; no difference.

    - Pressing the spacebar harder or more lightly; no difference.

    - Pressing the spacebar at different spots; no difference although seems to be worse when I press smack in the middle.

    - Cleaning with canned air while holding the MBP at different angles; no difference.

    - Pressing down hard on the whole of the spacebar 'to get it stick back into place'; no difference.

    - Pressing down on the metal frame holding the keyboard particularly around the spacebar area; this actually made some difference albeit temporary. The first time I did it I also heard a bit of sound I can't really describe but gave me the impression that the frame may have been warped upwards/outwards away from the inner layer of the keyboard (if that makes sense) perhaps due to heat (laptop heat, heat during shipping, etc.). Likely wrong and no way to prove this, though.

Solution? Unfortunately the problem still persisted and sending it for repair isn't an option for me right now.

Temporary fix? Unshaky by aahung on Github (https://github.com/aahung/Unshaky) seems to do the trick (getting double spaces 0-3% of the time now). It's not perfect (also Cmd+Space for Spotlight weirdly doesn't work but Alfred's always there to help), but this really saves my days as typing is probably >80% of my work.

Yes, external keyboards are an option. Yes, choosing a different OS to work with is an option (unfortunately/fortunately I've migrated 100% from Windows to an iOS/MacOS workflow to make my workflow more 'seamless'). But at this point, the Unshaky app is the best I can do for now until I can find time to send the laptop in for repair/replacement.

Hope this helps someone out there.

So im using Chrome and what I have always done so I can watch reaction videos is press fullscreen on the video player then press the green button so the tabs come back and what used to happen was the video would stay the full size of the window so i was able to drag another window playing the show im watching on top of it.

But now whenever I press the green button the video snaps back to being small again so I cant layer my windows anymore.

MBP 2018 15" Sticky Key Problem!

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 03:30 AM PDT

So i have the 2018 15" MBP and i was quite happy with it up until about 3 days ago.

I keep my MBP pretty clean, i even have extra wet towels to clean it from fat etc.

So 3 days ago i started noticing that my E key was being written 2x or sometimes even missing completely, first i thought maybe it has something to do with the Mojave update, but no because then it would not just be 1 key.

I started to type a little to maybe crush the dust piece thats below the key if there is any to try and fix it, no luck.

I then thought to myself, how is this possible?

I have a brand new machine here, maybe about 2 months old at best, it has not been in terrible environment in fact it was at my desk 90% of the time.

So whats going on here, do i really have to give this MBP back to Apple again, has the "condom" over the keys not helped at all?

To demonstrate the problem i will write a short text below in German

Correct words: elefanten elfen sind edle tiere

Example: elefanten elfen sind edle tiere, elefanten elfen sind edle tier, eelefantene elfen sind edlee tiere, eleefanten lfen sind edle tiere, elefantne eelfeen sind edle tier, eelefanten elfen sind edle tiere.

As you can see in the example thats how it looks when i try to repeat the example words without editing or correcting the mistakes.

    FURIOUS!

I hope someone here has some tips, i still have Apple Care but i cannot send in it at this moment because i am not home, maybe in about a month i could.

Upgrade current 2012 MBP or buy new 2018 MBP?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 04:51 AM PDT

Hello, looking for advice on what to do here:

I have a mid-2012 MBP, 2.5GZ, 4GB ram, no SSD I've been using for 5 years. I mainly use it for MS Suite, internet, youtube, and PDFs. My most heavy usage would be occasionally basic PSD. The RAM and lack of SSD has been particularly noticeable.

I have my eye on a 2018 Macbook Pro, no touchbar, which would be more than enough for my needs AND last quite a few years.

I have 2 options: 1. Upgrade the RAM, SSD, and get a new battery for less than $500. OR 2. Buy the new MBP for $1500

My main concerns are longevity and value: I have got many years out of my current laptop, and the upgrade would get a couple years more at most. However, I would have to buy a new laptop at some point, so it feels like it's delaying the inevitable.

    Any advice/thoughts? Thanks.

    Non Apple Chargers

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 07:45 AM PDT

Lost my charger for a mid 2016 pro, is it safe to use a well rated non apple one on amazon or should I buy the apple brand one?

Edit: Thank you for the caution, I bought the apple version. Still feel dumb for spending $80 on a charger though...

Old MBP: reinstall osx (+format/wipe) without a working optical drive?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2018 06:02 AM PDT

Hello, I have a (very) old MBP that I would like to reinstall the original OS and format my drive--planning to give this laptop to someone, hopefully without all my data on it. But my optical drive has been out of commission for some time. Is there any way to do this without a working optical drive?

I'm not even sure what the original OS was, but all I have is the original disc and no disc drive :/

    Thank you!
