Fastest way to move to new MacBook Pro

    Posted: 23 Oct 2018 06:32 AM PDT

TL;DR: I want to clone my MBPs storage over to an identical new machine in the fastest way possible but the ways I tried didn't work.

I've had to get my MBP 15" 2018 model replaced a few times, and have to go in again. The last few times, I've tried multiple things to speed up the slow process of restoring all the data:

    1. Time Machine via HDD over USB3.0
I used a 4TB GoFlex Desk Drive by Seagate that I've had for years, that does around 80MB/s write and 90MB/s reads over USB3.0. Although it seems like throughput isn't actually the limiting factor, because the restore from Time Machine takes approx. 3-4h to complete. I should also note that, since the backups are made using Mojave, and the 2018 MBP models are being shipped with High Sierra, I need to add an additional 30-40 mins for download and upgrade process.
    2. Migration Assistant over Ethernet
Using either "dongle-in-dongle" (TB2-TB3 + TB2-Ethernet) or Belkin's TB3-Ethernet adapter (which uses more CPU at high-throughput which limits the maximum throughput, be it marginally). Either of these methods give me around 30MB/s at most and end up with an ETA around 3-8h, depending on the speed at the time of measurement (large files might affect the speed, since the uplink is fast, but when you have thousands of small files, that won't help much).
    3. Migration Assistant with Thunderbolt 3 cable
Using a Thunderbolt 3 cable (not the charging cable, but this one), having WiFi networks disconnected (I wasn't able to turn WiFi off, but I made sure it wasn't connected and that it wouldn't auto-join), it seems to have made a peer-to-peer connection over WiFi and ignored the Thunderbolt 3 cable altogether (despite showing up as local bridge network and having an IP and confirmed network activity between the machines).
    4. Migration Assistant with TB3 cable using the source machine in Target Disk Mode
I figured this would be the fastest way, but this too showed a ETA of over 5 hours.

Now I'm looking for a new Thunderbolt 3 SSD (Samsung X5 being the primary candidate) to use for Time Machine backups, but wasn't able to find many experiences regarding the speed difference. I understand that even though the actual throughput of the X5 being around 2GB/s, that might not matter since Time Machine has to calculate hashes and built it's index, which makes the CPU the bottleneck. During full-backups, I do set the low_pri flag to speed up and ignore CPU throttling, but I can't set it while I'm running Migration Assistant from Recovery Mode, nor do I believe that the CPU throttling would be enabled for restoration (since it's not considered a background process).

I'm also interested to know if anyone has ever used Disk Utility's "Restore" functionality to simply create a block-copy and restore that via Target Disk Mode (I guess either machine could be running in Target Disk Mode). Not sure if it would the work faster, given that Migration Assistant didn't make full use of TB3 with Target Disk Mode.

Does anyone have experience with cloning/migrating the full contents of one MBP to another (both 2018, same specs, source machine has Firmware Password and Full Disk Encryption on), that can be used to transfer all contents of the drive, making the most use of available throughput? Does anyone know if the first step of upgrading macOS can be avoided? Help would be really appreciated, thanks!

    [Shortcut]SSH Tools

    SSH Tools

I was inspired by another shortcut I found to make this. It is one of my most advanced shortcuts that I have made.

This allows you to control your Mac via SSH command.

    Features thus far:

    1. Automatically check for updates
    2. Checks if connected to WiFi to execute SSH commands
    3. Locks the system
    4. Unlocks the system
    5. Change volume of system
    6. Pause/Play video (tested on YouTube and Netflix)
    7. All user settings and password are saved in a file on device for security.

I plan on adding support for multiple languages in the future. Let me know what language you would like to see supported.

If you have any suggestions on what I should add next please let me know.

How to upgrade memory on Macbook Air 2017?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2018 09:33 AM PDT

    Hi y'all,

I bought the MacBook Air 2017 and now I am almost regretting buying the 128GB option. Is there a way to upgrade the memory economically? Would a 64/128GB SDXC card fit? Are there any options which I can use?

    Thanks,

    Rob

Mouse and Trackpad natural scrolling option is for both actually.

Bought a wireless microsoft mouse for macbook pro, everything is fine but I prefer natural scrolling for trackpad and default for mouse, although there's different settings for each I noticed it applies on both. That's annoying, anyone else having same issue?

    Anyone use MacBook with Android?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2018 08:27 AM PDT

Why? What adjustments did you have to make?

I just switched back to Android with the Note 9. Google Tasks and Calendar syncs with iCal/Reminders (and Fantastical). I don't like using apps in browsers, so I hope I can find desktop equivalents for Mac.

    Macbook Charger Question

    Posted: 23 Oct 2018 08:07 AM PDT

    Hello All,

I have found my old macbook ( I mean really old circa /2006-first generation) but the charger that went with it is broken now. The charger was a 60W charger but my question is can i just buy any current 60W charger out there now to use on this Macbook to operate it? Or is there no way to get this to work anymore?

    Thanks

    MacBook Battery Life

    Posted: 23 Oct 2018 07:36 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I recently bought a new MacBook battery (unofficial) and am unhappy with the life (1 hour using Safari/Mail/etc.) I got in touch with the selling company and they replied with the following:

thanks for getting back to me. I am actually writing this email from a Macbook and therefore know a bit about these machines. The laptop will get slower over time and will consume more battery which will result in reduced the battery lifetime.

Are they talking out of their ass or is this an actual issue?

Thumbnails missing (.jpeg, .png and else..) on Mac?

Thumbnails missing (.jpeg, .png and else..) on Mac?

    Hello,

I have a problem, since few days I can't see the thumbnails preview that you usually have for your pictures, so you don't have to open them to see what they are about.

Which is a real problem when going through a folder full of images and don't want to through each of them...

    https://i.redd.it/o5ibmctg7xt11.png

They all show as above, which is really annoying. Does anyone have a solution?

Yes in Finder options, 'Show preview' is ticked
