Macbook Pro 2013 Stolen - Replaced with a new 2017 Touch Bar!

    Posted: 19 Jun 2018 10:55 PM PDT

I had a 2013 Macbook Pro 15" Retina - 16GB Ram, i7 2.6Ghz (fastest avail. at the time) w/512GB ssd. It was my first Mac, it was the laptop that helped me through university, and it was an awesome machine!

It got stolen in October from a car while on vacation in Montreal, along with so many other things I had in my laptop bag! (I know, I know, I learned my lesson)

Anyhow, I FINALLY received a reimbursement 8 months later from my homeowners insurance! It was Montreal's fault for the delay, they made it so difficult and time-consuming to obtain a police report my family created in the first place!

So today I picked up a brand new 15" touchbar i7 w/16GB ram and a 1TB SSD, along with the Radeon Pro 560, and man is this thing SWEET!

I thought I would hate the keyboard, it is actually great! I had a moshi keyboard protector on my macbook before, so the travel on these keys feel almost the same as my old machine! And I use a Corsair K70 mechanical keyboard for both my gaming PC and work PC, and I still think this feels nice! The performance is smooth, can't say I've tested battery much yet, and I can't get over how thin this thing is! Since October I have used a 2011 and 2009 macbook I was able to get my hands on, it was a temporary step backwards, but now I have this.

My original plan was to buy this and return it because I anticipated not liking it, but it seems to be great so far! I am sure the lack of ports will get annoying at one point, but we will have to see. I know this isn't the best time to buy a Mac, but if there is any indication of new MacBooks coming out soon, I may end up returning this to wait for new hardware. I am just glad that I am able to use this keyboard and touchbar without issue!

Trying to clone HDD to SSD issue with SATA to USB cable

    Posted: 19 Jun 2018 01:03 PM PDT

So I'm trying to convert my MacBook Pro 13" 2010 running high Sierra from HDD to SSD

I've tried resetting SMC and PRAM but no matter what I do the light on my SATA cable keeps going off after being connected for ten seconds and the SSD isn't recognized by disk utility.

I've tried plugging in the SATA to usb cable into a different computer and the power light stays lit so it can't be the cable.

    Any suggestions?

Trying to clean up my hard drive

    Posted: 19 Jun 2018 05:58 PM PDT

I have a 2015 model Macbook pro. 250 gb hard drive has 8 gigs left on it. Im looking for suggestions on how to clean it all up.

I have an external hard drive (separate from my drive where i store my back up) That i use to store data like large textbooks or downloaded movies.

Is it possible to store my whole itunes and photos library on there and delete them from the computer and have both of those applications still recognize the data? I have a 1Tb external, and it would be incredible to have the flexibility of removing nearly 1/2 of my macbook's SSD?

I have also used "daisy disk" periodically to clean up so trash that is difficcult to find elsewhere on my device

If anyone has more elegant solutions (on top of going through bit by bit and cleaning each of those libraries up) it would be much appreciated?

    Bootcamp

    Posted: 19 Jun 2018 09:00 AM PDT

I'm trying to get a usb device (capture card) to connect and be recognized by macOs but it appears that it's a windows device. Should this device work in theory if I'm able to bootcamp? Basically my question is, does the usb hardware change to "windows" "rules" is active? This would save me quite a bit of money if I'm able to do this on this old machine. Thanks.

What should I ensure when buying second hand Mac?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2018 04:33 AM PDT

I'm a web developer, and while I'm not an expert with Macs they're becoming increasingly prevalent in my trade so I'm going to invest in one for home.

I've seen a few on Gumtree I'm considering getting second hand but like I say, I'm not that knowledgable on these machines. Could someone please give me some tips on what I should look out for before purchasing, such as -

    • Any common hardware faults I should look out for?
    • Are there any status screens etc I should ask to look at
    • How about ensuring the machine is de-linked from any of the existing owners accounts?

Many thanks in advance for any help, these are quite a large investment, even second hand, so I'd like to avoid be scammed or ripped off!

Will Apple release new versions of MBP this October?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2018 09:53 AM PDT

How likely is it that Apple will release new versions of MBP this October? I am in need of an upgrade and willing to wait until after October for a new 2018 MBP, however only if they are likely going to release it.

With the backlash from the current MBP's butterfly switches, design and the busy lineup for their other products, it is not that far-fetched that Apple would take a year off to rework their keyboard design. And that is what I currently believe. However Apple have consistently released new MacBook version every year in the past. And a lot of people that I get in touch with also think there will be a new 2018 MBP line up this year.

Should I wait for a new MacBook to be released? How likely do you think Apple going to do it this year?

Expected Price Adjustments after MBP2018 Releases?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2018 08:41 AM PDT

Do we have any fair assumptions we can make on the extent to which current models will go down in price when the 2018 MBP drops? I've seen some conflicting info on this so far. Thank you!

ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - No 4k@60hz under MacOs

    Posted: 19 Jun 2018 04:27 AM PDT

I Just got a new MacBook Pro (2017, Radeon Pro 560), along with a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock.

I choose this dock, because i read that it does work with a mac.

But the dock's display outputs are not fully usable under MacOs. Under Windows 10, everything works as it should, 4K@60hz, or dual (FHD/4K@30hz) monitors, but under MacOs, the best i can get is a single monitor at 4k@30hz. If i plug in another monitor i just get a mirrored image. I'm using display port cables that where previously used with these monitors.

The Display settings sometimes show the 30hz refresh rate, but the dropdown is greyed out, sometimes it doesn't even show up.

The monitor is an LG 27UD58

I tried a few utilities to force a higher refresh rate but non had any effect. I tried the Thunderbolt unblocker utility, even tho this dock is not blocked, so sadly this had no effect either. I update the firmware of the dock from windows, it had no effect.

One interesting thing is that under System Information -> Hardware -> Graphics/Displays -> Radeon Pro 560 -> LG Ultra Hd there is this line: Connection Type: DVI or HDMI But i'm clearly using displayport cables.

I'm terribly disappointed because my previous MacBook (2014) could easily drive 2 4k displays at 60hz, with a cheap cable. For this, apple does not even offer a first party solution for connecting 4k@60hz displays, and it seems 3rd party docks are hit and miss, the apply endorsed Belkin dock have more negative reviews than positive, so i'll probably steer clear of that one as well.

What are my options here? Can this be solved or returning it is my only choice? What other docs are worth considering?

(My ideal dock has at least 3 USB3 A ports, ethernet, display port and charging capability)

I accidentally dropped my MacBook Pro on the ground. Is there anyway I can check to see if the performance has been diminished or if anything has been damaged?
