The Apple Store Genius Bar Broke /u/SnazzyLabs $5,000 iMac Pro

    Posted: 25 May 2018 10:13 PM PDT

    Video

TL;DR: Attempted to install Apple's VESA mount to his iMac Pro, a screw broke off. Apple Support on the phone said they couldn't do anything and referred him to the Genius Bar. Genius Bar takes 2 weeks to "fix" it, mangling the iMac's stand. 24 hours later, he checks to see if the Apple Store broke anything. He then broke a screw, bringing him back to square one.

Apple Begins Selling Refurbished Apple Watch Series 3 Models With LTE

    Posted: 25 May 2018 09:01 AM PDT

For those that got the Apple Watch with LTE, did you end up actually using it?

    Posted: 25 May 2018 07:22 PM PDT

I got one at launch and I like it and make every excuse to use it, but I'll be honest and say I barely ever use it to the point it's worth $14 a month for its own internet. Sometimes I'll turn off my iPhone and be like "oh look. My watch has signal!" But that's it. Trips to the store are kinda nice and even the gym but even then, it's not something I really care that much to have. Not as much as I had hoped.

At the gym I usually go to I get good signal on my phone, but on my watch I either get 1 bar or none at all so clearly the Apple Watch has crappier reception which makes it even less useful. And the fact that I can't even check my bank account balance with Bank of America really sucks. I'll have to pull out my phone anyway.

The battery life on lte makes it drain really fast too. I'll leave the house with a full charge and not even use my watch for anything really. Just a trip to the store and come back and it's already down 10%.

All in all I'm kinda in the middle. It's a neat feature to have, but when you weigh in the usefulness of it with the crazy $14 a month I have to pay for mine and my wife's watches ($28 for internet plan we never really use. Wow) I'm probably going to just cancel the plan and use it as a regular WiFi Watch.

What about you guys? Curious to know how other people are enjoying theirs

    Apple’s Business Goal (1987)

    Posted: 25 May 2018 08:16 AM PDT

Earlier this week – thanks to this sub, I think – I fell across an Apple document from 1987 titled Apple's Business Goal, which lists Apple's values. A photograph of the original document is available at the wonderful DigiBarn Computer Museum.

As an educator focused on helping small, purpose-focused businesses launch and thrive, I found the document's emphasis on core values invaluable. I took the time this afternoon to transcribe it so that it's easier to read.

I hope others find it useful. If you think a PDF version would be useful, too, leave a comment and I'll organise one.

    The document's available here.

Castro 3 has added trimming the silence option. Now it is complete and the best option for podcasts on iPhone (IMO). What do you all think?

Reset Face ID with a white background

    Posted: 25 May 2018 06:01 PM PDT

I've had the X for a few months and noticed FaceId was slow. A friend said to reset it with a white background. Works much faster now!

10/10 would recommend, do one straight on and another at a lower angle.

You think you need your iPhone to show the battery percentage but you really don’t

    Posted: 25 May 2018 04:48 AM PDT

My tip: turn it off. When you turn it off you'll realise you didn't need that information after all. After turning it off I actually feel better about my phone battery because I can't notice how it is drained. It actually feels like it lasts longer. Also, these numbers take up some space so your screen is cleaner on the whole. The change seems unimportant but it actually has a positive effect.

First of all the keyboard can't use the space bar and the screen is so weird that I can't even read any text properly. Apple customer support won't help since it's out of warranty

Apple Commemorates Memorial Day With 'Remembrance Table' at Apple Park

What if Apple switched the touchbar to be a part of the massive trackpads that now are on the macbooks?

    Posted: 25 May 2018 01:45 PM PDT

Having the trackpad or atelast parts of it as a screen that activates via a gesture, would save space where the bar is currently, or even be able to reimplement the functionkeys.

Market is undervaluing Apple’s service business: Apple’s self-driving partnership may be the next step of Apple’s service

    Posted: 26 May 2018 01:29 AM PDT

It's reported that Apple is providing software for automaker partner Volkswagen recently after it readjusts its self-driving dream, resigning to work with Volkswagen after earlier negotiations with several automakers fell through — in part because Apple was hesitant to relinquish control over the vehicle design.

To interpret this cooperation, in addition to consider it as Apple's self-driving car ambitions around vehicle design, investors could also view Apple's new Volkswagen partnership as another investment in the hardware giant's growing services business, written in FuninUSA. Apple is leaving money on the table by failing to capitalize on the growing subscription economy. A long-term self-driving software play might make up the difference.

Apple's software and services segment — the App Store, Apple Care, Apple Pay, iTunes and cloud services — has been a particular growth point for the iPhone maker in recent years.

Morgan Stanley said this week that the market is undervaluing Apple's services business, predicting the company's services business will represent 67 percent of Apple's sale growth in the next five years, according to report in FuninUSA.

"The concept of an autonomous service is a departure from Apple's current hardware and content services business," said venture capitalist Gene Munster. "Specifically, delivering their experience through third party hardware is a strategy that Apple rarely employs," Munster added. Apple will finally partner their way to autonomy. Any resulting Apple-Volkswagen vehicle, Munster said, is likely to yield an "Apple-like experience," reported in FuinUSA.

"Autonomy is one component of optionality that is currently not reflected in Apple's share price along with AR, original content, and health," Munster said.

    2001 Titanium PowerBook G4 vs 2017 iPhone X

    Posted: 25 May 2018 02:13 PM PDT

I'd been wondering for a while about the difference between the original TiBook G4 (my first Apple computer was the 550Mhz TiBook) and last year's iPhone X so I spent some time over lunch putting together a comparison of the two.

Here's the image export from the Keynote table: https://imgur.com/gallery/StDJrgf

    Some funny stuff

    • headphone port
    • could've looked up the GFLOPS benchmarks for the PowerPC vs Bionic
    • couldn't find a reasonable way to compare the two GPUs
    • that 56K modem
    • look at those displays
