Advice on what Experimental Features to enable in Safari to speed up browsing Posted: 02 May 2018 08:10 PM PDT I've dabbled in the "experimental features" section of Safari for a few months now and noticed that some of them seem to speed up the browsing experience, while others counteract that and slow it down. If I enable all of them my computer heats up and the browsing speed slows down. If I disable all of them it seems to run a little slower than having a few enabled. If I just wanted to maximise browsing speed which ones should I enable and which should I leave disabled? [link] [comments] |

Mechanical hard drive portion of Fusion drive is failing? Posted: 02 May 2018 05:24 PM PDT https://i.imgur.com/FHTeufc.png Was using a family member's 27" Late 2012 iMac today. I ran the SMART utility CrystalDiskInfo on it's Bootcamp partition and saw CAUTION uncorrectable sectors. I rebooted into OS X and ran Disk Utility and it showed the drive as healthy. I downloaded the trial version of DriveDX and it shows the mechanical portion of the driving is failing. This is a 3TB fusion with a 128GB SSD. As far as I know, because it's a CoreStorage Logical Volume, the drives are co-dependant. If one fails, all the data is gone. I don't know about the new drives but I believe this "fusion" is still a separate SSD and HD. Everything on this computer is backed up but I wonder how long it will last? Replacing the drive in this machine is a pita. [link] [comments] |

Finally switching from iPhoto to Photos - Photos imported years-old photos from Photo Stream Posted: 02 May 2018 07:44 PM PDT Here is the problem I am trying to solve: Currently, I have an iPhone, and iPad, and a MacBook Pro. My kids also have an iPhone each and an iPad they share, all under my iCloud account using aliases. All have Photo Stream enabled but keep their own local Camera Roll. I have always kept the master copy of my photo library in iPhoto and manually synced my devices, processed the photos into Events, and synced the organized library back to my devices. This works well because I don't want all the random selfies and screenshots my kids take in my master library, but I still get to see what they're taking pictures of. Everyone's stuff is separate and everyone is happy. Now, I want to be able to manage my library on all of my devices (my iPhone, iPad, and laptop), while still keeping the kids' stuff segregated. Here is how I thought this would work: I synced my devices to iPhoto one last time, made sure my iPhoto library was exactly as I wanted it imported into Photos and all my devices' libraries were identical to avoid any conflicts when creating my iCloud Photo Library. I then imported my iPhoto library into Photos. I did not enable iCloud in Photos at first because I still wanted my iPhoto library to be my system photo library while I made sure everything was as I wanted it in Photos. This step worked fine. There was one random Event (now an album) that imported about a thousand more pictures than it should have (these were all previously deleted), but I figured that was a one-off glitch and I took the time to re-delete all the interlopers and spot-checked several other albums to ensure that behavior wasn't repeated. Next, I wanted to see how good the facial recognition was. I saw that Photos would only process faces when the app was closed and my computer was plugged in, so I quit Photos and walked away for a couple of hours, figuring that should be long enough to process at least enough photos to give me a sense of the feature. Lo and behold, when I opened the app back up, not only had Photos set itself as the system library, it had also turned on iCloud and started downloading my entire Photo Stream into my library. I take and delete a lot of pictures from my Camera Roll, so my Photo Stream is always full of rejects, as well as the aforementioned nonsense from my kids. This irritated me but I figured I could solve the problem by creating a Smart Album for all photos that weren't in any albums, as I had organized my photos 100% into Events so any loose photos would have to be the Photo Stream ones and could be safely deleted. This had already been my plan for how I would deal with the kids' stuff once I upgraded to iCloud Photo Library. Here is what actually happened: I now see numerous photos in my Photos library that are years old. Random screenshots, webcomics and gifs I saved to my Camera Roll to be able to text to people, burst photos I had already pared down to the shots I wanted, etc. I don't even know how these photos got in there. I assume they came through Photo Stream, but many of them are so old they don't even show up in my Photo Stream album on any device, including the Photo Stream album in Photos. They're just there in my All Photos album. Not only that, but they don't even all show up in my Unfiled smart album. I know they aren't in any of my Events albums because these are all pics I've deleted over the years, so I can't imagine what album the app thinks they're a part of and there's no way to reveal that metadata. Has anyone else experienced this behavior? It makes me physically ill to think that hundreds or thousands of random photos that have passed through my Photo Stream over the years may now be mixed in with my carefully curated library, and there's no way for me to identify and remove them. Further, as I understand it I can't safely upgrade to iCloud Photo Library until I solve this issue, because even though my iPhone and iPad libraries match, if I enable iCP on my MacBook it will merge its library, which will now include who knows how many pictures I don't want. As far as I know there is no way to created my iCP with my phone or iPad and then tell my MacBook that version is "truth" and any photos in its library that don't match should be eliminated. Am I misunderstanding how iCP works entirely? What happens to pictures that are in your Photo Stream but not your master library when you turn on iCP? Do they disappear or are they forced back in? And why would turning on Photo Stream have resurrected all these random years-old photos anyway? If you've read all this I really appreciate your time. [link] [comments] |
Apple watch used as a swim tracker Posted: 02 May 2018 08:55 PM PDT Hi all, I am an owner of an iphone6s, recently I am looking at wearable devices to buy, so that I can track my calories while swimming at the gym. My question for you guys is, anyone here ever use apple watch to track swimming? If you do, how is it? [link] [comments] |
Does anyone have a copy of OS X 10.5 Leopard? Posted: 02 May 2018 08:38 PM PDT I'm trying to fix up an old 2006 iMac. I want an older OS, so that it will run a little faster. If this kind of post isn't allowed, I'll take it down. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2018 11:28 AM PDT Does anyone else have issues when playing games in an iPhone X? There are a few swipes I have to do from the bottom of the screen to change a weapon, and my app keeps closing as if I was trying to close it. (Landscape) The bar doesn't really disappear from the bottom. Is this an issue with Apple's design or the developer? Does anyone know how to work around it? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 May 2018 10:18 PM PDT These are my daily sunglasses and Face ID just doesn't work. Is it because they're polarized? Something else specific to Ray Bans? I remember hearing Face ID would work fine with sunglasses but this is not what's happening here [link] [comments] |

Computer Chronicles on A/UX, Apple's UNIX that ran Mac OS software in 1989 Posted: 02 May 2018 01:23 PM PDT Found this browsing retro computing videos today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nId-Nsj5OX4 As the title says, A/UX was Apple's UNIX for the Mac IIcx. It could run both UNIX and regular Mac OS software. Eventually it was discontinued but history did in a way repeat itself: Apple's eventual successor to Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, is a proper UNIX that initially came with a compatibility layer for classic Mac apps. Is there a legit keyboard that offers a number row along with all the other features? Posted: 02 May 2018 02:05 PM PDT Switching from android, the thing that I've missed the most is the customisability of keyboards. I'm using Swiftkey for now, but the iOS version is so much more limited compared to android (i.e. no resizing possible, no number row, auto-spacing is not as good etc). So I am wondering if there's a keyboard that exists which can add the number row but also keep essential features such as Swype. I tried googling but was not able to find a verifiable result. Thanks [link] [comments] |
