    Wired/Wireless Earbuds

    Posted: 12 Feb 2018 12:07 PM PST

I have been looking around for good earbuds but have been getting mixed reviews. I would like some recommendations that will be compatible with my iPhone 7 and iPad Pro 10.5. My ideal budget is under $99.

Edit: I am planning on getting AirPods as soon as my parents allow me to get a job (I am a minor). Until then, I have been working Urban League every summer and making $400+, which I have to spread around.

Apple ipad (2017) vs ipad mini 4. Which to buy?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2018 11:30 AM PST

Which one should i buy. The cost of both is fine for me. I kind of like the size and lighter weight of the ipad mini 4 but i understand the processor is only A8 vs the A9 in the ipad 2017. Which would you recommend? Is the ipad 2017 lightweight enough to walk around with? Does the A9 processor make a hige difference? Is there a ipad mini 5 planned for release in the near future?

Would now be an okay time to purchase an iPad Pro? Or should I wait?

I'm a student and realized how much easier my life would be with an iPad Pro + Pencil for school work.

I did some Googling and apparently, a refresh is possible anytime between March and June. What do you guys recommend?

Switching from MacBook Pro to iPad [PART 2]

    Posted: 11 Feb 2018 11:14 PM PST

Hey everyone! As some of you know I made a post regarding my transition from MacBook Pro to iPad Pro and I listed my overall thoughts about it, in the end I wasn't exactly sold on making the switch - however with a completely different approach I gave it another shot and here is my secondary concluded thoughts :) It's pretty long! So I've made a conclusion at the end for the lazy!

So what did I do differently?

I bought the Logitech Slim combo keyboard instead of the Apple smart keyboard. Honestly, this is a LARGE difference when it comes to using the iPad Pro and you're probably thinking "what, its just a keyboard swap?" - I'll explain just hang on. While the Smart Keyboard has a few great features such as:

    • It's minimalist design. I love holding the iPad caseless, its premium feel and aesthetics just remind you of the well deserved craftsmanship/design.

    • The keyboard typing experience is actually pretty decent, while I will say it is a bit 'firm', its still a pleasantly surprisingly enjoyable typing experience (take this from someone who has used mech kbs for years). One thing note mentioning is just how nice and firm the keys feels, they don't feel wobbly at all.

    • The cover feels quality, its expensive but you definitely "some-what" feel like you are getting your money's worth.

    Now why I prefer the Logi slim combo?;

    • That function row. It seriously changes the way you use your iPad Pro. Rather then reaching your arm every time to change the volume, you can juts hit it on the keyboard, rather then just hitting that home button twice to alter your brightness, you can just tap it on the keyboard. You don't realise how much you use it until you have it.. Speaking of that home button, sick of reaching up to hit it? Just tap on the home button on the top left corner of the keyboard. This is honestly a game changer, when multi-tasking espeacially.

    • That multi-angle hinge. One thing I really hated about the Smart Keyboard was the lack of multiple angles, having multiple angles makes this much more versatile and allows you to place your iPad in places that you simply couldn't due to the smart keyboards single angle. Not to mention you can take off the keyboard and still use that back rest to support the iPad when watching movies in optimal angles.

    • The extra key travel does feel great and makes typing on it after a few hours much more pleasant then when I had to on the Smart Keyboard.

    • Backlight is actually really useful at night. I'm a touch typist and can type without seeing but there are times at night when I just want to look at the keyboard before I start typing and having a backlight just makes it easier.

    • Optional wrist rest!

    • A pen holder! Although I cut mine off [for aesthetics.]

Now, the Logi combo case isn't perfect and there are a few things I really don't like about it.

    • I hate how its plastic construction feels cheap on the back.

    • I hate how the part that I rest under my keyboard ends up being the same thing that goes back on my screen, It often gets dirty and collects a lot of lint too.

    • Why is there a lock button? It's annoying. They should have put the Home button there and put an ESC key where the home button is.

    • the overall build quality does NOT feel like its price that you pay for, I have second thoughts about how long this actual keyboard combo will last to be honest.

    • Aesthetically, it doesn't look the best, the keyboard part looks perfectly fine, its the back cover. If I saw that back cover sold separately in a store I'd probably have thought it was a cheap $10~15 cover.

It really does come to form vs function. If I had to pick one obviously I'd go for the Logitech, but if I didn't need to type as much and was more focused on using the pencil/hand-input and was perfectly fine with the one angle - I'd definitely go with the Smart Keyboard.

    1. I realised not everything requires an application on the iPad Pro. Sometimes, its just simply better to use Safari or any other web browser. I spent so long looking for a good app for Reddit and while Narwhal was fantastic I realised it was just easier to use Safari, just like how I also downloaded an app for Amazon, eBay etc.. It was easier and better to use them in the browser. That being said, finding the right apps for your main aspects was also just as important. These are the list of apps that I use from day-to-day:

    2. Note-taking: Notability

    3. Browser: Safari (Puffin if I need flash) [Adblock installed for Safari]

    4. PDF reader: Adobe Acrobat / Liquid Text (lite)

    5. Reports: MS Office suite / Apple suite / G-Suite. (Used to multi-task).

    6. Calculator: PCalc (lite)

    7. Weather: WeatherZone (pro)

    8. Mail.

    9. Blackboard.

    10. Others: Netflix, YouTube, Commbank and iMovie, sometimes I open up Narwhal.

    11. All of apples first party apps (Reminders, Calendar, iBooks, News, Apple Music) etc.

Now I did mention that I could not multi-task as well because of the lack of apps that support tabbing and opening another instance from the same application, and I still find this a pain in the ass. Some apps like LiquidText offer it as a pro option ($46.99 AUD) just to let you open other tabs and personally I find that irritating and a slap in the face to consumers. I shouldn't have to spend that much money for basic functionalities. I'm happy to support developers, but at a reasonable cost. Yes I agree when purchasing an iPad Pro, there are a lot of hidden costs that come after with the software, nothing is free espeacialy for polished apps but it makes it hard to sway people into joining the iPad life when you have to recommend they spend another $~50 on apps afterwards.

    1. I've used a lot of accessories that help aid the iPad Pro experience. Some accessories are a 'nice to have' and some are 'MUST'.
    • A faster charger. I use the 61w that I had extra for my MacBook Pro before I sold it, had to buy a lightning->USB-c from Apple (That price tag though), but it was damn worth it. Charging times are ridiculously quicker.

    • A fast car charger. Also got a Belkin (24w) from Apple and this is AWESOME to charge on the go. Surprisingly well priced.

    • Sandisk lightning hard-drive (32gb). It's a must for me.

    • Amazon dock for pencil to charge. Super convenient.

    • Those random things from Amazon that just tie the cap of the pencil to the pencil or tie the adapter to a cable, the little things like these that just help make your life easier by not worrying about losing any of these.

    • AirPods. Ok, these are expensive and obviously not for everyone, I managed to get mine on a 20% off discount - but if i had known previously, I would Save up and buy them for the 100% price. These are magical. Not a must but they make life seriously easier.

    • Steelseries Nimbus. This makes the iPad an actual fun competitor for gaming. Playing games like GRID Autosport actually feels super fun and the controller feels great. Found it online for 50% off from several sites, definitely reccomend this! It's such a bonus that it charges via lightning too. Keep in mind, many games don't actually support it so make sure first!

    • Power bank with a lightning input, I use an AUKEY 20,000 mah bank and it is super convenient just having EVERYTHING charge by a lightning cable. (Still would have preferred it all usb-c)

    1. I sold my MacBook Pro for my iPad .... But I may have purchased a Mac Mini.. No I did not lie, I still technically replaced my MacBook Pro setup with an iPad Pro.. But yes at the cost of me having to purchase a secondary device (used 2012 Mac mini) that I got really cheap of eBay. I would have loved to COMPLETELY use the iPad Pro as my main device but there are just some things you cannot replace with the iPad which is why I only use it 80% of the time, but those 20% of the times are still super important.
    • Not being able to dock the iPad is still seriously an issue. These days its so common to have a setup where you can just plug'n'play into an versatile ergonomic setup. Mobile devices (laptops/tablets) have reached that point in life where they basically possess the performance of a desktop, (obviously this doesn't apply to niche markets with heavy workstation users/servers etc).. It's ergonomically painful to sit on an iPad for hours, even with the best chair/desk in the world money can buy - it just makes sense to have a Monitor and external peripherals, your health is a worthwhile investment - Not only that but moving onto larger screen with more realestate which means more room for productivity/gaming/leisure whatever you're doing.

So the Mac Mini excels in obvious places such as when it comes to writing a report/project for me, I need to use multiple documents/excels/pdfs and have a larger screen to be productive. It's not over-complicated using an iPad Pro, its just unnecessary - I shouldn't have to compromise constantly. Having to use required software from university that simply won't run on an iPad, trying to print a paper in a certain way other than the limited options on the iPad. That one file that just won't open on the file, trying to download this or that? There are a lot of quirks that you do in everyday computing without realising that can be cumbersome on an iPad.

There are somethings the Mac will never be able to do on an iPad and vice versa. The Mac mini is a cheap alternative (upgradeable too), that closes the gap for when I need a computer, when I graduate - chances are I'll sell it and have the iPad full time if work doesn't require it.

Again, this doesn't apply to everyone, this is just my scenario however I feel like I somewhat speak for majority of users out there in school/University, or someone in the workforce who does a lot of work with office suites (MS/google/apple).

What's a few things I STILL hate about the iPad Pro?

    • What the heck is with the CMD+TAB? Why are you showing me apps that I closed last night. Why can't you just show me apps that I've actually got open.

    • Safari needs a desktop only mode.

    • Built in calculator/weather app.

    • Please push developers to allow multiple tabbing/instances. Not this $46.99 bullshit.

    • Speaking of developers. Have you seen Facebook/Official Reddit on the 12.9 iPad? They look terrible.. How long has it been since launch and we are still awaiting for optimisation for basic scaling, something you shouldn't expect from such large parties.

    • Files. It needs a makeover with more details.

    • Please please please. Just make a keyboard like Google Pixel C with smart connector. It literally offers the best of both worlds from Logi Slim combo + Smart Keyboard.

*Apple Pencil is due for a refresh, it would be nice to see colour options, buttons that assist in software, and a battery that lasts one year opposed to charging it over night - basically a Surface pen with the Apple Pencil drawing capabilities.

What made me stick with the iPad in the end??

Once I returned my iPad, I pulled out my Mac + pen/paper and grinding a few hours of study made me impulse purchase another one immediately. The way you use the iPad Pro is magical for studying. My handwriting is terrible but this is what I mean, just typing then pulling out the pencil and drawing just feels so efficient and great. The large screen and (gorgeous quality) makes reading articles feel pleasant and again as mentioned just engaging with the screen somewhat keeps me awake. It's like driving a manual car after driving automatic for so long - hard to explain but I'm sure you folk at /r/iPad have every idea what I'm talking about.

Not only that, just in general use - its so much more engaging to use your hands or a pencil on the screen, swiping, gestures, dragging/dropping - it just feels so much more fun to use for such boring daily tasks (when it all works smoothly!). Laptops have gotten so stale to me, trackpad and desktop OS just feels boring espeacialy Mac OS its looked the same since I first touched it YEARS ago. Heck, when I opened up the Mac Mini it was running Mavericks and it felt identical to high sierra, that was released 5 years ago. It's most probably just me but at the end of the day we all view technology differently, to me the iPad feels like the future of computing along with other Windows touch 2-in-1s. Being able to just pull off the keyboard, get in bed and binge watch some Netflix then throw it in my bag and wake up next morning and off I am at 8:30 am with the same device drawing drawing up some work for a project.

Would I reccomend the iPad Pro?

    It depends.

If you don't plan on using the Apple Pencil? Immediately a no in my opinion. If you want a basic computer that does basic tasks like browsing, emails, blogging etc. I'd rather reccomend the 12" MacBook or any other Chromebook/Windows ultra-book. If you require certain software or have a heavy multi-tasking workflow and want to replace your entire setup then also a no. If you want to use it to supplement your current machine? That sounds more like it, with the intention of using the pencil - then yes I would say so. You want a tablet first for just general tablet usage, bit of gaming, bit of media - I'd reccomend the iPad that Apple sells for 1/4~1/3 the price of the Pro unless you truly want the optimal experience from that display/speaker/performance upgrade.

I would reccomend this to people who take advantage of the Apple Pencil, Whether its drawing/artist work, engineering plotting, streaming to a screen and doing teacher work in front of students, or if you're a student and want to do your hand-written notes by side with your text, construction management, etc the possibilities are endless. You also have to be in a mind frame willing to adapt and change your workflow, something I think I failed the first time I purchased it.

That being said, the Surface line-up is also amazing and are definitely worth checking out too if you are ever considering an iPad Pro, they have a lot of advantages/disadvantages over the iPad Pro but that's a talk for another day! Honestly I have to say, if I wasn't invested in the Apple ecosystem and if Apple didn't have killer features like ProMotion or the slight edge in the pencil functionality as well as iOS optimisation - I probably would have gone with a Surface Pro as that can truly replace my laptop and still be able to dock to an external monitor/run multiple documents etc.

Anyway, it seems most people enjoyed the first "review", I hope you all enjoyed this one and that I answered some questions for people who have been thinking about switching to an iPad Pro full time.

TLDR: Swapped my Mac for an iPad. Regretted it. Returned the iPad, immediately missed it and bought another one, sold my MacBook Pro and bought a cheap used mac Mini to close the gap. Approached it with a different mentality and now I'm sold on the Pro as my "main" machine. (80% of the time adleast).

To Word users : Why no iCloud integration?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2018 01:18 PM PST

So I decided to stop using Pages for compatibility reasons and so far it's OK on the iPad but all my stuff is on iCloud and really I don't want to migrate everything to OneDrive or Dropbox. So I just want to be able to access my iCloud Drive directly from Word but it seem there is no integration, for some reason.

You can see some screenshots here of what I mean : https://imgur.com/gallery/1pEHc

Any of you know how to integrate the iCloud Drive in the Word menu?

    Thanks a lot !

The best thing I read today for upcoming iPad software enhancements!

    Posted: 12 Feb 2018 05:44 AM PST

This is the butter of it

Consumers will have to wait until 2019 for significant iPad-focused software upgrades. Among them: A feature that will make it possible to run several windows in one app and click between them just like tabs in a web browser (the Mac got this feature a couple of years ago) and a related enhancement that lets two screens from the same app run side-by-side. Other updates that have been pushed back include new features for the Apple Pencil stylus and a toggle in the email app that will mute notifications from specific threads.

Is the home button dying/failing on my iPad Air 2?? :(

    Posted: 11 Feb 2018 04:07 PM PST

Hey everyone I have an iPad Air 2 and have had this replacement model nearly a year and a half now. 🙂

And I have used and press on the home button countless many many many times for things like taking lots lots and lots of screenshots and switching in between and close apps/games things like that.

But unfortunately recently in the last 2/3 weeks every now and again the home button when I press on it mainly going from sleep to the lock screen it fails to respond and does not do anything the 1st time which I have to press it again which it does work the 2nd time round.

But I am definitely getting really really worried that the home button is dying/failing already despite me having this iPad Air 2 replacement model for only 1 year and a half. 😫🙁

So if the home button actually breaks dies in the near future then I am definitely really really screwed because I won't be able to take any screenshots and switch in between and close apps/games on my iPad.

And all so I am looking to still use my iPad Air 2 for a least until next year 2019 which in 2019 I think I will be looking and upgrading and getting a new and much more better and powerful iPad(most likely the new 2018 iPad Pro 10.5), So yeah it will definitely still be quite a long time using this iPad Air 2.

To be honest lately I have been trying to avoid using the home button every now again and not use my iPad Air 2 and use my Surface Pro 4 and my LG G6 smartphone instead because so I be able to use the home button in the future with no problems on my iPad in the future and have heard from quite a few iPad users that the home button is not very durable/strong and breaks dies easily.

And I do try to press the home button very very softly and carefully on my iPad Air 2 but every now and again I do press it hard but not too hard at times especially when taking a screenshot or switching in between and closing apps/games.

I would like to know Is the home button dying/failing on my iPad Air 2?? Is this a sign?? I really really hope not its dying/failing already!!!! 😫🙁

And if the home button actually breaks and dies is there a good alternative to the home button?? And should I take it to the place(PC World/Currys) that I bought it and get it checked out and get it repaired(I have AppleCare protection as well)?? And iPad users have you had this problem before on your iPad?? And how will I take screenshots on my iPad Air 2 if the home button breaks dies??🤔🤔

Please help, I use my iPad for school purposes and I believe the power button is broken. I need assistance on what to do and how to possibly fix my iPad!

    Posted: 11 Feb 2018 10:16 PM PST

what the title says^ My father purchased an iPad for me last year since I was about to enter high school, and since I don't have a laptop and I have very limited space on my phone, for documents and such. So I received an iPad with 128 GB of space. It's not a mini or a massive one, but more midsized, I suppose. I'm not sure of the model right this moment, but I will ask tomorrow and edit this post with the model whenever I find out. I do not have a case for the iPad. Now, I've got all the apps and tools I could possibly need for schools stuff (Google + Microsoft applications, mostly), and of course a few games here and there. So here comes the issue. About a week ago, I noticed my iPad was acting kinda wonky. Namely, with the power button. Now, trying to use my iPad is an shitstorm that makes you angrier the longer you attempt it. Here is why I believe my power button is broken:

    1. I can't turn the iPad off with the power button. The only way I can normally turn it off is by placing it face-down on a flat surface, so it will semi-quickly turn off, just like at least most other Apple products.

    2. The iPad is shut down by long-holding the home button, so the screen will go dark and the Apple logo will appear. However, when this is done, it can lost a very long amount of time and it flashes the logo in intervals of maybe 5-10 seconds. I usually have to wait for it to turn back on itself, which can take a very long time. I shut it down a few days ago, left it that way, came back home after 3 hours, and found the iPad still on the Apple logo shut-down screen. I long-held the home button and plugged in the iPad to a normal charger and it turned back on.

    3. The iPad randomly turns off, without anything pressing the power button. This can go without happening for an hour, to happening (no joke) pretty much every 5-10 fucking seconds while it is in use.

    4. Sometimes while using an application, the home button does not work so I am unable to turn my iPad off and/or exit the app. I just have to wait until it feels like working again.

    5. The "Slide to Power Off" appears all the time, whether the iPad is turned off at the moment (thus turning it back on), in use of an app, on the home screen, opening passcode, you name it. It happens about as often as the iPad turns off, which is also incredibly common.

    6. SCREENSHOTS. Using the home button to turn on my iPad or navigate through applications is a nightmarish hell due to the fact that maybe 2/3 times I try to enter my iPad (passcode) it takes a screenshot and about 1/5 times I navigate apps (double-tap) it screenshots as well.

This is mostly it. I've had my iPhone (not this iPad) for about 2 years and it's been working great, but I've had this iPad for just over 6 months or so. I've done what many websites have recommended you do for a broken power button, but none show the exact same symptoms of one as my iPad has. My iPad seems to have similar symptoms of one except they are much more exaggerated and there seem to be even more. I have no idea what to do at this point, I don't want to tell my dad since I don't know if we can afford a new one. I've got a large project coming up which I've been typing on my iPad, and I've got tons of assorted documents saved on it. And of course, online gameplay of some apps is pretty much a miracle to get through at this point. If it's not a broken power button and it's something else, please tell me. I don't know how to right now, but if necessary, I'll open it up to see if there's humidity or dust damage, or anything similar. Thanks for reading this wall of text, any and all assistance and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.
