| 1st time Mac owner looking for some advice Posted: 13 Feb 2018 06:43 PM PST Hi folks, as my title states I'm completely new to Mac's. My father gave me his iMac as him and mom don't use it anymore. Being a PC fan I am used to formatting and reinstalling to get a fresh clean unadulterated setup. I did a quick search and read an apple help page that said to use command and r while rebooting to get the utility menu to come up so that I could initiate the install. Well I can't seem to make that work. I don't get that screen at all. So that's my first issue. My second issue/question is can I put anything newer on it other than 10.6? This is what is currently on it and there are no updates left to do. Ultimately I am wanting to get to the most up-to-date Mac OS that I can with it. I believe it is an imac 8? I wanted to get iMessage/facetime on it so I could message my daughter that has an iPhone. I know I could use Facebook messenger or other options but I am wanting to experience Apple. Any suggestions or tips for me would be appreciated. [link] [comments]  |

| MacBook Pro (2015) not charging. Posted: 13 Feb 2018 09:54 PM PST After plugging in my MacBook the light on the MagSafe didn't come on. After researching and attempting to reset the SMC the battery eventually died. However, during all of this I attached and unattached the charger and the MacBook recognizes it and the lightning bolt appeared on the battery. The display even adjusted as if it was receiving power even though when I clicked on the batter icon it said it wasn't charging. My laptop is now dead and it will show that it is charging when the power button is pressed even thought it isn't. [link] [comments]  |

| Grayscale Accessibility Option Resets After Display Sleeps Posted: 13 Feb 2018 02:26 PM PST After enabling Use Grayscale from the Accessibility preferences, the display will change to grayscale as expected. But when the display falls asleep and I wake it back up, it reverts to color. | iPad Turns Grey and then Shuts off Posted: 13 Feb 2018 08:04 PM PST I have not used my iPad in awhile and when I go to turn it on, it does nothing. So I go to charge it, and it's been about 30 minutes and when I press the power button the screen just turns grey for a few seconds then shuts off. I tried holding down power button, power button and home button at same time, power button and volume buttons same time, and a whole bunch of other combinations but nothing solves it. The only other thing I can think of is perhaps it needs a full charge? If anyone could help that'd be great. TLDR: Havent used iPad in a few months, I charge it for 30 mins and try to turn it on and get a grey screen. Tried combinations of buttons and they don't work. Might be that it needs a full charge. | How can i grant myself administrator user access? Posted: 13 Feb 2018 08:01 PM PST My computer got repaired today and as a consequence the entire HDD had to be wiped off and now my computer is as in factory settings. After starting to download pretty much everything i needed, i noticed that the repair guys changed my username to "Macbook" i tried to change it on the advanced settings on the users and groups setting on preferences. However i think i fucked up and my account is now a standard one rather than an admin. whenever i try to install anything, it prompts me to enter an administrator's name and password. I have tried using the "default" password the repairguys added, my new password, but nothing happens. When i tried using as username "root" and password "root" it prompts me again to enter the username and password again, and if i put root and root again, it tells me it's incorrect. How can i change myself to being an admin? i'm the only user on the computer (besides guest, which i deactivated). Please help since i can't install shit and i really wanna get steam on it back!. Shooting video in landscape makes them appear sideways. Safari won't rotate into landscape mode. Neither with any other app like Numbers or Pages. Everything is portrait. No matter what. | Posted: 13 Feb 2018 06:59 PM PST I can no longer play or record videos in my photos app. (Facebook and Snapchat apps also giving me grief and crashing but perhaps separate issue). I updated to 11.2.5 (iPhone 7) and my iCloud capacity filled up recently so its understandable if nothing else will be backed up to iCloud. (No I'm not interested in purchasing more space). But that should not affect the loading and playback of photos and videos that are on the phone itself. And I should be able to continue to record things to the phone even if it won't backup to iCloud. What gives? Also I have had a notification to review the iCloud terms & conditions and have pressed agree over and over but the notification refuses to go away. My new phone hasn't been backed up to iCloud because of this and I can only assume it's because my iCloud is full that the notification will not disappear. Because when I agree, I assume it's trying to backup media that it can't because it's full. So how do I: 1) Accept new iCloud terms and conditions even though iCloud is full? (Must be a bug from recent updates?) & 2) Continue to record and play media on my phone without iCloud capacity affecting physical phone capacity? (Also probably a bug from recent updates?) Pretty straightforward, just drag and drop the location icon (to the left of the address) to rearrange in the order of your preference. Hello /r/applehelp, Backstory: My MacBook is, when home, mostly stationary on my desk with another monitor and two external hard drives plugged in (Time Machine and Storage). I have tons of files floating around on my external hard drive (documents, videos, audio, ...) that are just rudimentarily sorted into folders and since the mess is growing, I wanted to organise a bit using tags in Finder. Halfway into tagging, I wondered if my plan would work as intended. See, when I'm not sitting at my desk, I usually access the files from my iPad, since I can move more freely that way. In the past, I have used the app File Explorer to access the SMB-share on the Mac. This doesn't support tags, I knew that. But the app has introduced integration to the Files app in iOS in one of the past updates, so I hoped for my tags (from the Mac) to sync over to the iPad. Well, they don't. So I thought of something else. I have purchased the Server app some years ago because I was tinkering around with an old Mac I had and I remembered that there was an option to create a file server with that. I also remembered adding the Mac-Server as an account in iOS to access the files. So, I downloaded the app, set the Mac up as server and looked for "File Sharing". Well... turns out, Apple removed this feature in version 5.4. Well, I thought, maybe it is enough if File Sharing is set up using the System Preferences but, who would have guessed, it doesn't work because I have no services running. Which is correct because I didn't activate any, since the one service I want doesn't exist anymore. Question: So I have these gigabytes of data, sorted into one level of folders "work", "school", "red cross", "media", ... and I want to access them from the iPad while also be able to access the tags to these files. The access is not the problem but organising them. Do you guys know a solution to this? Is there any way to access tags from the iPad without loading everything into the iCloud? Because I don't want to pay a fortune for that much of cloud storage and I wouldn't have to since everything is in the local network. When I'm on the go, I wouldn't be able to access the files because I got my MacBook with me and the hard drives are disconnected. Maybe there's another approach? Not using the tags in Finder but rather another program to organise stuff? See, I don't want to organise into a folder structure because some stuff could fit into two categories and I have overlapping stuff. Any help is greatly appreciated. | Posted: 13 Feb 2018 02:21 PM PST Title basically sums it up.. My 8 plus lags noticeably until I reset all of my settings. Even if I leave all settings as default it starts to lag after a few days. I know it's not changing because i can turn it on and off (and see the screen changing on my mac), but nothing changes on my monitor. Monitor is DELL S2418HN/NX. Last year, December 2016 - January 2017, I came to Brazil and within a week, my computer randomly shut off and restarted. Over the next two to three weeks, it continued to do so with more and more frequency until it was finally unusable (restarting every ~1min). I panicked as I tried to save the most important files and tried doing a fresh install, but nothing works. My SO is a computer programmer and he ran a lot of diagnostics but nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. When I returned to the States, my computer returned to normal. I am in Brazil now for a second visit and have been here for about a week and my computer has begun to restart by itself again. It's only happening about 2 or 3 times a day now but is starting the same trend as the last time I was here. My first inclination was that this is happening because of spotty electricity but I do not work with my computer plugged in. I charge it and then I use it until it's empty. The only other thing I could thing of is maybe the humidity? But we keep the house as cool as we can throughout the day. Has this happened to anyone? I am not sure what to try. | Trouble with Two-step verification, an iPad 3rd Gen and Apple ID. Posted: 13 Feb 2018 05:45 PM PST So it had been a while since I used my old iPad, and since been actively using it, I've gone through 2 phones. I have no trouble logging in to my MBP or my phone, but my iPad or my old iPhone 4S that stays hooked into the iHome for music (another thing we never use) keeps trying to put me through the two step verification process, but when my phone gets the code, there's nowhere in the iPad to input the code, so it stays in a weird cycle of putting in the password, verification alert, code notification, nowhere to put code, repeat. Looking around Apple's site has yielded no useful information, and trying to plug the iPad into my MBP results in an endless loop of me clicking "Continue" when it asks me if I want to access the iPad. I really just want to access my old iPad and use it for some business things since it's obsolete anyway. Has anyone heard of difficulties like this? I can schedule a new one by entering through the support dialog again, but I would like to be courteous and cancel the one I won't be attending. Is there a way to do this? Posted: 13 Feb 2018 03:30 PM PST I dropped it in the toilet... jinxed myself because early on that day I said I was always afraid of dropping my phone from my back pocket. The top of my iPod is dim. Little areas at the top are dark. Sometimes my lighting keeps on getting darker and brighter. The scrolling is also freaking out sometimes. The keyboard sometimes glitches. That's it for now. I'm not sure what else is wrong with my iPod. Update: my sound is stuck on headphones. Update2: the flickering from bright o dark is horrid. The key board is skipping over some alphabets. I can't use t without having auto correct. Can't use some others as well. Update3: Flickering has stopped and I can type normally now. Scrolling is still a problem. | Posted: 13 Feb 2018 09:19 AM PST i don't understand. some albums/songs just refuse to download. no rhyme or reason either -- some are songs in a playlist, sometimes just songs on an album. internet connection is fine. have reset network settings, logged in/out of icloud, turned apple music library on and off... no help. this is so incredibly frustrating it makes me want to move to Spotify.
