    A year in r/AppleWatch - 2018 + Awards

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 06:57 PM PST

    Whew! What a year.

While I'm sure it's been a massive year for all of you, it's also been a big year for r/AppleWatch. Starting at just 38441 subscribers, we're now at just over 70 thousand; that's about double the people here at the end of this year than at the start. And it certainly doesn't look like it's slowing down anytime soon (see total subscribers tab). In late December, I joined the mod team and have, hopefully, brought about considerable change. We invited two new mods - u/ItzADino and u/Aarondo99 who continue to improve the subreddit.

In early April, we ran a user survey that provided us with invaluable data about how to improve the subreddit. That was, of course, after the April Fools 'joke' (capitalising every title and adding 'AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH' at the start of it). We received a bunch of feedback to fire the person who came up with it. Uhm... totally not me. Awkward.

In September, we held our live thread for the Apple Event, where over one thousand people joined in at once to hear some commentary upon the event. We're looking forward to doing more stuff like this in the coming year!

With complaints about content, we've begun to look at ways of introducing creators and developers onto the platform to 'spice it up'! We invited the Cardiogram developers for an AMA in November, which received a decent amount of activity and proved to us that the concept would work. Just a few days ago, we invited the CARROT developer for an AMA, which received a lot of activity. We'd like to just thank the developers for taking some time to answer the community's questions. We'll be looking into more creators and developers to bring on, so if you have a suggestion, pop it in the thread's comments!

And now it's the end December! One year since radical change began for r/AppleWatch. Since many of you weren't here one year ago, here's a snapshot of r/AppleWatch from the 2nd of October, 2016. We think this is a massive departure from what we had before, and we can't wait to continue improving upon it in 2018.

    Awards

Last year we held the upvote awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. All winners will receive a similar 2017 upvote award flair! Without further ado, here are the winners for the upvote awards:

1st: TIL you can auto-complete Scribbles on your watch. by u/jamesvdm.

A in a bit of an unexpected turn of events, this post takes top spot for 2017 just days before the new year. A useful tip for anyone who texts or otherwise inputs text through scribble on Apple Watch.

2nd: Turns out my plunger has LTE by u/Pyrorunner

Apple Watch Series 3 LTE versions come with a red dot to show off to your friends that you have the newest Apple Watch. It just so happens that this plunger also has undiscovered LTE capabilities. While it was given gold, it just missed out on the gold upvote award.

3rd: Christmas is coming up and I've been practicing for my "Joined the Club" post. by u/PocketfulOfWaffle

A cheeky parody of the standard wrist shots, car shots, and device shots that this subreddit receives. Again, a bit of a shock considering this post is just 9 days old at the time of this post's submission, but a funny post nonetheless.

And that's about it for this year. Thanks so much for joining us in 2017 - and we hope to see you in 2018.

My Apple Watch didn’t say happy birthday to me :(

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 08:15 AM PST

So I got my first Apple Watch a month ago and I've been loving it. I am a really lonely person and today is my birthday so I was hoping at least the watch would say it to me but it didn't :(

How do I fix it? I checked my birthday and it's the correct date

Is anyone still having issues with the Workout app on the Series 2?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 03:05 AM PST

I feel like I'm going insane because of this. My Apple Watch is barely a year old and freezes for up to a minute when I open the Workouts app. When I launch it scrolling doesn't work, the app is totally unresponsive, and I've also had a time where the workout counted down but then didn't ever start.

I've tried reinstalling the Watch from scratch, not even from a backup, and have turned off the new Gym Equipment features. I've reset all settings, have it fully updated. You name it. Yet every day I have to wait, standing on the treadmill, for the Watch to come back to life.

Is this normal? Does anyone know a secret to fixing this? Is there any indication of a fix for this? Half tempted to try and get some sort of return, it really is a bad look for a device that's barely a year old, if even that.

This Sub Reddit Needs An FAQ

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 03:02 AM PST

There's always lots of posts about "why can't I find this face" etc, a community complied FAQ would definitely help, especially with all the new owners joining at Christmas and after New Years

Questions on impact to iPhone battery life

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 06:52 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I just received my brand new Apple Watch Series 3 and have been loving it so far. I have a couple of questions though about its impact on my iPhone X's battery life:

    1. I noticed that after pairing the watch, the hollowed out location symbol appeared beside the clock and remains there permanently. I discovered that it's related to the Weather app - taking away it's location permissions removes it - and disconnecting the watch from the iPhone always takes it away. Is this expected behaviour? I did some searches and found a few posts on Apple's forums but no conclusive answers.

    2. I also noticed yesterday that after its first full day of use, my iPhone had barely slept (in 14 hours of being off the charger, it was showing as in use for 12). I'm much more used to seeing 3-4 hours of use time in those 14 hours, and the only thing that's changed on my iPhone is the addition of the watch. Is this typical when adding an Apple Watch, or is this something I need to look into (possibly related to the Weather app causing the hollow location icon I mentioned above)?

    Thanks!

Getting notifications on iPhone AND watch while using iPhone

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 07:47 PM PST

I got an Apple Watch for Christmas and I'm loving it so far, but one thing is sort of frustrating me to no end.

Apple makes a big deal about the watch not showing notifications if you're using your iPhone, and vice versa. But consistently, I get Snapchat and messages notifications on my wrist while I'm using my phone. Anybody else experienced this, and know a fix? It doesn't happen EVERY time, but a lot of the time it does.

    Thanks in advance!

<HELP> What should my move goal be on my Apple Watch?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 03:24 AM PST

I've had it on 450 calories for about the past year but I'm not really achieving anything with it and rarely hit my goals, I'm 16 years old and don't do much sport or anything like that. Any help would be appreciated, thanks :D

Features I haven't figured out on my Apple Watch yet

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 03:44 PM PST

The Apple Watch has been the least Apple-like product I've interacted with. It hasn't been an entirely intuitive experience for me, and a lot of the features aren't there that I thought would be standard. I'm hoping someone can provide me with input on the following:

    • [1] I had a Fitbit that would automatically track my sleep, and take my heart rate every 30 seconds or so. Its battery lasted for 4 days on average. It didn't have much of a screen to speak of, and its Bluetooth was atrocious, but it didn't seem to kill much battery by checking heart rate frequently. I am wondering how to get the Apple Watch to check my heart rate more regularly (say, every 2 minutes, or every 5 minutes)? And will this kill battery if it's possible?

    • [2] I am wondering how to get the Apple Watch to automatically track my sleep, without any manual input. My $90 Fitbit did this superbly. It was as close to 100% accurate as possible. I do not want to have to wear my fitbit at night to get this feature.

    • [3] My girlfriend wanted to get an Apple Watch, but when I showed her the watch faces, she said "Is that it?" I have to admit I was disappointed. The watch faces feel like a beta test compilation. My girlfriend said "I just want the digital time, like any digital watch, large and across the center, with the second counter. I want it right in the middle, from left to right." I couldn't do that... Any solutions?

    • [4] Facebook messenger doesn't really work on the watch. Messages come through fine as notifications on the watch, but if I open the full watch app, the messages don't show. It takes 1-2 minutes for the new messages to move into the app. Same with if i quick reply to a Facebook message but don't do it in the full app, that sent message won't appear in my full chain of messages if I quickly go into the Facebook messenger app in the watch to see the chat history.

    • [5] My heart rate doesn't seem to go below 60 on this watch. I know on my Fitbit, I get down a bit lower when I get into deep sleep. I did some thorough testing of the Fitbit, and it was extremely accurate. Does the watch cap itself at 60?

    • [6] Are there any other guides that you'd recommend? I've tried reading and watching videos, and I keep getting pretty bad info. Apps that aren't that useful, info that I already know, 'solutions' that aren't actually solutions to my above questions, etc.

    • [7] My fitbit had a great way of graphing my heart rate. Apple's app I don't like so much, it's much harder to read. Is there an app that is streamlined (that doesn't feel bulky) that would provide better read-outs?

    • [8] The crown doesn't do anything when I twist it, if I'm already looking at the watch face. It should have a feature. It can be used to peak at the time, but once the watch face is showing, it has no function. Is there a way to give it a function while on the watch face?

For the record, I stopped wearing my fitbit months ago. It's not the greatest thing in the world, but it certainly did manage heart rate and sleep better than I've experienced with the Apple Watch thus far. The Apple Watch appears capable, so I am hoping I can improve my experience by making some adjustments.

Series 3 Cellular vs. Non-Cellular Battery Life

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 10:49 PM PST

Hey y'all, I was looking for answers to this in the sub and online and couldn't find a definite answer anywhere.

I'm looking to get a Series 3, and want to know if there is a difference in battery life between the non-cellular model and a cellular model without LTE activated/watch is always connected to the iPhone.

I'm leaning to the cellular to future-proof myself and also because I may later want to activate the cellular, but for now I would probably not activate it.

So, is the battery life much different between the two? Thanks!

    Apple Watch Charging Dock

    Posted: 31 Dec 2017 07:40 AM PST

I need to buy a second cable for when I travel. I'm considering buying this for home https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MLDW2AM/A/apple-watch-magnetic-charging-dock and throwing the original cable in my travel bag.

Does anyone have this dock? Does it work well? $79 seems a little steep...
