Opinion: All apps should make use of the swipe right to go back gesture

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 03:17 AM PDT

The swipe right to go back gesture is one of my favourites on iOS. Am I the only one going a little crazy when apps don't make use of this?

A Few Small Modifications to Improve the iOS 11 Control Center

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 03:15 PM PDT

One of the major changes Apple made in iOS 11 was the redesign of the control center. When it doesn't stutter or freeze (waiting anxiously for 11.1), the new design in many ways is an improvement over iOS 10. But I can't help but feel like a few simply tweaks would go a long ways towards making it even better.

Mind you, my photoshop skills are absolutely terrible—but hopefully what I threw together helps visualize what I'm describing.

    https://imgur.com/5dpCw7U

    The changes:

    1. Turn the volume/brightness sliders sideways instead of tall-ways. While I prefer the upright look from an aesthetic standpoint, it's impractical to have an upward and downward swipe gesture control volume/brightness in the same area that a downward swipe gesture closes the control gesture. Putting it sideways, like it has always been, will eliminate accidental changes of brightness and volume when the intention was to close control center.

    2. Screen mirroring does not need to occupy two spaces. I added night shift back next to the brightness slider, but this could be replaced with anything. The purpose of the change isn't to add night shift, but rather to not waste a space on a larger button for screen sharing that could be occupied by another button.

    3. The new now playing control is way too small for my liking; I much preferred the old way of it taking up the width of the device. My solution to this problem is to put it at the very top. The top of the section is always text, so it doesn't need to be touched, and therefore is not out of reach. Meanwhile the timeline skimmer returns, and the play/pause/skip buttons are given breathing room to avoid accidental mis-touches.

    4. Finally, in order to accommodate the music change, the four toggles are aligned in a single row below the now playing widget, as opposed to in a 2x2 quadrant on the top left. This way they're not out of reach, and they still allow for a larger now playing widget.

What do you guys think? Ignoring the amateur photoshop job, would you find these changes welcome? If not, how would you change it instead?

(also to note—there are two rows of buttons at the bottom because this is how I personally have customized my control center. From a factory install, there would only be one row, I am not suggesting two rows be the default.)

    No regulatory text for Australia!

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 07:36 PM PDT

Given our governments pretty strong environmental laws, I thought that the iPhone 8 and X would still have the regulatory text just like in Europe.

But my gf just got her new phone after upgrading from the 5. I was pleasantly surprised to see a smooth clutter free back panel that looks amazing!

Makes me even more excited for the X!

Thermal throttling on iPhone 8Plus. [X-post from /r/iPhone]

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 08:50 PM PDT

I'm noticing this more often with AR and VR related activities when my iPhone 8Plus heats up and triggers thermal throttling rather quickly. It doesn't get any warmer than my SE, however, the glass enclosure instead of aluminium makes a massive difference (in a bad way) as far as heat dissipation is concerned.

Now it's obvious that glass will not dissipate heat anywhere near as well as aluminium. My question is if any of you knows of a better method to keep the 8/8Plus cool and use graphics and cpu intensive apps longer.

Right now when I play an AR game, throttling kicks in within 2-3 minutes (now you see why it's an issue) and frame rate drops dramatically. Of course I don't have a counter but it appears somewhere within the range of 20-25. The jittering is quite noticeable too.

    Thoughts?

iPhone X: I really hope that flashlight button is customisable

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 08:26 AM PDT

Why is the flashlight button constantly on the lock screen? Why not Phone app? Why not a handoff style smart button that changes depending on what you're up to (e.g pull your phone out in low-light, it's flashlight. Pull your phone out in the car, it's maps?)

IPhone 6 GPS issue since iOS 11 update.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 03:26 PM PDT

Since I updated iOS 11, I've had constant GPS issues with maps. This happens with all map applications(Apple, Google, Waze etc).

Basically, when I type an address and look up directions, the phones gps can tell where I am and finds directions without a problem. But when I start moving, the phone doesn't know that I am moving.

I've reset location services, re-installed the OS etc. sometimes if I hard reset, it begins to work but after a day or two, it stops again.

I met a friend who has the same issue after iOS update with iPhone 6.

Was wondering if there is a permanent fix to this. So far, it's been a real pain in the ass because I travel for work and not having a reliable GPS is causing a lot of issues.

I just found out that when you tap the camera button in iMessage to send a photo, you can just drag pictures into the text conversation to instantly send them. Pretty cool!

Dunno if this is a new feature, on the latest iOS with an 8+.

iPhone 8 screen stays on indefinitely

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 07:00 PM PDT

If I press the home button or power button to check the time, the screen will stay on indefinitely 9/10 times. I've also seen it happen after a notification arrived. I haven't found a pattern yet, like listening to music, etc... but it's ridiculous.

My biggest pet-peeve with my Apple devices right now: the position of the Handoff function is not consistent between iOS and MacOS

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 04:18 AM PDT

This is especially annoying with my iPad and Macbook. The dock looks so similar, but in one case, handoff is activated from the left end of the dock, and in the other its the right end of the dock. And on iPhone its different altogether

Apparently you can now Screen Share an Apple TV to macOS

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 08:48 AM PDT

    https://i.imgur.com/wILmApB.png

Set the Camera in QuickTime Movie Recording to an Apple TV running tvOS 11.

My Apple TV is an Apple TV 4, and both my MacBook and Apple TV are wirelessly connected to the router (Google WiFi). Frame Rate is ~60fps, so it might be useful for video content which can't be displayed in the browser...

EDIT: ...assuming that it doesn't block content which requires HDCP, which per /u/caspload, it does.

My 1-year old series 2 Apple Watch is very slow after WatchOS 4. Anyone else?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 06:46 AM PDT

My watch is really laggy. I wait for a few seconds before clicking buttons on my watch or changing menus because it stalls and sometimes I just decide to leave it alone for a few minutes to catch up.

The worst is when I have a workout going and playing music from my watch to my AirPods. Just scrolling to the right to get to the music takes a while and then the buttons are frozen for a little bit before I can hit next. Sometimes it registers, sometimes not. Sometimes it skips two songs.

Does this happen for anyone else?

    iPhone X Display dilemma

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 07:09 PM PDT

https://imgur.com/gallery/eOOjZ This confuses me. According to what I read in an article, the contrast ration is measured by calculating the ration between the brightness of the brightest white screen and the darkest black screen. And because OLEDs have the ability to completely turn off pixels the contrast ratio on the Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, & Note8 is supposedly ∞ (infinity - no pun intended) . So why is the contrast ratio on the iPhone X which boasts a superior OLED screen a 1,000,000:1 . Not that it's an issue but it just confuses me.

    Thanks.

Is there anything Apple or anyone else can do to avoid the pre-order website crashes every year?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2017 11:48 PM PDT

It seems like Apple, no matter how much they try, experiences serious website issues because of the millions of people flooding in to order their new phone every pre-order season.

I wonder if a retailer like Amazon could handle that amount of traffic, and if so, I wonder why Apple hasn't farmed out this process on the backend to ensure less headaches?

Tim Cook said recently Mac Mini will be apart of Apple's future. If this is true, what do you expect from the next iteration? I think an awesome feature would be if the top of the box had wireless charging functionality.
