iPhone 14 to get biggest front-facing camera upgrade in years as Apple sets its suppliers

    Posted: 13 Jun 2022 02:01 AM PDT

The 320px (640 Pixels @2x Retina) width is officially dead for the 4 inch iPhone and iPod Touch with iOS 16!

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 11:42 PM PDT

It appears now that the 320px width is now completely broken with iOS 16 as the Lock Screen looks messed up, and even more if you're using custom widgets. This is with using any iPhone from the 8, SE 2020/2022 and the 12/13 Mini devices with Display Zoom enabled. The screen will scale as if you were using a 4 inch iPhone or iPod Touch.

But starting with iOS 16, the entire UI looks even more messed up, although this has been an issue for iOS 15 on the iPhone SE (2016) and the iPod Touch 7th Generation. The notifications look awful as the text is always cut off for the 4 inch display.

There are also a number of increasing apps that look very broken on the 4 inch screen, such as Instagram. I suspect that whenever iOS 16 is released this fall, even more apps will look broken on that 4 inch display. Websites had also been looking broken or scaled wrong since the start of 2020.

But with the release of iOS 16, this pretty much makes it official. The 320 Pixel Width (or 640 @2x Retina) is now officially dead. It's unfortunate to hear the small screen being axed by developers and Apple, but the world had clearly moved on to bigger screens at the end of the day.

    Horrible Apple Care replacement experience

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 03:50 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyones been in the same position as me.

I had phone stolen recently. Thankfully I had applecare+ for the first time in my life (phew). I filled out the claim and was approved immediately.

I'll spare you the details of how nobody had a tracking number for the replacement and couldn't locate it etc. Total mess all around.

I end up getting it and I was shocked by how they've packed it. That standard white unmared box and an unpaddded big plastic sleeve. No bubble wrap or foam. Nothing!

I thought that it will most likely have a broken screen or internal damage. I opened it (filmed the process) and there is a very obvious dent. It definitely didn't happen during transit. It looks like it was poorly refurbished. Like there was a dent and they've tried to "smooth" it out. Apple ends up telling me that UPS has claimed responsibility.

I now how to send the phone back in order to get the replacement. The email states to send it in the original or suitable packaging. I want to send it back in the same box and sleeve I received it in, but don't want to be responsible for any damage durinf transit. So I'll probably buy some bubblewrap etc.

I've asked Apple if it's normal for them to pack a phone like that and if the other replacement will be packed the same way. The person I was speaking to tells me "I don't know as I don't work in that department". I have never had a phone arrive packed like that. I wouldn't even mail a chocolate bar packed like this.

Has anyone else gone through this?

    I'm in the UK.

With iPhone 7 and 6S losing support this year, do you think the next duo like this would be the 11/Pro and XS/XR?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 06:53 AM PDT

EDIT: seems like my title was sort of misleading, since most of the replies don't talk about what i was talking about or assume that I'm insinuating that these phones will lose support soon. IM NOT SAYING THAT THESE PHONES ARE LOSING SUPPORT SOON. I'm just talking about when the times comes (like 4 years later or so), i think phones from both of those years will lose support at the same time based on a pattern that's noticeable in the previous generations, hence giving the A12 iphones an additional year of support than A13 iphones.

    ———————

iPhone 8 and X are going to lose support before these phones obv, but there's this trend of the S series iPhones losing support with the generation above them. The iPhone 5S did it, the 6S did it too.

The A12 chip is still pretty powerful, and is a lot similar to the A13, the A14 was a much bigger jump. Since iOS 15, most features require A12 and later. The 2018 and 2019 iPhones also have the same amount of RAM, and the XS/Pro models actually have as much RAM as the regular 13s. The XS/XR might be the next longest supported iPhones, don't know about the X/8 tho because they should've been the 'S' variants for the 7, but 🤷🏽‍♀️

Tldr: the 2018 and 2019 iphones are probably going to lose support at the same time, following the pattern of 2013 (5s) & 2014 (6) iphones and 2015 (6s) & 2016 (7) iphones.

Might be something to consider for those who're considering buying these phones rn, since the 11s are usually going to cost more.

The best iOS 16 feature is how much quicker and more responsive the text selection menu is

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 04:19 PM PDT

This has been a massive complaint of mine for years, and I completely gave up hope they would ever fix it. But lo and behold with iOS 16 the animations are way faster and the delay is almost completely gone. This small change makes a massive difference to the user experience.

What you usually consider very expensive when it comes to an iOS app?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 04:06 PM PDT

It is still a question for me why the average price for a mobile app is usually lower than a desktop app.

I remember days that paying $25 for a small utility application for Windows/Mac was considered a very fair price and $10 was not even considered a payment but donation.

But regarding mobile apps, the baseline is set very low from beginning and people hardly ready to pay even $20 for a full-fledged app and we have a lot of apps priced around $5.

I am wondering why it is like this and what you consider a fair payment for an iPhone app?

What was your last time payment value for an app?

Or what payment method you prefer most? Subscription or One-time premium payments?

So comparing an iphone with an A11 chip to one with an A15 chip - given the EXACT same graphics settings within a game, would the A15 actually 'look' better? Or does the upgraded chip just improve performance?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2022 08:51 AM PDT

Is the upgrade just a performance upgrade? Or are the visuals actually better somehow?

    Why I’m switching from a 13 Pro to a SE3

    Posted: 11 Jun 2022 10:57 PM PDT

I've recently decided to bite the bullet and get the iPhone SE3 256GB Midnight, and compared to my Pro Max, I think it's better in a few ways. Here's the pros and cons

    PROS:

    1. Touch-ID: The last iPhone I had was the 5S. It's a lot more reliable than having to hold my face up weirdly because I am very tall (6'4") and if I need to fix the screen, I won't lose it! (Fuck you Tim!)

2: The form-factor: Is it just me? Or was the classic 6-SE3 form factor just better. It's more compact and how many notches do you see? Zero, none

3: Fluidity: Just like my Pro Max, maybe even a bit more fluid?

    CONS

1: THICC bezels: Do I even need to explain?

2: Lack of 5.5 inch plus model: I do prefer larger screens, when I came from a 5S to XS, it was like an entire new world. I've gotten so used to big screens that going down to a 4.7 inch panel will take time to get used to. (Tim, where's our plus model??)

3: 2GB of less RAM: Actually, I take that pro back, the missing 2GBs of RAM really makes a difference

Of course I'm keeping my Pro Max, don't worry!

To all iPhone users that have an iPhone 7 or earlier you should go and buy the SE 2022!

    Posted: 09 Jun 2022 06:18 AM PDT

You will get a phone that improves on every single thing compared to the iPhone you have and for a very good price, remember that the iPhone 8 costed 699$ and now for 429$ you can get a phone with the best chip in the world,a very good battery life that lasts about the same as the iPhone 11,a camera that can record at 4K 60fps with Portrait Mode and Deep Fusion, wireless charging,5G,True Tone, improved stereo speakers, toughest glass ever in a smartphone,6-7 more years of software updates and on the same old body that you know and love.

After the news that Apple will stop the software support for iPhone 6s and iPhone 7,for me it's the best thing you can do,just sell your older iPhone for 50-100$ and buy the SE 2022,it will actually cost you just 329-379$.

Automatically separate photos by source - How I solved a problem I've had with iOS Photos for a very long time.

    Posted: 09 Jun 2022 01:16 AM PDT

While many love iOS photos and the "simplistic" nature of the recents folder, many of us loathe it.

In case you aren't aware, the "Recents" folder is a system album in the photos app that cannot be modified or deleted. It's purpose is to have a single location where the user can see ALL images and video saved to the Photos app, in chronological order.

This is all good and well, however, it can become messy very fast, and with no way to filter out images by source, separating the media taken with your phone from media like screenshots, memes from messages (or other chat apps) or even stuff downloaded from Reddit, can be a chore. I used to spend hours every week just trying to separate stuff by manually putting them into albums, and even when you do, you are never sure if you missed one as there's no way to tell what's already in an album.

That meant, every time I take a day of photos of my family/neices/nephews, I would immediately go and separate those photos into another album called "iPhone Pics" so that they aren't interrupted by some random (often inappropriate) meme received from whatsapp/messages in the Recents album.

Similarly, if I download stuff on Reddit or take screenshots, I would try to separate them at the end of the day so that they aren't randomly scattered among my other family photos in the recents album when I need them later on.

After many weeks of Googling and tweaking, I found a solution using shortcuts and modified it to suit my needs! I have always seen this being mentioned on the fringes of the Apple community, but it always seemed very daunting to me as I did not understand how shortcuts worked or how powerful it was.

    Heres what I did:

    1. I first created albums called "iPhone Pics" and "Other", with the intention to have a shortcut automatically separate pictures and video taken with my iPhone into its own album ("iPhone Pics")and media saved from other sources like Reddit into its own album ("Other").
    2. I then created two shortcuts that will:
      1. Check the relevant album ("iPhone pics" or "Other") for the most recent photo/video, then
      2. Look for all media in the recents album after that date+time
      3. Check if the image/video metadata is taken with and Apple camera or not
      4. Add them to the correct album depending on the criteria above
    3. These shortcuts were called "update iPhone pics album" and "update other album" respectively.
    4. I then used Automation in the Shortcuts app to run the "update iPhone Pics album" shortcut every time I exit the camera app, since that's naturally when iPhone pics will be created.
    5. I set the "update Other pics" shortcut to run every time I start up the photos app.

The last two automation can be set up to run silently in the background or ask each time. If you select ask each time, a banner will pop up after the trigger event but it will not run the shortcut unless you action it. You can also set it up to run based on any criteria you see fit.

Lastly, Here are the shortcuts I made in case anyone wants to try it for themselves and tweak it.

(Note, these are modified versions of a shortcut I found on the internet, so it is not completely done by be)

I decided to post this here as I thought many of you might find it helpful.

Mods: If this not allowed on this sub, feel free to delete it or direct me to an appropriate place to post.

Thanks, I hope this helps some of you from going insane like I was.

Edit 1: Please create the albums BEFORE downloading the shortcuts. If not, the shortcuts will not not find the albums I selected in your photos app and everything will revert to "recents". I wrote the tweaks poorly, I should have referenced the variable "targetAlbum" throughout, but with so much tweaking and testing I took the easiest way out.

Edit 2 : I will make changes and fixes to sort out all the issues, then re-upload the shortcuts in Edit 3...

    Edit 3 - Links updated.

Edit 4 - Bonus Shortcut… Move Photos from one album to another

Move from Album A to Album B

iOS 16 Lets You Transfer an eSIM Between iPhones via Bluetooth

    Posted: 08 Jun 2022 09:32 AM PDT

Why doesn't apple making the lightning connector spec faster? As it's still running USB 2.0 speeds.

    Posted: 08 Jun 2022 05:44 PM PDT

They refuse to change it to a faster more widely accepted connector (USB-C) the least you could do is update it a bit. It honestly seems like a waste, especially since the phones that use them have such amazing cameras that could be used for some amazing projects however hard to make use of due to the slow transfer of these shots to any pc.

A possible technical explanation why the iPhone 6s and 7 were dropped from support (at the same time) while iPads with the same chips were not dropped.

    Posted: 08 Jun 2022 03:20 AM PDT

TL;DR: iPhone 6s and 7 have the same level of power management and shutdown prevention. The performance would be fine but only with a new battery, which not many have now and may not be a worthwhile investment at this point (especially if other things are broken as well). iPads don't need to worry about that because of their big battery.

I thought much about a possible reason that they did drop support for the 6s and 7 at the same time. It was not easy but after two days something came to my mind. I upgraded from iPhone 7 because my battery was in the 60%s and the replacement would cost like 60$, which I thought I could put towards a newer and more powerful iPhone instead.

Because of the bad battery, it performed like a dog and laggy or glitchy UI was common, things like taking 5 seconds to open up the camera, then freezing when taking a picture. But that's ok and expected from a bad battery.

Many people will have the same experience now, maybe unexpected shutdowns as well, and not know that the battery is the reason for that.

The iPhone 8 improved this through hardware and software, as per Apple Support Page (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208387) „iPhone 8 and later use a more advanced hardware and software design that provides a more accurate estimation of both power needs and the battery's power capability to maximize overall system performance. This allows a different performance management system that more precisely allows iOS to anticipate and avoid an unexpected shutdown. As a result, the impacts of performance management may be less noticeable on iPhone 8 and later."

They also say about the dynamic shutdown prevention (also known from „battery-gate" and falsely accused of purposely slowing down old devices to make the users upgrade, even though it is a good thing because it prevents shutdowns) „For iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus, iOS dynamically manages performance peaks to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down so that the iPhone can still be used. This performance management feature is specific to iPhone and does not apply to any other Apple products. Starting with iOS 12.1, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X include this feature; iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR include this feature starting with iOS 13.1. The effects of performance management on these newer models may be less noticeable due to their more advanced hardware and software design."

So this looks like there are four stages of power management 1) no power management at all (iPhone 5s and earlier) 2) full shutdown prevention (iPhone 6 to 7) 3) partial shutdown prevention (iPhone 8 to XR) 4) no shutdown prevention (iPhone 11 and newer)

So for updates this means that the iPhone 6 was just discontinued because it was too slow, like in the good old days. The 6s and 7 because they can perform really bad with an old battery. Maybe the 8 and XR will be dropped later on in something like iOS 18 if we are lucky (and if Apple really had reasons for dropping the 7 which are not related to money). Then the iPhone 11 and up will last for a very long time hopefully, especially since the improvements since A13 seemed more minor.

The iPads don't need to worry about power management because of their big battery.

Why do people hate the iPhone notch?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2022 01:26 PM PDT

This is just me being curious and wanting to see other peoples options. I don't really get all the hate for the notch on the iPhone and on other Apple products like the Macs. I never really notice it on my iPhone when I'm using it all day. I honestly think it's a good and distinct design element. I know one argument is it takes up screen real estate but honestly I've never really found that to be an issue. Most of the apps I use don't even fill up the screen anyway. I also like how it adds separation between the home and control center pull downs. I know stuff like this is subject but I just wanted to hear what other people think on this.
