    Non-Pro iPhone 14 expectations?

    Posted: 10 Apr 2022 10:01 PM PDT

After the latest rumors last month, most of the significant changes seem to be exclusive to the 14 Pro. So what's expected for the base 14? Just an A15X processor and (maybe) a titanium chassis? Anything else?

    Samsung supplies displays for iPhone

    Posted: 11 Apr 2022 06:51 PM PDT

I've heard that Apple designs their own displays for the 13 promax. But it's very strange there is no information about a apple display design team. If someone could post a link. Because I'm beginning to think Samsung's designs and produces Apple displays.

Unreleased 35W Dual Port USB-C Charger Leaked in Apple Doc

It's been 8 years since the release of Apple Pay. How much longer until we can start leaving our credit cards at home?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2022 11:36 AM PDT

I can't believe it's been nearly a decade since we've had the dream and promise of being able to leave our credit cards at home. Yes I know it's accepted in many placed. But "many" is not NEARLY enough for me to be able to comfortably leave my credit card at home.

I don't understand why Apple chose NFC to be the technology used for this. They're relying on hundreds of thousands of stores to bend over to their phone tech. Many have. But like I said, "many" isn't nearly enough.

What's the point of Apple Pay if my credit card is in my pocket and has tap to pay? Samsung's version of mobile payment is actually accepted enough to be able to leave credit cards at home. I wish I could say the same for Apple Pay.

When do you guys think apple will change the name of the iPhone? (if they will)

    Posted: 08 Apr 2022 08:39 PM PDT

I can't imagine it will be going on and on with the numbers iPhone 17, iPhone 18, iPhone 22, iPhone 32. Atleast not without adding something in front.

    iOS 15.5

    Posted: 07 Apr 2022 06:40 PM PDT

So I installed Beta 1, because I was curious about how will my battery life be, because on 15.4 and 15.4.1 was awful, draining fast and charging slowly. Turns out 15.5 works great for me, battery life is improved and it's charging faster.

They should make a iPhone with the aluminum ‘case’ like the iPads

I feel like it would be a nice option to have aluminum 'case' would be a bit more durable then the glass.

Are you waiting for the iPhone 14 pro?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2022 01:19 PM PDT

I've been holding out on upgrading my 11 pro max. I like the shorter notch and lighter weight. Are you guys who have also held out on upgrading planning to upgrade to the 14 pro/pro max? Any specific reason this phone is the one? Personally I might skip again this year since the 14 pro max is planned to be even thicker and heavier that the 13 pro max. The cut out design doesn't look any less intrusive than the notch. All the recent rumors are not great

Why did Apple skip iPhone 9? Why is there no iPhone 9?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2022 10:52 AM PDT

"It was the iPhone's 10th Anniversary. The iPhone X was released in November 2017 to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the device. It would be slightly different if Apple used the iPhone 9 to refer to iPhones worth 10 years. The number mismatch is still confusing, so it made a lot of sense to skip the iPhone 9."

Every iPhone prior to iPhone 5 released in 2012...had a 3.5" screen.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 04:11 PM PDT

It's pretty crazy when you think about how that was the standard for so long, especially with how phones are routinely approaching 7" screens today.

The LiDAR camera focusing is so bad

    Posted: 07 Apr 2022 09:18 AM PDT

It is unusually bad for an apple product. Whenever I'm indoors and attempt to take a picture of something out the window, the LiDAR focusing mechanism picks up the glass instead of the object outside and it never focuses. I have to use my finger to cover the LiDAR sensor for these pictures to work. I wish I could disable the sensor in some way.

The iPhone SE (2022) camera is underrated (vs 11 Pro; w/ pics)

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 10:01 AM PDT

The iPhone SE (2022) camera is underrated (vs 11 Pro; w/ pics)

Below are two photos taken at the same time, one with an iPhone 11 Pro (without using Night mode), one with the SE (2022). The SE photo is brighter, more vibrant, less noisy, with better sharpness and arguably more details, which aligns with daytime performance. In indoor environment (e.g. living room with TV on only), the SE 3 produces pictures with comparable level of detail against a 13 Pro. Only in extremely dark environment there is a bigger difference due to night mode. Sadly I have deleted the pictures, will follow up when opportunity comes (meeting up a friend who has the 13 Pro).

A lot of this comes from the computational photography processing ability of the A15, allowing it to go head to head with, or even win against older iPhone with superior camera hardware across a variety of settings. Although there is only a single camera, it has been well utilized to the max. The front selfie camera is not as sharp but with equally good and consistent colors in well to moderately dark environment.

On a side note, battery life is remarkable for its spec, comparable to an ageing 8 Plus with 90% battery health. 6-7 hours SOT per day consistently with light to moderate usage (web browsing, social media and youtube). Independent testing from YouTube proves my findings to not be a fluke, and SOT endurance in moderate to heavy testing is similar to the iPhone 11. The phone is getting a lot of hate but it has been amazing so far. If one does not mind the screen size (which has simliar quality, e.g. brightness, contrast, color accuracy etc to an 11 and the best of IPS from android side, just smaller). Not to mention the amazingly fast A15 processor that allows all games to be turned to the max, plus the good build quality (against similiarly priced androids), the overall package is awesome.

iOS 16 Feature Request: Treat Personal Hotspot as On-Device Data

    Posted: 07 Apr 2022 06:34 PM PDT

Apple brags about 5G on iPhones and how speeds are so fast, and as crazy as it might sound, I don't think they're overhyping it. In my city, I get 300-800mbps consistently on T-Mobile 5G UC on my iPhone 13 Pro Max, including indoors. In my house, I regularly get faster speeds than my gigabit home internet over Wi-Fi, and sometimes when I get my internet bills, I even feel like I'm wasting money. After all, a gigabit fiber connection over Wi-Fi might soon become slower than a 5G cellular connection, especially at the rate that carriers are improving their 5G to live up to their claims. The issue is that most carriers limit their mobile hotspot data so it can't replace your home internet. For example, my T-Mobile Magenta Max plan, with truly unlimited priority on-device data, only has 40GB of high-speed hotspot data, and then it gets slowed to a borderline unusable 600kbps. This is not right, and if the "capitalist" carriers, with this small hard-to-understand print, won't step in, Apple should. Apple should change the algorithm of Personal Hotspot so it isn't recognized as hotspot data by the wireless carriers and instead recognized as on-device data. This would allow hotspot support on traditionally unsupported plans like Verizon 5G Start, and the amount of hotspot data would be the same as the amount of on-device data (for example, if you have a 35GB plan with 5GB of official hotspot data, you would get the full 35GB of hotspot data on this new Apple feature). This can already be done manually on macOS by changing the TTL to 65, but is a hacky workaround and has to be reset every time you restart your Mac. Apple should enable this or do some other trick to get unlimited hotspot data by default. In the age of 500mbps+ speeds over cellular, 600kbps arbitrary limits after 40GB (which I can easily use in a day judging by how many 4K videos I watch) is ridiculous. Here are a few other reasons why Apple should implement this.

    • Apple has already done similar stuff and carriers didn't care - For example, Apple made FaceTime not take up users' call minutes and iMessage not take up users' SMS message limits, meaning you can technically have unlimited talk and text even if you have a data-only plan assuming everybody you want to call or text has an Apple product. Carriers didn't care. Heck, the Apple Watch has full access to the iPhone's cellular network without having to go through the traditional mobile hotspot, so it would make sense to open this proprietary cellular sharing feature to the iPad and Mac as well. For technical reasons and to keep people in the Apple ecosystem, I'm imagining this new hotspot feature to only support Apple products, meaning if you have a Chromebook or PC, you would be forced to still use the carrier-limited hotspot. If carriers didn't care about other Apple proprietary features to cannibalize them, they will probably not care about this.
    • Could pave the way for a new era of broadband availability - Right now, at least in the US, there is a massive broadband gap. Many areas of the US don't have adequate access to traditional broadband landline internet even if they have decent cellular speeds. For example, a few years ago, a Reddit user complained about Verizon's arbitrary hotspot limits. Their area has 90mbps LTE speeds but only a maximum of 15mbps DSL for home internet. This is not right, and 90mbps is certainly better than 15mbps, so if it's the only true broadband option, and assuming there probably aren't many other people in that area, this user should be able to use as much of that LTE data as they want for their home internet. Verizon won't let them. Apple, with their private APIs, can. Most carriers have some form of fixed wireless internet as well. However, it's not available everywhere with coverage of said carrier and may be geolocked (for example Hoboken, NJ can't get Verizon mmWave 5G Home Internet even though their mmWave network is certainly capable enough, just because Verizon wants to protect the monopoly of Fios). This completely ignores the benefits of using a cellular connection as your home internet as you're not given the freedom it provides, and if the carriers won't fix it, Apple can.
    • Could pave the way for an Apple Wi-Fi router, among other things - Showing that the iPhone can be a great Wi-Fi 6 router (it regularly has a faster Tx rate than my Fios router), shows that perhaps, maybe Apple could revive the AirPort line and get back into the networking business. Besides that, this hypothetical proprietary hotspot feature could inspire Apple to add new features to the iPhone and Mac, like Wi-Fi 6E to better support transmission of the gigabit+ 5G speeds across devices, and a USB-C/Thunderbolt port on the iPhone to provide a great Ethernet alternative. In the future, if you wanted a 10Gb Ethernet connection but not lose the flexibility of Wi-Fi, perhaps you could just rent an apartment in Hoboken (I'm using this as an example as due to its small size, it has pretty ubiquitous mmWave coverage), you could get a cell signal booster, and take your Mac and iPhone around your house or even around the entire city, and get those same data center-level speeds, all with no limits from Verizon thanks to unlimited priority data on the 5G Get More plan. Suddenly, you would no longer need to be sitting at your desk with a bulky router and set of dongles if you wanted these speeds.

This would be a great feature for Apple to add in iOS 16.

Summary: This feature would allow for unlimited Personal Hotspot data bypassing all carrier hotspot limits using a private API similar to how the iPhone shares data with the Apple Watch.
