Why is it still so difficult to play music on an iPhone?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2021 01:03 PM PDT

I'm sure you've all heard this story thousand of times, I've lived it several times over already. It's just frustrating that years have passed and Apple still forces me to bang my head against this wall, over and over again.

So my partner's Android phone has been losing its battery life, I suggested she gets an iPhone. We transferred all the data over, setup Face-ID, Siri, Apple Pay, Mail and so on, all fine.

She has a bunch of mp3 files on her Android phone, that I copied from some CD's she owns. Getting them on to the Android phone was easy. Plug the phone into a USB sockets on a laptop, copy the files to the appropriate folder. Thats it, music plays, it just works.

Nothing so obvious with the iPhone. I plug it in to the USB, there is no folder to copy the Music to. There is a photos folder, but no Music. I download a Windows program to copy files between Android and iPhone, its requires you to install iTunes on Windows first. So then I remember that you have to use iTunes, so fine, I boot up the Mac Mini and plug in the phone.

The phone uses my partner's Apple account, iTunes is logged in for me, so firstly it wants to wipe the phone and install my files. It tell it to "Treat this as a new phone", a phrase which might mean erase it and install everything new but thankfully it doesn't. Now we seem to be in some sort of ambiguous limbo. iTunes shows all the music in my library, but its connected to her phone. Can I put these on her phone or not?

I tell it to not auto-sync the phone with music (because she wants her music, not mine). So now what do I do? I guess I have to copy the files from the Android phone to the Mac, then add them to the iTunes library, copy them to her phone with iTunes, delete them from the library (but not from her phone), delete them from the Mac. Hope that iTunes won't delete them if I ever plug her phone into the Mac again.

But what if I try to copy them over and iTunes says its the wrong apple ID? Do I have to login to iTunes as her and then lose my music library? Are those files mine or hers, or are they just files that can be copied? But then why would I need to use iTunes at all if they are just files, isn't it supposed to manage media rights or something?

How can this be so easy with Android and so difficult with iPhone? Why is it so stressful and complicated? She legally owns some music files and a phone, she wants to put the files on the phone and play them. It really isn't a difficult task so why is it so complicated?
