MacOS Monterey brings boot up power chime to my MacBook Pro. How do I disable it? Posted: 31 Jan 2022 12:16 AM PST It never chimed for power plug while booting up, not in Catalina or Big Sur. After I updated to Monterey, it started chiming when booting up. How would I turn off the power chime only for the boot up process? [link] [comments]
Verification code generator sync Posted: 30 Jan 2022 11:10 PM PST TL;DR: you can actually share/airdrop verification code generator amongst your Apple devices; go ahead and enable 2FA :D A verification code generator was added as a feature in macOS and iOS to provide a built-in two-factor authentication. I found it a great idea to get rid of the third-party verification code providers such as Authy or Google Authenticator, so I tried to gradually migrate my OTPs. All the convenience expectations were broken since I tried to actually use this feature: the auto-fill would only appear on a single device that was registered as a verification code generator; this feature won't synchronise across other devices. Moreover, in order to get the code, you've got to unbury it from the Passwords section of the Settings app on your iPhone or the passwords section of your Safari preferences on macOS. I thought the OTP auto-fill is going to be synced across my devices because, you know, the Ecosystem, and I was wrong. And I get it why Apple would want it that way. The second factor in 2FA usually stands for the identity-by-possession, meaning that you've got to actually own a separate device in order to authenticate. Synchronising the OTP would mean it's no longer a possession factor, so your security is compromised. Thus, I'm not going to recommend you doing the workaround I found :D In the Passwords section of the Settings app on your iPhone there's a share button for each website/password pair. When airdropped to your Mac, it retains the verification code generator, so you'll be able to have it configured everywhere. I though I should share this since pretty much nobody's using 2FA, but this way will allow you to build up your security just a little while retaining convenience. P.s. I'm not sure whether or not this works in a third-party browsers and iOS apps. P.p.s. OTP is an acronym for "one-time password". [link] [comments]

Exporting unmodified original photo changes date Posted: 30 Jan 2022 07:55 PM PST Hi, I hope there is anyone who can help me with this. No idea why, but when I export unmodified original photos from my mac (photos app) some of the metadata gets corrupted. These photos have the wrong date on them, and I checked it by creating another library and importing those files. Any solution to this? THANKS!!! [link] [comments]
Allowing users to log into their account on my Macpro but without sharing my screen Posted: 30 Jan 2022 08:55 PM PST I have several accounts on my MacPro that I use in my office that has math teaching software for my kids. That computer in my office has El Capitan on it and can that old software that our other computers can not. The newer computers are in the common area where the kids share several computers. But to use this old software, I'd like them to be able to log into the Macpro to their accounts on the Macpro that are set up there and not come in and displace me from my chair in my office because they need to run their math software. But I can't seem to find a way with Screen Sharing or Remote Login that doesn't come up and give them the option to either share the screen/login with their account. I want to just bypass that option window and go right to the login screen. Is that possible? If they pick "Log in as yourself: "<username" it does exactly what I want. I just don't want the option to come up to share the screen where I'm working. Any ideas? [link] [comments]
How to run multiple instances off an app with a two word application name? Posted: 31 Jan 2022 02:42 AM PST I just found this great video that does exactly what Im after. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2n46Vzui-SY&t=6s The problem is that I want to run an app called Camo Studio. And when Im automator and write the following: /Applications/Camo Studio.app/Contents/MacOS/Camo Studio it gets confused about the splited up name. It says that there is no app called Camo... Any Idea how to fix this? I have tried to insert "" but it doesn't solve the problem : ( "/Applications/Camo Studio.app/Contents/MacOS/Camo Studio" /Applications/"Camo Studio.app"/Contents/MacOS/"Camo Studio" All the best. Monterey on iMac 5k late 2014 - how well does it run? Posted: 31 Jan 2022 02:26 AM PST Anyone out there running Monterey on an iMac 5k late 2014? I'm currently on Mojave. Considering coming into the present, but always concerned about killing the machine with slow-down.
-- What steps should I be looking to take if I wanted to upgrade with the option to revert/downgrade? For upgrade, I presume the best chance at the quickest performance would be to wipe the computer and go from there? Which I guess means I'd need a backup? Would I then also need a backup of a clean Mojave, minus all my files and apps? Or could I just download Mojave again and downgrade? [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 02:11 AM PST I have a M1 MBP currently running 12.1, but I have noticed that my battery life is noticeably worse (4-5% per hour) and would like to revert back to 12.0, Unfortunately, I don't have a Time Machine backup. Is there any way for me to do this? [link] [comments]
Mysterious dissapearence of the Desktop Pictures folder Posted: 31 Jan 2022 01:45 AM PST I was looking to add my own Dynamic wallpapers to use. I made a folder called Desktop Pictures in the Library and added two files. The folder disappeared and now the files appear as if they are provided by the system. I tried to replicate this process and add one more picture but to no avail. Made the folder but it now appears as a user added directory and I'm unable to utilise the Dynamic functionality. Does anyone have any ideas? OS: Monterey [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Jan 2022 12:52 AM PST It has always bothered me that Mac Mail has lacked the ability to work with Send Later ability. I work Asia time a lot, and don't want my emails to people in California getting lost in a 3 AM spam pile. There is a Kickstarter working on this, but it has less than four days remaining - and still is about $3,500 short of being funded. It seems to be a rather trivial plugin, but Mac Mail plugins have always been a corner of macOS that didn't get a lot of attention. Hopefully if anything, Apple recognizes the demand for this. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pierreparissi/send-later [I have no relation to this project other than being a backer - this is not self-promotion, and a search showed zero posts on r/macOS to date about this]. Posted: 30 Jan 2022 04:58 PM PST Recently upgraded from Catalina to Monterey. Everything works fine and I love the operating system, but my mouse is barely functional. It's jittery on and off. It works fine for a couple of minutes and starts to lag. Anyone else have the same thing? [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 06:21 PM PST I have a 2013 MacBook Air running latest version of BigSur. Two days ago Finder just stopped working (occasionally it worked partially - enough for me to get needed files backed up (in addition to Time Machine backup)). There are many similar cases reported in various forums. Common thread seems to be Intel based Mac with BigSur and no real solution. I have resorted to erasing the SSD and reinstalling BigSur and yet the problem is still there. The age and small value of the Mac make expensive repairs uneconomic. My guess is that there is either an SSD fault or perhaps a memory fault. The reinstall would seem to rule out a software problem. Any thought please> Regards, Peter [link] [comments] |
