iPad pro serrated edge / poor finishing

    Posted: 25 Aug 2021 11:26 AM PDT

I recently purchased a new iPad pro 12.9 after having waited over a year for the mini LED display to come out.

As I unboxed it and began setting it up, the sunlight somehow caught the edge of the metallic bezel surrounding the screen causing several points along this edge to reflect light in the same way a small dent or flaw on bare aluminium would. This drew my attention, and, upon closer inspection, I discovered that the edge all the way around the display seems to have been cut with a very dull CNC tool causing a serrated look (I tried my best to capture this using my phone's camera here: https://imgur.com/a/JArUOc8).

Given that I wasn't sure if this was a problem with my device or the new iPads in general, I decided to go to my local stores to have a look. I can confirm that every iPad i've seen so far has this "issue" to a certain extent. I then checked the new iPhones, and tablets from Samsung and Microsoft, they have very well finished edges.

I am not sure why Apple, a company that makes very premium devices is ok with this, especially on what many would call a flagship showcase product for the company. Surly they could sand these edges down to give them a smooth finish - they could even sand the edges with another CNC machine in a streamlined process.

I am a bit disappointed to see this level of finishing on a $1000 tablet. Seems like a very strange cost cutting measure.

What about you guys, would this bother you? Have you even noticed this if you have an iPad pro? What are your thoughts?
