Regarding recent events and the ongoing discussions

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 12:39 PM PDT

Due to recent events/news, the r/Apple mod team would like to remind everyone that we expect everyone in this community to be treated with respect and dignity.

Apple fans/enthusiasts, please remember that there are people in this sub, just like yourself, that support Apple. Some fans, however, may sometimes disagree with the way Apple does things. That's okay.

Non-fans of Apple, keep in mind that you are in a subreddit where not only do people believe in Apple's mission, but they have also voted with their money to the point where they might be "all-in Apple". Don't be surprised if people are okay with the things Apple does even if you aren't okay with them.

Please keep your comments on topic, and respectful. You are obviously allowed to disagree with someone, but remember to tackle/attack the argument, not the person. Just because someone says something that may raise your eyebrows, you can't jump into conclusions and say: "You are a pedos/molesters/whatever", "Stop supporting pedos/molesters/whatever". We welcome and encourage debates, but this subreddit is not the place for name calling, unkind sarcasm or trolling.

While we are on the topic, please report comments/posts that actually break Rule 6. Do not report comments just because you disagree with them, or simply don't like them.

As an extra side note, please do not submit text posts that would otherwise work as comments in the threads that are already on the subreddit. We may allow your post if you are starting a high-level discussion, or you are presenting high-effort opinions (basically things not against Rule 4). These are some examples of what we are trying to avoid.

Due to Apple’s privacy lapse, I’m suddenly rethinking my stance on HomeKit and smart home tech, in general

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 08:46 AM PDT

Apple has decided that if the moral justification is great enough, they're willing to sacrifice their users' privacy and security. So where are the limits?

What's to stop Apple from implementing "private and secure" measures in HomeKit, for the greater good?

Will they develop ML algorithms to monitor all HomeKit camera feeds for any, potentially criminal, activity? These algorithms could have a very high threshold of security, only flagging your recordings if they reach a certain threshold of likely criminality. Then an Apple employee could review the footage personally, before sending it to authorities.

If you're not doing anything wrong, there's nothing to worry about, right?

What about smart door locks? Why shouldn't Apple develop a program to grant law enforcement agencies digital keys to people's homes, in certain situations? Maybe you fall and your Apple Watch calls emergency services, who can get in your house, without having to break your door down. There's no harm in that, right?

Once encryption, along with measures to protect user privacy and security, are subject to whatever moral principles Apple has decided are more important — suddenly these protections mean nothing. They're a secure vault from the front, but the back is nothing more than cardboard, held on with office tape.

Edit: It just occurred to me that in the exact same update that's going to introduce this new, on device, CSAM hash comparison, for iCloud users — Apple is also introducing unlimited HomeKit security camera storage, for paid iCloud subscribers.

What email provider do you use?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 07:59 PM PDT

So as I am getting older I am really appreciating my privacy/data more and more. Im wondering what email provider do you use and why? I have a bunch of email addresses that I have created throughout the years but use the one on a daily basis which is gmail and well I just read over and over what google does with our data.

With this being a apple forum does anyone use iCloud for there email?

System Managers / Admins: how does your company feel about Apple’s new “we’ll check all your iPhone data to make sure it’s allowed” functionality?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 10:37 PM PDT

For the past year or so, I have been involved in the design, implementation, and management of large-scale MDM systems. I am currently engaged for a global company with 45k iPhones deployed and managed globally.

Privacy is a huge issue (this is a German firm), and for every hour working on the technology, I spend 5 dealing with privacy related matters - GDPR Compliance, Works Council inspections and audits, etc.

Every new release or update, every change in config, every new or updated app, anything at all is relentlessly checked and discussed.

This brand new world of on-device hash-checking Apple is ushering in isn't going to fly with this crowd. Whilst we don't deploy devices with Apple IDs or iCloud, we have a COPE model, and users are free to set up their Apple ID and iCloud.

Coming hot on the heels of Pegasus, which is a huge deal for us - checking 45k iPhones is a serious logistical challenge, and it shattered the privacy/security veneer that sold this business on going iPhone-only a few years back - this latest initiative from the brain trust at Apple will at the very least keep us really busy (lawyers are already loving it, the whole idea of a company owned device scanning private data is causing these vultures to run their hands in glee), and is likely going to trigger serious discussions about staying with Apple for mobile devices.

How are your companies dealing with this?

Will the new lack of encryption, scanning, etc story actually influence your future purchases?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 06:42 AM PDT

Anecdotally, for what it's worth, in the multiple threads about the new "scanning our iPhones" threads, if you don't know, they're plastered all over the subreddit's front page currently, many people are saying this is their "last straw", etc and vow to move to Linux full time or maybe Android, who knows.

How many of you are planning to go this route or at least exploring your options?

Android's privacy isn't much better unless maybe you're de-Googled. Windows is a train wreck on privacy, so where do we go from here? Linux?

I'm painfully aware a lot of our "privacies" have been shot for years anyway with pretty much anything we do with our devices but actively scanning our iPhones, I have huge issues with that because of what it will be used for in the future, today it's CSAM, tomorrow it'll be anything anti-this or anything that some government agency or body disagrees with.

It's probably one of the most damning anti-privacy moves I've seen in a while.

Personally, this does slightly make me question what my next devices will be. I'm not a privacy obsessed individual although I value it, again I know our constant tech every day doesn't cooperate with that, however for me, I'm finding a strong line in the sand with my personal phone being essentially looked at it whenever Apple's system inevitably glitches, has a false positive, or worse, malevolent uses.

I don't care if my photos are "scanned" when uploaded to iCloud, I'm aware of that already, I'm strictly talking about Apple personally scanning my device as a whole and baking essentially a backdoor into the OS at will.

Honestly thinking out loud, I likely won't switch because there's no good alternatives but I don't want to ever hear again how "privacy focused" Apple is.

    Thoughts?

Schedule a text message in 2021

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 01:52 AM PDT

Can anyone offer a reasonable explanation as to why we can't schedule a text message to be sent at a later time without special software on our iPhones? It just seems like such a basic feature that should have been included 10 years ago.
