Apple plans to scan US iPhones for child abuse imagery

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 08:11 AM PDT

Until iCloud is fully end-to-end encrypted, Apple's privacy stand is just false advertisement.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 02:56 PM PDT

This should include everything in iCloud, from backups and photos to messages and bookmarks.

The ads should have a big asterisk like this:

What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone*

    *Unless you use iCloud.

Four problems with Apple's reported approach to scanning for child abuse images

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 10:44 AM PDT

Nicholas Weaver (@ncweaver): Ohohohoh... Apple's system is really clever, and apart from that it is privacy sensitive mass surveillance, it is really robust. It consists of two pieces: a hash algorithm and a matching process. Both are nifty, and need a bit of study, but 1st impressions...

Everyone is talking about CSAM scanning, but can we discuss how Siri is going to monitor your search terms now?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 03:51 PM PDT

Expanding guidance in Siri and Search

Apple is also expanding guidance in Siri and Search by providing additional resources to help children and parents stay safe online and get help with unsafe situations. For example, users who ask Siri how they can report CSAM or child exploitation will be pointed to resources for where and how to file a report.

Siri and Search are also being updated to intervene when users perform searches for queries related to CSAM. These interventions will explain to users that interest in this topic is harmful and problematic, and provide resources from partners to get help with this issue.

These updates to Siri and Search are coming later this year in an update to iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8, and macOS Monterey.*

Who gets to decide which search terms are "CSAM related"? What if someone searches for "teen" or "small tits" etc? Does Siri simply prevent the search or does she also tell Apple about it?

Apple alarms need a separate volume knob.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 07:50 AM PDT

This is the second time this week I've missed work because of the stupid ass volume bar for my alarm. I'm a deep sleeper and I tend to subconsciously turn off my alarm so I put it across the room. I wake up an hour and a half later than my alarm, look at it and realize it's been going off but since I turned my ringer down for a completely different reason, that I turned my alarm almost silent. What is up with this?

The braided lightning cables that come with 24” iMac should be the STANDARD Apple lightning cable

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 07:58 AM PDT

Just picked up two 24" iMacs and noticed they come with a color matched 1m braided lightning to USB-C cable. The standard lightning cable that comes with iPhones and runs about $20 to replace is utter trash and has the real world lifespan of a fruit fly. These on the other hand, seem to be a bit more robust. If they're not going to include a USB-C charger in future phones (ahem.. for the uh.. environment), then include cables that don't force me to throw them away and buy new ones every couple of months.

Edit: The braided thunderbolt pro cable should also be the default MB Pro charging cable for the same reason.

Airtags, for people living alone, apparently..

    Posted: 05 Aug 2021 06:24 AM PDT

So I got a set of Airtags because we were going on vacation and I added the tags to some backpacks.

Now that we are home, the backpacks still have the tags on, but all on my account. The wife started getting notifications she was being followed. Ignored it, and it started making sounds...

So I switched her backpack Airtag to her account, and now I get the notification... It's still vacation time here, so we do things with and without each other on a more regular basis. Sometimes I carry the backpack all day because she has the baby carrier.

So we either turn off the Airtags, or need to keep switching them daily depending on what we are doing. I hope Apple adds some family options soon, all our accounts are connected that way, so it should see we kinda move together...

The kids don't have iPhone's yet, but I imagine if you have teenagers that have, it would become more of an issue with multiple devices thinking they are being tracked..
