How many of you are first-time Mac users switching to M1?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 04:08 AM PDT

On January 1, 2021, I purchased an M1 MacBook Air (8-core GPU, 8 GB/512GB), my first ever Mac. I love it. Coming from an i7 10th gen Lenovo, which had terrible battery life and performance, this is love at first sight. I feel that this truly is a laptop. Amazing battery life, excellent performance, the BEST keyboard and touchpad.... what more could you ask?

Any of you in this community lifelong Windows users who switched to M1? Or any Intel Mac users switching to a newer M1 Mac? How is your experience?

    Help Big Sur pain!

    Posted: 24 Jul 2021 12:25 AM PDT

I have a brand new iMac 2015 that I just acquired. It was a surplus unit from work - brand new never opened.

So the FiRST thing I do after setting up the wifi was check for updates. And lo and behold, the option to install Big Sur comes up and i do that. The system is brand ass new at this point. I have installed Chrome, Firefox, a vpn program, open office. Big Sur was 12gb or so and downloaded and installed overnight.

    It. Is. Lagging. Everything. Now.

It's unbelievable. The iMac is a brick virtually at this point.

I barely got to use the iMac with the original OS. I'm not even sure what it was.

I can't roll back because no Time Machine.

What can i do to fix? If i get additional 8gb ram and change to solid state hard drive, would that help? I got the imac for free so i don't I mind upgrading costs if it'll help.

    Thanks.

Very frequent MacBook Air black screens (OS crashes, I guess)

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 09:24 PM PDT

I'm a Windows and Unix guy without a lot of Mac OS specific knowledge but I've got a strange problem with my wife's Macbook Air (MD760LL/B, 2013) and I've run out of ideas.

Once in a while the screen would go black and the sound would quit, presumably an OS crash. This always seemed to happen when playing steaming video in Firefox or watching a video with VLC. I figured it had to be a due to a buggy video driver, possibility a hardware acceleration issue. Seems like it's been going on since Big Sur was released, maybe even earlier. But we could live with a crash every couple of weeks on a box used mostly for web surfing and watching videos. Perhaps Apple would fix the driver some day...

But after last night's crash (while watching streaming video), it crashes to a black screen about 10 secs to 2 minutes after fully booting up. Safe mode doesn't help. Sometimes it even crashes during boot up. Only Single User Mode seems stable.

I tried to update the OS from Recovery Mode. At first I didn't have enough disk space, so I kicked up a terminal from Recovery Mode and blew away Xcode (rm -rf my old friend) since I couldn't keep a normal boot up long enough to remove Xcode properly. After that it was willing to try the OS update. It usually downloads at least 1GB (of 3GB) of Big Sur 11.5 and then crashes before downloading it all, or crashes while preparing the system for the OS update. Despite successfully downloading all of Big Sur 11.5 once, it doesn't cache it anywhere on the filesystem—I've got fast internet, but gee what about folks who don't?!

Disk Aid (i.e. fsck) from Recovery mode indicates clean file systems. Apple Diagnostics doesn't report anything, though I think it black screened on one attempt. I tried resetting the NVRAM. It's not clear whether I succeeded; I held the four keys down through two chime cycles but didn't see any message indicative of a successful reset.

I don't know what to try next. I don't even have any intuition as to whether this is a hardware or software problem.

Maybe the system log would provide a clue. It's hard to get a good look before the OS crashes again. Now that I've done a csrutil disable from Recovery Mode, I might be able to mount partitions from Single User Mode and grep through the system log. But I'm not sure what I'd be looking for.

Any major problems for M1 for developers?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 11:13 PM PDT

I know that docker is supported now, and lots of things run through rosetta 2. But are there any other issues? And also is the SSD problem still concerning if I need MBA M1 base model for 3-4 years?

    MacOS High Sierra lockdown

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 07:23 PM PDT

I have a 2009 iMac running High Sierra. It is in a public place, and is for anyone to use. What I want to do is lockdown the computer so that only Safari and iTunes are available without a password.

Is this possible? Does anyone know how to do this? Can you tell me where I could find out?

    Issue upgrading from Catalina 10.15.1

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 09:44 PM PDT

Hi. I'm running an early 2015 MacBook Air, 128Gb. I on Catalina 10.15.1, and am unable to upgrade it further.

In the upgrades panel I am unable to set the "Install MacOS Updates" flag. When I click it, it just clears again, with no error or anything.

I have over 30Gb of disk space available.

I also downloaded 10.5.2 Combo, but I get a general app failure on the package when I install.

I tried installing in Safe Mode, but I got the same issue.

I really don't like being stuck on such an old patch.

    Any help gratefully received.

Start Screen saver terminal commands in Big Sur?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 12:54 PM PDT

    I used to use:

    /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu\ Extras/user.menu/Contents/Resources/CGSession -suspend

to start the screen saver via terminal. But user.menu does not exist in Big Sur. Is there a way to start the screen saver via the terminal?

    Shortcut to show control panel.

Is there a shortcut to show the control panel? Because it seems that apple has basically removed the option to show it with just a keyboard shortcut.

Does Brave Browser drain your Macbook Pro's battery?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 11:34 AM PDT

I've been using Brave Browser on my 2019 Macbook Pro, and it's battery went from 100 to 59 in only a couple hours of usage (mostly YouTube). I'm suspecting it's because of the browser instead of my macbook's battery. I've noticed other apps like grammarly and discord that makes my laptop hot, and drains it's battery. So it's possible brave does it too.

    Uninstall macOS High Sierra App

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 03:58 PM PDT

    Uninstall macOS High Sierra App

I downloaded macOS High Sierra to install it on a White MacBook. I had to do so twice because the USB-installer failed. Anyways, I moved both apps to the trash, but when I try to empty it, it says that I don't have enough permissions to do so and that it's open (when it is not). What can I do? Almost 9GB in the trash.

I tried to restart the computer, to delete the inhaler by Terminal, by opening the contents of the package and assigning me administrator permissions (although I'm the administrator of my laptop).

I'm in Monterey with an Intel MacBook Pro.

Macbook Air: need to reinstall OS, but the drive is full.

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 03:37 PM PDT

My wife's Macbook Air has something going on with the OS, to the point that it even KPs when I try to start it in safe mode. I decided to try to go into recovery mode to reinstall the OS, but there's not enough space to reinstall. There's a couple of Time Machine local snapshots that I think are the culprits. I have an external drive that I can boot from, but I don't know how to delete the snapshots when I'm booting from an external drive.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

    Anyone have a solution?

MacOS 11.5 seems to have broken the photo sync using Finder… again.

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 03:14 PM PDT

Last this this happened was Feb 19 and it took Apple nearly 18 months to fix it.

With 11.4 syncing photos was fine. With 11.5…. Either the sync takes 2-3 seconds and no new photos are transferred or it just sits on "reading photos from library" for ages then does nothing.

The only way I can get it to sync at all is to delete the entire iPod photo cache but then it has 12k files to regenerate and takes 10x longer.

And for some reason now I get loads of errors about video formats for videos that have previously synced and played fine.

It really feels like Apple are deliberately breaking this to try and force people to use iClouds photos. If they actually let you have folders in the iCloud Photo Library that held the photo instead of referencing it I'd use it in a heartbeat but it doesn't seem likely.

Anyone else getting this issue and possibly found a solution?

    Image editor with ruler?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 03:12 PM PDT

Not sure if that's the name of the tool though. I'm looking for a simple way to draw some straight lines on an image, with software telling me how long they are, and a way to draw angles with their value showing up (need to measure distance and size of objects from a photo).

    External GPU

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 02:58 PM PDT

    Hi,

im planing on buying a external graphics card for my Macbook Pro to off load the light video editing that I do. I'm wanting to buy https://www.owcdigital.com/products/mercury-helios-3s I'm a huge fan of OWC. Im wondering what graphics card I should buy for to use with this chassis. to off load the editing that I do. I do the occasional editing with final cut pro and Adobe after effects but when I do it probably puts a lot of stress on my internal graphics card.
