Why doesn't Apple improve its Mail app formatting (similar to Outlook)?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 01:32 PM PDT

Am I the only one who actually thinks that Apple Mail app has quite a large room for improvement when it comes to formatting? Here are few things that I find annoying (it is mainly on Mac):

    • Just think about inserting a numbered/bulleted list. I have to actually find and click it in the menu.
    • When copy/pasting something without preserving original format, I need to click a long weird shortcut: CMD+ALT+SHIFT+V.
    • When attaching PDFs, it is actually inserting the whole document inside the email instead of simply "attaching" it.

    There is probably more.

On the other hand, Outlook does a pretty good job with it - very similar to Word. I am personally using Apple Mail but occasionally have to use Outlook at work/school. The difference is huge unfortunately.

I hope Apple can improve it because I really want to keep everything within Apple ecosystem.

Apple Support told me that Apple has Zero Knowledge Encryption if you choose to generate a Recovery Key

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 04:41 AM PDT

Per my conversation with Apple Support, if you generate a Recovery Key, it enables your account to have zero knowledge / end to end encryption. It does mean however, that you can't use Apple's account recovery help. Only your recovery key + trusted phone number + an Apple device can reset your password.

    Copy of my conversation: https://i.imgur.com/LgjNDuC.jpg

    Excerpt:

    Me

Hi, regarding Recovery Keys, I understand I won't be able to use account recovery through Apple if I forget my password.

My assumption is that without a recovery key being generated, Apple holds the encryption key for my account so that Apple can reset it to let my in if I forget the password.

When I generate a recovery key, I assume Apple WILL NOT have the encryption key for my account. Is this equivalent to zero knowledge encryption available on services like Bitwarden, ProtonMail, sync.com? Like Apple will not be able to know the user content on my iCloud because it doesn't hold the encryption key.

    Apple Support:

To answer your question about the zero knowledge encryption, Yes is the answer to that.

For me this sounds too good to be true. The first major tech provider to support zero knowledge encryption for all cloud data. Am I missing something?

How Good is Mac / iOS Sandboxing?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 05:43 AM PDT

I'm surprised iOS doesn't offer a kill switch to cut an application off the Internet. Like Lightroom telling you when first launching that it's going to share your data with its crooked developer and you can do literally nothing to prevent it from doing so short of keeping your device offline at all times. You don't even know if it's running a rogue helper doing its bidding in the background and Apple does nothing to stop that. So much for all the privacy hype.

What about macOS though? Can you weed all the background helpers out and ban the apps from doing anything not immediately related to their core functionality?

First-party iPhone 12 mini cases discounted at Amazon

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 02:56 AM PDT

Amazon.com is currently selling the iPhone 12 mini Leather and Silicone MagSafe cases at discounts up to ~40% off. Not sure where it's coming from, but it's on the official "Apple Store" at Amazon. It still says it's fulfilled by Amazon too, so I'm pretty sure it's legitimate.

Silicone and leather cases are down to $30 and $35, respectively. That's for the Black color; other colors are discounted too but not by as much.

I'm not sure how much longer this will be happening haha, but I did want to share!
