Is it worth getting the MBP 16 i9 now?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 06:42 PM PDT

We know that Intel Mac's are on the way out no more newer ones obviously. Is it worth getting an Intel mbp with 9th generation Intel over the M1 macbooks or even (gasp) a high end windows machine like Razer Blade 15/17?

Need to know if I should get the battery changed urgently

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 08:54 PM PDT

I had some issues with my MacBook Pro late 2015 today - random full black screen while working on it and then it would refuse to even switch on.

After trying many different things like smc reset or nvram reset, none of which worked it randomly switched on. The issue hasn't come up again but I'm guessing it was software.

But just to be sure and check I opened my mac up to a little swollen battery and I don't know how bad this is or how long I can keep using it like this. The cover fits flush and doesn't bulge after screwing it in. Should I replace the battery urgently or can it wait?

[Question] Is the 13 inch MacBook screen inconvenient?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 04:51 AM PDT

I'm thinking of buying a MacBook in the future to use for programming and browsing. The 1200-1500€ price range seems good for a 13 inch one and the lowest price for a 16 inch is 2400€ here which is double the price and kind of a no go. I know this might differ from person to person but I'd like to hear some thoughts on the screen size.

The reason I want a laptop is so I can take it with me everywhere and work from anywhere. I also have a pc which has a bigger screen so it's not like the MacBook is going to be my main

    MacBook Pro 2015 or MacBook 12in 2015

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 10:24 PM PDT

Hello, I am currently in the market for a MacBook. My budget is around 300-450. I'm currently stuck between a MacBook Pro and a MacBook 12in. Some things I will be using this for is school, excel, and programming. I like the Pro because of its upgradability, the ports, and the reviews behind it. I also like the 12 inch MacBook because of its modern design. Would anyone be able to help me decide which one I should get? Edit I also wouldn't mind the MacBook Air 13in 2015 I just would rather have a Retina display.

MB Air M1 and USB-C Hub

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 09:40 PM PDT

    Hi r/macbook

The odds of me getting a MacBook Air M1 soon are getting somewhat more likely. I was wondering if y'all have had any experiences with any USB-C hubs and what ones y'all have found to be really good and hasn't bricked yor MacBook because the last time I want to do is buy a M1 Air, get a USB-C hub and brick it

Is the MacBook Pro 2017 a good buy?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 09:21 PM PDT

I'm looking at buying this computer on Craigslist this week for $450. Roughly 500 cycle count on the battery. I mainly intend to use it for schoolwork and studying on campus, but possibly may have to dual boot Windows 10 on it for certain applications. I have been using a gaming laptop but the battery life is poor, and my only other laptop is a MacBook Pro from 2012, which was great for the longest time, but is very slow nowadays.

My question is, are the odds of serious issues like flexgate or keyboard issues high? I know there are cases of this online, but I'm not sure how prevalent these actually are. I'm looking to use this for at least a few years, but given that it's a few years old I don't intend to use it forever.

    Bluetooth mouse recommendations?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 09:05 PM PDT

Just recently purchased a M1 MacBook Air which only comes with 2 thunderbolt ports. What's a good Bluetooth mouse to use with it as I'm not a fan of using trackpads. Looking for something in the $20-$50 range. Thank you in advance!

    Need Help Choosing A MacBook

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 02:56 PM PDT

I want to buy an M1 Macbook

Now I own a windows laptop, I edit on Adobe Premiere, Photoshop and Lightroom a lot of time but I messed a bit with Final Cut and it will be a good replacement

I edit only 1080p videos for casual jobs but most of the time I work with 10-15 1080p videos in the same time playing on screen, and I need to scroll through them fluidly.

I plan to develop an app for iOS and Android on it too.

They say that the MacBook Air after a long working time heats up and the processor thermal throttles, and on the MacBook Pro it does not happen because of the fan

Once I decide if the Pro or Air in terms of performance for the long run

I realized I do not need more than 256 GB of storage because I always walk around with a drive or two anyway

But then I came to choose RAM and I did not know what to choose 8GB or 16GB? Can you guys help me? I've seen lots of videos on youtube and I still can't make a decision

    Storage Solutions

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 07:50 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm planning on getting an M1 MBA and also using it as my desktop via the Brydge vertical dock. Also just bought a Samsung CRG9.

I'll be getting the 256GB model, and will be storing most of my personal files on a separate hard drive.

I'm wondering what people's external storage set ups are like. Do you keep only recent/relevant files on the MacBook and other larger files on external drive? Do you keep everything on a NAS? Do you pay for iCloud storage?

I'd like to set everything up right the first time, so thanks in advance for ideas!

    Please recommend external monitor

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 03:45 PM PDT

I hooked up my new M1 13' MacBook Retina to my external monitor via VGA and the image looks washed out, at least when in mirroring mode. My monitor is old and only takes VGA. I was thinking of upgrading to a new monitor. I'm not a gamer, I don't need fancy speakers, I just want sharp text so that my eyes don't get strained. I'd rather pay less than $200. When I look online the recommendations are dizzying. Wirecutter recommended ViewSonic VA2456-MHD, but then when I look at Amazon reviews, a fair amount of users say don't buy it. Like I said, dizzying. There are just too many choices nowadays. What do you think?

Haptic Feedback on Trackpad not working.

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 07:18 PM PDT

Need help. I'm using MBP 2019 13". After the update to MacOS Big Sur 11.5, haptic feedback on my trackpad stopped working. Trackpad still works, as well as the look up functionality when I'm pressing it firmly, but there's no haptic feedback.

Could this be a software issue or hardware? I've already reset my PRAM and SMC to try if that'll fix it but no luck.

Can M1 MB play audio in sleep mode as iPhone/iPad can?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 03:28 PM PDT

When you listen to music on a mobile device, you would normally press the power button to put it into the sleep mode, right? Since M1 MB uses the same chipset as an M1 iPad, I wonder if M1 MB has the same feature.

MacBook Pro extremely slow and laggy after battery failure; is it possible to safely get it to work like before without replacing the battery? MacBook Pro extremely slow and laggy after battery failure; is it possible to safely get it to work like before without replacing the battery? (P.S. replacing the battery involves replacing many other components and the total cost for repairs will be the cost of a brand new mid-high range laptop)

This is a long post, so please bear with me while I try to explain the issues with my macbook.

So a few weeks ago, some keys on my macbook stopped working and I had to take it to the Apple service center. My battery was working fine before the service and there was an issue only with a few keys. Upon diagnosis, I was told that the battery is swollen and has got disconnected or something, and they will need to replace the battery, add a whole new keyboard and a new trackpad among other things, to fix my macbook. The estimated cost for the repairs was almost as much as a brand new mid-to-high range laptop (about $800), so I asked them to not go ahead with the repairs. However, I asked them to remove the battery, since a swollen battery might be dangerous, and besides, I had read that macbook pro's can be used without a battery (provided it's plugged in, of course), but they did not agree to remove the battery and said that the existing keyboard and trackpad will get damaged in the process, and the battery might explode which might not be safe for the person repairing and it'll damage the motherboard as well.

After collecting the macbook from the service center, I noticed that it's ridiculously slow now. The lags are very noticeable. I tried wiping all data and doing a fresh install, but that didn't help at all and my macbook is still extremely slow and laggy. For context - it used to take about 20-30 minutes for a full erase and fresh install before, but that took over 2 hours today!! Another example would be - my macbook used to boot up in about 30 seconds before whereas it takes a few minutes now. I tried checking the battery stats to see how bad the battery really is, but I'm not getting any battery info as you can see in the screenshots below (from system preferences and coconut battery):

    System Preferences

    coconut battery-1

    coconut battery-2

Even though the battery is still in there (and it used to work fine before the service), but the macbook does not work at all when unplugged; it immediately switches off upon unplugging the power.

I'm a computer science student, so I'll need my laptop to perform reasonably well cause I'll be taking systems courses and some computationally intensive courses like deep learning in the near future, but I can't afford to get my macbook repaired (needless to say - I won't be able to afford a new laptop too), so is there any way by which I can safely get my macbook to perform the way it used to, i.e., without being so slow and laggy?

I hope to get my macbook to work properly for at least another year.

Cant change search settings in spotlight

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 04:46 PM PDT

I have the following macbook: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) and running Catalina

Searches keeps searching whole mac rather than current folder.

I even went to preferences and changed search criteria to current folder and I am still getting results from whole mac. It even claims that it is searching only current folder!

This worked a few months but seems like I cant change search results

When using dual monitors on my Macbook, the secondary monitor will often randomly become the primary screen.. any help to fix?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 04:12 PM PDT

Hey guys. This might be a little hard to explain but I use a Macbook with a large external monitor. How I work is I'll keep my Macbook screen open and on, but my external monitor is my primary screen and then I use my Macbook screen for the finder or random stuff.

What happens is my external monitor will be my primary screen, and then just randomly my Macbook will switch to the Macbook as the primary screen.. sort of. If I were to manually switch the primary screen arrangement in the display options, the screens usually turn off for a second and then whatever is changed then becomes primary. So my Mac screens don't turn off and flip orientation, but anything that gets opened will then open on my Macbook screen (which is technically the secondary screen).

So for example, I use cmd+tab often to bring up the tab window to switch between programs/apps, so the way I'll usually find out the orientation flips is when I hit cmd+tab and the tab window pops up on my secondary screen (Macbook screen). New chrome windows will pop up then on the secondary, also when using programs (such as Photoshop or Word documents) where I hit "cmd+o" or doing any action where a finder will pops up, such as opening a file or whatever, the 'open' browser window will pop up on the secondary screen.

The only way to make it go back to where my external is my primary screen is to go into the display arrangement options and just click either mirror display on/off or switch the menu bar back and forth for a second. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to be annoying.

    Any help is appreciated!

2017 MacBook Pro finally died after I spilled water on it 6 months ago; what should I do?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 02:09 PM PDT

I spilled some water on my 2017 MacBook Pro (512gb 8GB Ram) about 6 months ago and today it shut off and began to smoke while it was plugged in.

I immediately took it to the apple store. They opened it up, found the water damage and said they could either fix it for $1300 or sell me a brand new one for around $1600.

I bought a new one, but I have 2 weeks to return it. I know there are new MacBooks being released soon(ish?) but I'm not sure if it's worth the wait to buy one of them. Essentially, I'm considering my options right now.

Option A: Pay local dude $500 to repair my 2017 MacBook. Return the $1600 MacBook (and maybe buy a new MacBook when they're released for around the same price?).

Option B: Simply keep the new MacBook I have now and junk the old one (apparently my old MacBook is only worth like $500 on eBay right now, in working condition).

Is there anything else I should be considering here?

    Thanks

My 2 months old MBA's hinge have gotten tight all of a sudden & it sometimes makes a little, faint clicking sound when I move the lid. I can no longer lift the lid with one hand. It was working perfectly fine before Is anyone facing the same issue? Should I seek apple support?

Is it safe to coonect my macbook to my monitor and to my charger?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2021 08:17 AM PDT

    Hi there,

I've got a monitor that supplies my MacBook with 15 watt. That's clearly not enough, and causes it to lose battery. Is it safe to plug in a charger while using the extra screen leaving it connected?
