Macbook is using macOS High Sierra but it’s the iMac compatible version

    Posted: 17 May 2021 01:01 AM PDT

My boss has this MacBook Air (11 inch, Mid 2011) and apparently last year he's given it to someone to upgrade its os manually since apple doesn't support this mac anymore and now it's on macOS High Sierra v. 10.13.6 and everything seems to be running smoothly except there's one little problem: the OS is the one developed for iMacs and now it doesn't recognize the trackpad and therefore we can't change the settings for its trackpad.

There's no backups of what it used to be before the manual upgrade available and tbh, I don't really wanna make any big changes to the preferences since it belongs to my boss and I don't really need more work drama.

Now the question is, how can I find a way to change the trackpad settings without making any big changes to the preferences?

How long can you "put off" updating OS?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 09:47 PM PDT

Simple question, I have a late-2013 MacBook Pro that works perfectly fine and am not looking to 1) part with it, and 2) drop over $1k on a new MacBook Pro (as nice as they look). I am pretty sure OS12 will not support my computer, so I am wondering if updating OS is one of those things you can just put off for a year or two or if there are real "risks" involved (aside from 3rd part app support). Thanks.

Microphone not working on Mac OS Big Sur

    Posted: 17 May 2021 12:48 AM PDT

I run Mac OS Big Sur in my MacBook Air Early 2015 model, model no. A1466.

For the past 3 months, I have been experiencing an issue of the in-built Microphone not working for programs other than Siri and Keyboard dictation. The microphone works fine for Siri and Keyboard dictation but, doesn't work for any other programs. I have checked all the required privacy settings and considered all the tricks available on the internet, and still, the problem persists.

But, my microphone works fine for other applications too, if I open System Preferences>Keyboard>Dictation in the background, and let the System Preference tab be open. But, as soon as I close the System Preferences tab my in-built microphone doesn't work again.

But, if I connect an external microphone, everything works fine, the above-mentioned problem doesn't persist.

I need a solution for this.

    BigSur Whatsapp performance

    Posted: 17 May 2021 12:21 AM PDT

Hi guys, I'm a user of the MacBook Air M1. Whatsapp works pretty well on M1 but sometimes even connects to my phone and has wifi, says to me, phone not connected, etc. After I made research some people have the same problem and I guess need to wait for M1 chip not Rosetta2. Anyone have any problem or how can I solve it? I think it does not show real m1 power on WhatsApp and also its rating is really low on Appstore.

    M1 SSD wear/tear

    Posted: 16 May 2021 08:21 AM PDT

    M1 SSD wear/tear

A few months ago people were freaking out over the M1 SSDs having exceptionally high wear and tear after just a few weeks of use. I was one of the few people who had no issues.

    14/02/21

    16/5/21

As you can see, my Mac seems to be unaffected by the M1 SSD issues. For reference, I am an app developer, my workflow is quite heavy, I also edit movies etc. I've had this M1 MacBook Air with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD since December 2020 and have used it everyday since then.

In contrast, my friend with a 256GB M1 Pro with 8GB ram who got his laptop a few weeks AFTER me has 60.2 TB Read and 47.8 TB written.

If you want to find out for yourself you can do the following

    1. Install smartmontools: brew install smartmontools
    2. Check your usage: sudo smartctl --all /dev/disk0

Why reddit running in Chrome on Mac with Big Sur doesn't not let me paste text?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 03:27 PM PDT

In last few days pasting text from external sources stop working. Is it Mac specific?

Is it a Reddit bug or new feature.

Pasting works on other Apps or Chrome so its Reddit specific.

Spotlight on my 2019 MBP will not index *any* of the standard built-in macOS apps. Even if I type the full app name, it doesn't appear in the results window. Third-party apps are indexed as normal. Any ideas about what is going on here? And yes, I've tried forcing Spotlight to reindex.

    Posted: 16 May 2021 03:23 PM PDT

Examples would be Calendar and TextEdit. On my Mac mini, I'd just need to type "Cal" or "Tex" into Spotlight and boom, there they are and I can press Return to launch them, but on my MBP, even if I type their full names, the apps don't appear in the results window. Same goes for *all* the standard macOS apps.

Both machines are running Catalina 10.15.7. I've tried reindexing Spotlight on the MBP, but it's made no difference.

And yes, I know there are other ways around it, but I'm curious as to why Spotlight doesn't seem to want to index any of the built-in macOS apps, but it's fine with all my third-party apps.

Are there are any way to downgrade to Big Sur 11.0.1?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 02:41 PM PDT

I was able to easily revert to 11.2.3 from 11.3 , however 11.0.1 installer app says that it is too old.

I created usb installer and erased disk, but still no luck.I have M1 Mac btw.And I have no Time Machine blobs.

Anyone know how to resize AFPS volumes?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 10:19 AM PDT

I recently decided to put Catalina on my 2012 15" MBP, but I wanted to keep Mojave in order to play all my 32-bit games. I decided to create a new APFS volume and install Catalina on that.

The problem I'm running into is that now I have 3 APFS volumes on my drive (Mojave, Catalina, Catalina Data) and all of my free drive space is pretty evenly allocated among those three volumes. Obviously my data folder should probably be the largest, with my two boot volumes large enough to hold my OS and system applications plus room for swap. I haven't found, however, a way to resize my volumes, and it's putting a real crimp in my ability to effectively use my computer.

Has anyone else run into this issue? What solutions did you come up with to resolve this?

How to enable 5.1 LPCM Audio trough HDMI on Big Sur ?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 09:11 AM PDT

How to enable 5.1 LPCM Audio trough HDMI on Big Sur ?

    Hi there,

I am testing a Mac Mini 2014 as a HTPC replacement, but so far I have not been able to make the HDMI audio to be 5.1 LPCM.

Using a MacMini Late 2014 connected trough HDMI to an Onkyo TX-SR607 in running a 5.1 speaker setup.

Using the Audio/Midi configuration utility within MacOS, I dont see any option to select 6 channels as an audio structure.

I only have the choice between 2 and 8 channel up to 24-bit 192khz.

But I need 6 channel (5.1) 24-bit 192khz, and dont have this option.

At the moment I have selected 8 channel 24/192, and opend the configure speaker option and selected 5.1 surround there.

When testing the speakers sending a test signal, they all work good.

5.1 setup chosen here, the speaker test works fine

Is there perhaps no way of selecting 6 channels, is this a limitation ?

What am I doing wrong here.. ?

Cannot chose for 6 channel, only 2 and 8 Why ??

Can you get Windows 10 for free from Bootcamp Assistant?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 11:57 AM PDT

The official Apple website says that you cannot get Windows 10 for free from Bootcamp Assistant, but on more than a few websites, it says that all you have to do is download an ISO file from the official windows website, which'll then allow you to put it into Bootcamp Assistant and then you'll just have to do some other stuff and then you'll be able to use Windows 10 or something.

Did anyone try this? Does it work?

Smart Mailbox that includes subfolder contents?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 11:31 AM PDT

Is there a way to create a Smart Mailbox that includes all the subfolders within a mail folder?

For example, I have a mail folder called "Customers". In it, I have a separate subfolder for each customer.

I would like to create an "All Customer Messages" Smart Mailbox that includes all the mail from every subfolder of the Customers folder. I can do it by adding a "Message is in mailbox <x>" rule for each subfolder, but that means every time I add a new subfolder, I have to update my Smart Mailbox rules. What I want is a "Message is in mailbox or sub-mailboxes of <x>".

Is there another way to accomplish the same thing?

After OS update (bigsur 11.2.3), documents won't open automatically unless I start their respective application. Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Once I open the application, I can then click on the document on my desktop, and it will open.
