Normal behaviour for WindowServer Process? Posted: 18 May 2021 01:50 AM PDT For work, I have to use quite some applications. By themselves, they aren't all that heavy but together they appear to be somewhat of a burden on my system. I am now seeing Window Server taking about 80-90% CPU. Is that normal for my workload? I was hoping someone could shed some light on whether I have a rogue process or incompatible piece of software running away with my performance. I currently have the basemodel 16" Macbook pro from 2019 (6-core i7). I run it with two extra 1080p screen attached (in additional to the retina display). On this, I run Safari with around 10-15 tabs. Microsoft edge with two tabs simultaneously (next to eachother). Furthermore, Slack, Zoom and TeamViewer are all running in the background. Usually I also have Spotify running as well. Under this workload, should I expect WindowServer to behave like this? My mac CPU is at about 75-90% idle, according to activity monitor. Still, machine gets pretty hot (99 degrees celcius occasionally, when at 75% idle). Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 17 May 2021 11:35 PM PDT Hey all - I was working with the terminal while going through the Odin project. (I'm quitting though because I'm driving into Python instead of Ruby. ) I'm paranoid that I messed something up and/or downloaded something I shouldn't have. I know I'm just being paranoid. To be safe, and because I like clean slates, I decided to a wipe/Big Sur reinstall. My questions are: 1- is anything and everything I do in the terminal "erased" once I do a reinstall? 2- is there anyway to have the reinstall process/files/partitions corrupted? "Add to Calendar" links need a functionality update. Posted: 17 May 2021 05:01 PM PDT Let's discuss! If you come across an event while on macOS, even one on Apple's own website, and there's a link to "Add to Calendar", all it does is download a ICS file. Then you have to go into Finder and open that file, add it to Calendar, close Calendar, then delete the file. You can have Safari set to automatically open all "safe" downloads but the problem is that this option is an all or nothing one so it can create more annoyances than it solves. I would think by now that there would be a way for calendar events to be added to your calendar without the in-between steps described above. Even being able to add them without the Calendar app needing to be opened. I know 3rd party apps like Fantastical offer work around solutions but I'm still expecting Apple to have a more built in stock function by now. [link] [comments]
MacBook air M1 bricked can't access startup options Posted: 17 May 2021 03:46 AM PDT I might have misstyped a command which ended up deleting system folders, and now i can't even access the startup options to reset it (holding power key when starting up) Do you know if there's any other way i could reset it? Thanks in advance [link] [comments]
Anyone else love that Apple took the time to make a decent desktop app for maps? Posted: 17 May 2021 07:57 AM PDT I spend a lot of time looking at maps, and on my windows machine that was primarily done via Google Maps on chrome. One thing I like looking at is transit, which Apple Maps does way better than Google (at least in the United States). This would often lead to me using my iPad when I wanted a better look at transit. But ever since I got my MacBook under 2 months ago I have absolutely loved using the desktop maps app, the integration with the trackpad is so much better than using google maps in the browser, and it runs much better (though thats likely more the fault of the MacBook than it is google's). Apple even made sure to support multiple windows and tabs, so you don't lose that functionally compared to using a map in the browser. Also, dark mode makes it the clear choice over google maps at night. Google maps on a computer screen is way to bright at night. And dark reader severely cripples the readability of the map so that is not an option. But Apple made a very good native dark mode design, that is in many ways better than the light version, in my opinion, even during the day (unless you are outside and it is too bright). Wish google made a native desktop app on the level of their mobile app. (Google Earth Pro is nice, but not the same thing) [link] [comments]

First new Mac. Question about separate admin account and standard account Posted: 17 May 2021 06:57 PM PDT Hi. I just received my first computer today. I've read a fair bit about using a separate admin account and a separate standard account, which seems to be a polarized topic. I understand that the admin account doesn't give me super admin privileges on purpose and that I would still have to enter the the admin password for privileged tasks. Even so I'd like to err on the side of caution. My question is, when I first start up my Mac I'll be creating the admin account. Should I log into my Apple ID, setup the permissions for the OS, install apps, and then create the standard account? And if so, from this point forward, do I just setup the permissions again for the standard account and onl use the admin account for installing apps and making updates? Also, for apps like Little Snitch, do the rules I create apply to both profiles? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments]

MacBookPro late 2013 - just upgraded to BigSur from Mavericks Posted: 17 May 2021 10:35 AM PDT So Iv been struggling with a maxed out 128GB ssd for years. I finally took the plunge and bought an external ssd that Iv literally stuck to the outside of my laptop case so the pc never goes without it. The ex ssd now contains my photo library that was taking up 50GB. I then upgraded to BigSur and have suddenly recovered another 25gb which is insane. Just wanted to encourage anyone else out there with a full ssd, take your photo library off your MacBook ssd and you will thank me forever. Also anyone thinking their Mac is too old, literally mine is sooo old, but now works like a charm. I was honestly just about to buy a whole new laptop, I had thought about upgrading the internal ssd which was going to cost hundreds, and I know the battery is shot too atm. So I was reluctant to spend much on a laptop that was on its way out anyway. Best decision Iv made, External ssd Move photo library off the internal ssd onto external And now any large files I just migrate off the internal and keep it running and booting freely Oh and I also earn free crypto using brave web browser Thanks [link] [comments]
Force click doesn't work in Safari Posted: 17 May 2021 10:32 AM PDT Sometimes, especially after suspend, force click refuses to work properly and doesn't show word hints or webpages preview on my MBA M1. It behave as normal click. I have to kill Safari, then it works again. It happens only in Safari. Anyone? [link] [comments]

Big Sur Notifications Customize Posted: 17 May 2021 12:39 PM PDT Hi all, I am on a Macbook Air running os 11.2.3. I just got a notification for a software update, and it was an 'alert' notification - did not go away until I dismissed it. How can I change the settings to make these 'banner' notifications where they automatically disappear if I don't address them? In system preferences --> notifications, I did not see a System Preferences alert and the notification came through from the System Preferences app with that icon as well. [link] [comments]
iOS Developer upgrading from Catalina to BigSur. Is there anything I should know before hand? Posted: 17 May 2021 12:33 PM PDT Hi. I usually wait until iOS updates and XCode version compatibility force me to update and the day has come. Is there anything I should know before I go through with upgrading? In the past, for instance, upgrading to catalina for the first time was a disaster and lead to a bricked system because I was running Little Snitch Firewall and I had to recover my system from a time machine. It's been a while since the 11.0 launch so I'm hoping everything will be smooth. Thank you. [link] [comments]
How are you managing Music Library between different machines? Posted: 17 May 2021 07:54 AM PDT I have a macbook pro which is my "source" - it's where I download/import media and manage playlists there. I have a Mac Mini (2014?) which is my Plex server and a Mac Mini M1 for my desktop (for work, mostly). [link] [comments]
Macbook pro crashes after wake from deep sleep after upgrade to Big Sur. Posted: 17 May 2021 11:38 AM PDT Might be related to Kingston SSD which worked just fine on Mojave. Turning off hibernation worked but battery drain became an issue. Early 2015 13" [link] [comments] |
