- QUESTION: Why do some bookmarks on Safari not show their logos for icons, but they do on the Touch Bar? I cannot work out how to get Facebook, Messenger, Reddit, Google Drive etc to show their logos, rather than the generic first letter icons - how do you fix this?

| Decades long Windows user considering the switch... Posted: 19 May 2021 10:34 PM PDT I'm a decades long Windows user (since '98) considering the switch from Windows to Mac. I've been considering switching for a while now, but the M1 threw a huge wrench in the mix. My feeling was that if the switch went poorly at worst I could just bootcamp and go back. That seems less likely now as it's likely Apple will not be focusing on bootcamp support. The reason I'm considering switching is that I am a huge iPhone user, and I would love the integration I'd get, as well as a seamless eco system. I could easily use Apple integrated services for all my daily driving, and I'm a hobbyist photographer so the platform would be fine from that perspective. I spend a lot of time fixing my Windows machine and as much as I am capable of doing it, I an sick of doing it. Is it true that Macs don't require the same level of care and feeding that a Windows machine might? My biggest concern for switching though is gaming. I know Macs are not built as gaming machines, are there any gamers out there (especially with M1s) who don't miss it or just found workarounds ? I do not like having multiple devices, so having a dedicated Windows laptop seems silly to me. Should I go for it, or are my expectations too high? [link] [comments]  | ||

| Using New iMac Keyboard On Other Devices? Posted: 19 May 2021 06:52 PM PDT So I just watched a review of the new M1 iMac and while its overall pretty cool, it's not for me. However, the keyboard included with it was very interesting to my needs. I have a 2015 MBPr that still serves me just fine for all of my needs (other than native 4K playback that my CPU doesn't support) but I really wish it had some way to utilize Touch ID. Honestly hate Face ID, actually have it disabled for login on my iPhone and only use it for logins once my phone is unlocked. Regardless, my laptop has neither option available. The new M1 keyboard has Touch ID built in and it is currently not available for sale outside of the iMac it is bundled with. I just called Apple and the sales rep was unsure as to whether or not this would ever be available to non iMac purchasers, let alone even function with other devices. Anyone have any idea as to whether this keyboard might function with Touch ID on my current laptop? [link] [comments]  | ||

I've checked in Sys Prefs that the option to "use F keys as standard function on external keyboards ...) is unchecked and well as unpaired & forget my keyboard in Bluetooth prefs. | Changing external monitor issue Posted: 19 May 2021 11:30 PM PDT I have a 2013 trashcan that I was using 2x Apple thunderbolt displays on. I've recently bought 2x 4k screens which are connected via DP. They work just fine and I like the extra desktop space and the reduced bezels. However, there's a small problem that I've not figured out. When the computer is powered up and starts the boot kernel where you log in to decrypt the drive and then the OS loads. I have no video output, both screens are off, however it has loaded the boot kernel so I can just switch the machine on, wait a bit, type in the password and then the OS loads and the screens come on as normal. If I boot into recovery mode the screens come on as you'd expect, so this is purely an issue on the boot stage. I've had a look to adjust screens, reset profiles, all those things, but they only affect what's happening when you're in the OS (11.3.1) not at that login screen. I've had a Google and whatnot and there's a loads of tips about problems with external displays but none that are relevant to what I'm doing. I know that if I wiped the machine and installed it fresh then it would be fine, but there's a config or something that I've not been able to locate. I've tried the 3-finger and 4-figure salute on power up which made no difference, as well as removing caches, prefs etc for monitors as well as profiles for the old screens. I'm being a spaz and missing something, if this was Linux I'd have more of a clue. Any pointers would be helpful, thank you. [link] [comments]  | ||

I installed one menubar app that lets me add apps to the menubar but no bookmarks (only .app files). I didn't use a resort point, and I don't back things up. I can't seem to find anything on the drive. I installed OmniDiskSweeper, and it's not even showing anything beyond the system files, as expected. A disk utility first aid brought up nothing. Anyone know what's going on? [link] [comments]  | ||

| Big Sur Screenshot/Quicktime stranded movies Posted: 19 May 2021 05:31 PM PDT You can call it a feature Screenshot records your screen even when you did't explicitly ask for like accidentally clicking on record. It will stop recording if you start Screenshot and click on Stop Recording otherwise it keeps on recording and could create large Mov files. If stopped it moves files via desktop to your visible Documents folder It stores working recording in a hidden folder: DISK_NAME/Users/USER_NAME/Library/ScreenRecordings If you shut down a Mac these movies will be stuck in above hidden folder I found 40GBs in my. Use Go to folder to look in this hidden folder I look in Screenshot and Quickplayer there is nowhere I can find to set its working folder to a visible one. | Problem with thunderbolt 3 > display Posted: 19 May 2021 02:16 PM PDT I had issue on the past with USB-C (3 different adaptors) when the speed was drooping to around 120Mb/s instead of 940Mbps, when I was connecting the same USB-C to ethernet adaptor on my iMac instead, I have the full speed, no problem. I send the computer for repair, they couldn't replicate the issue... I kind of give up on it but now, I can't even connect to an external display ! I bought a new Belkin USB-C to HDMI adaptor from the Apple Online Store. The title is USB-C but the tech mention "Connections: HDMI, Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)" It was working fine when I plugged the first time to a 5K ultra wild LG 49inch), I was even able to scale to 5k (I know the adaptor is supporting 4K at 60Hz but perhaps it's support 5K at 30Hz?) but then after rebooting, nothing. I have this same display connected to my iMac with a thunderbolt 3 cable, so I decide to unplug the thunderbolt 3 cable from my iMac and connect to my MacBook Pro but nothing detected (even in system preference>system report>thunderbolt/USB4 device tree I did reset SMC/NVRAM, I did format the SSD and restart as new, no change. Shouldn't time machine bring me back to exactly how my system was? I still have the new admin user I made from when I changed my home folder name and my home folder is under the new name post time machine backup. I still have the backup from OS Catalina. Could I just use that to revert to last week with my older home folder? This would be fine save for some garageband additions I have made. Thanks for your help! [link] [comments]  |
