Why I am shifting to the native Notes app Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:05 PM PDT Hello everyone, I have a 2017 MBA that I've been using for the past three years. I use my laptop mostly for research jobs and graduate work, so a good note-taking app is essential to me. Over these years, I've tried a bunch of different note-taking apps that are usually recommended: Evernote, Notion, Joplin, etc. There are always trade-offs that one has to make in choosing among these apps. Evernote's free version is rather limited, and the subscription costs a lot for a student. It also has a very cluttered interface that I found frustrating to deal with (that was long ago, so I don't know if it applies for the current version). Notion has a clean and uncluttered interface, and the functionalities that it offers is very attractive. But it has a learning curve, and you have to spend enough time to learn to use the app before you can actually use the features and functionalities that it offers. And Joplin has its own niche group of supporters who stan Markdown, but the learning curve is steep. And while you can choose to disable Markdown and use it as a WYSIWYG note-app, why would you do pick Joplin for that? Any other app would do. So I've been using a combination of Microsoft OneNote (as a holdover from my Windows laptop days) as well as the native Notes app. My rough split is this: OneNote stores all my long-term notes. It's what I wrote my Master's thesis in, and I have a lot of research notes stored in it. The Notes app is for quick notes that I take while I'm in a meeting or when I have a sudden idea that I need to note down. Now, this was fine initially, but it started to become a problem because my notes are now scattered over two apps instead of one. In my opinion, the most important benefit of OneNote is Notebook/Section/Page/Sub-page structure to organize my notes. On the other hand, the formatting on OneNote is limited in an awkward way: it has too many options to be a simple note-taking app, but not enough options to become like Word with the notes structure. And the text boxes add a layer of annoyance that requires extra time and effort to arrange. Ideally, a note-taking app should not draw too much attention to itself. It should have enough features for your use-case, and must otherwise stay in the background, so that your note-taking experience alone is in the foreground. The app should not be laying any further burdens on you, since note-taking is already a mentally intensive task (for example, when you're in the middle of a meeting or a burst of inspiration). I've found that the native Notes app found in MacOS does all this perfectly, and the updates that it received in Big Sur have improved my user experience of the app. It has everything that I need in a note-taking app. But what has really pushed me over to shift almost entirely to it is the snappiness of the app. Every other app, whether Notion or OneNote, takes too much time to open and load. That time is crucial when you're in a meeting or in the grip of inspiration. They're not as fast as the Notes app in shifting between notebooks or pages. Of course, my experience could largely be because of the old Intel processor in my laptop. Perhaps these apps are just as snappy as the Notes app in the M1 devices. However, for my use-case, I've decided to shift all my notes entirely to the native Notes app. I enjoy working on it, and I'm no longer frustrated when I copy-paste text from different sources and find my notes in a formatting mess. It's a quick, clean, and functional experience. What do you all think? Does anyone else feel that the Notes app is highly underrated and needs more love? [link] [comments]
Disabling Bluetooth on Big Sur Posted: 01 May 2021 02:38 AM PDT Hi: Does anybody know how to disable Bluetooth on Big Sur? I imagine it would be similar to scripts/commands people use to "reset" their Bluetooth device however the ones I found doesn't work for me as every time I tried to unload the kext it complains that they are in use (I have already unloaded the bluetooth daemon using launchctl). I have a macOS guest VM that's running under Big Sur and I want that VM to have control of Bluetooth instead of the host. On Windows 10 it works fine as long as I disable Bluetooth under device manager, but on macOS I have not been able to disable it entirely (simply turning Bluetooth off in System Preferences is not sufficient). When I try to share it out VirtualBox it complains that the device is not found. I think as long as I can disable the bluetooth daemon on Big Sur and also unload all the bluetooth related kernel extensions, it should work. Thanks in advance for any insights you can provide! [FREE] Recommend Screen Recording Software for macOS Big Sur Posted: 01 May 2021 02:38 AM PDT Please recommend FREE Screen Recording Software for macOS Big Sur. Like OBS, but that also requires a plug-in like Screenflick which also has audio disturbance during the end of recording. While in Windows, OBS is a simple software like just download and record. QuickTime Player's screen recorder records whole screen WITHOUT AUDIO and also has a large file size. Please recommend. [link] [comments]

Safari bookmark folders lagging when opening on 11.3? Posted: 01 May 2021 01:59 AM PDT Could anyone confirm that bookmark folders in Safari are lagging pretty hard (~1sec after press) on 11.3? My friend is on 11.1 and his seems fine. I tried disabling all extensions and it was still lagging so it's definitely not some extension causing this. [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:19 PM PDT Windows Convert new to MacOS and still learning the basics. I have a few questions regarding photo storage, since that makes up the bulk of my personal data I'll be bringing over to Mac. On Windows I've been storing my photos in a traditional nested file format. I have a single folder that contains sub folders of years, and some of the years are then further divided into months. I do not use any cloud storage systems (and do not plan to), and I back up these photos from my PC every so often by just copying it over to an external HDD. Now from my understanding, the best way for me to maintain this system would be to just copy this ulterior photos folder onto my Mac, and access them through Finder, similarly to how I did on Windows with Windows Explorer. This would allow me to easily maintain a backup on an external drive as well. I was initially going to import these photos into the Photos App, however I then learned that the app pushes everything into a proprietary database, one that would make it hard for me to back up and bring my photos out of if I one day decide to leave the Apple ecosystem. This is why I'm more a fan of a traditional folder method in the above system. My questions are:
Any and all tips are greatly appreciated! Just want to make good moves from the start to keep this computer organized and avoid issues like duplicates, etc. Thanks again! [link] [comments]

How do I rearrange folders and files within a Finder window? Posted: 01 May 2021 12:26 AM PDT Disclaimer: I'm relatively new to Mac. Coming from Windows, I'd usually drag and drop folders between other folders (or files between other files) and it would just work. I have arrange by or sort by set to "None" so I don't know what the issue is. If anyone has any advice, thanks in advance. Also, if anyone has a good resource to learn more about Finder, please drop a link :) [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 11:10 PM PDT I noticed since i got my mac mini m1 that the process Photolibraryd writing lots of data to my SSD disk, like around 50 - 100gb per day (and around 70gb read). Posted: 30 Apr 2021 10:19 PM PDT So frustrated, I feel like I've tried every trick in the book. Every time I try updating to the new OS, I get some sort of timeout error. I've tried safe mode, recovery mode, tethering to my phone during the update. The latest error code I received was, "the operation couldn't be completed pkdownload 8 error"... but my wifi has been working fine. Any ideas? [link] [comments]
Location Services Are Disabled After Every Restart on MacOS 11.3 Posted: 30 Apr 2021 09:49 PM PDT I have a Late 2015 iMac running MacOS 11.3 Every time I restart or update MacOS, Location Services is disabled and the Apps in the Location Services list disappear. I then have to open and grant permission to each App individually again. Tonight I did an Internet Recovery install of MacOS 11.3 hoping it would fix the Location Services problem. It didn't. What's causing this and how can I fix it? Thanks for your help everyone. [link] [comments]
intermittent internet connection Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:47 PM PDT On my wife's 2017 MBA (Mac OS 11.3) for the last 3 weeks the internet connection intermittently fails although there are wifi signal bars indicated. She opens the lid, (no matter how long she waits) clicks on mail or safari and nothing happens until she toggles the wifi off then on. When using the ethernet to usb adapter, the same happens with the apps until the adapter is unplugged. I am baffled. Any help or advice? [link] [comments]

Wifi issues after updating Macbook Pro to Big Sur version 11.3 Posted: 30 Apr 2021 08:38 PM PDT Wifi Keeps dropping. I contacted apple support multiple times to no avail, and they want me to send me computer in. EDIT: it happens anytime I open Safari, so it's definitely a bug. Thank you lec0saire for the help. Sometimes normal people are better help than Apple Support. [link] [comments]
Having trouble with notifications. Posted: 30 Apr 2021 08:25 PM PDT MacBook Air M1, Big Sur 11.3. For apps that I want notifications for, I have it on the "banner" setting, and have all options checked except for the one that adds a dot on the icon. However, I never get notifications. Or, almost never, but I never get them the correct way. For example, I never receive calendar notifications (Fantastical). Some notifications end up on the side menu thing (forgot what it's called, new to Mac), but I've never seen them appear on the screen like they're supposed to. Am I doing something wrong..? Would be nice to get calendar notifications at least... [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Apr 2021 08:23 PM PDT Good day. Would just like to ask on workarounds for this. Uninstalled iMovie last month, then tried downloading again from app store. Internet connection is fine, have space on my macbook air, but it's just stuck in the app store with the circular download progress around the square button, no movement or not the least bit filled. I am currently running Mac OS Catalina 10.15.6 (19G2021) on MacBook Air 2015. Thank you in advance. :) [link] [comments]
2015 MBP safe to upgrade to Big Sur? Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:05 PM PDT Hi everyone, I have been holding back on updating my current macOS to Big Sur after hearing about older MBPs getting bricked during installation. I'm wondering if subsequent updates have made it safer? If not, what are some precautions I can take in case there is a problem? Has Apple decided to service MBPs that get bricked due to OS updates? Current system is a 2015 MBP 13" running Sierra. Thanks. [link] [comments]
