For non-artists, why do you prefer an iPad over a laptop?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 01:43 AM PDT

I'm just curious why other people prefer using an iPad as their main (portable) computing device, over a traditional laptop.

For me, I love how portable an iPad is. When I use a laptop, I feel like I have to be "plugged in" to what I'm doing; in other words, I have to really dedicate my attention to using a laptop, since it's bigger, and more of an "event". With an iPad, I can just leave it on my bed, next to me, and use it at-will.

I also really enjoy using the touchscreen, and just really love how the iPad feels in my hands. The whole experience is very intuitive and almost visceral. I'm also so used to being on my phone, that an iPad is just a larger, more capable version of that experience.

    iPad M1 Reviews Mini-Rant

    Posted: 19 May 2021 07:42 PM PDT

Just watched several of the iPad reviews released by the typical group of tech youtubers and I can't get over the focus on photo/video editing.

I find it hard to believe that the average iPad customer is using photoshop/iMovie etc. extensively. And I get that this is what these reviewers do for their job so obviously it's something they would notice/test but it just seems odd that they choose to highlight it in every iPad/Mac video review.

Obviously it's easier to see performance improvements when showing something render in one of these apps versus showing how the Facebook app performs, but honestly just say it's ~20% faster or whatever and most people will get the message. And then dedicate more time in the video to real everyday use cases.

Why isn't there a nice magnetic stand with charging and/or passthrough? I just want to have a 12.9" "desktop" like setup. I can't believe Apple doesn't make something like this!

All I see is these holders on Amazon that don't look that great IMO.

Can you scroll and do gestures with the Magic Mouse 1 on an Ipad Pro. Heard there's an issue that scrolling was disabled after IOS 13 on the MM 1st gen, is that still a thing?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 12:03 PM PDT

I'm looking for a magic mouse but I don't know whether to go for the 1st or 2nd gen. Then I read about this issue in a year old Reddit thread and so I don't know if the 1st gen is even an option.

Flash drive that works w/o extra power

    Posted: 20 May 2021 10:39 AM PDT

Going to be picking up a good deal on an iPad Air 4 and looking for a USB-C flash drive that will work without needing to provide any kind of extra power. Will be using Infuse to play videos off the drive (which from what I can understand fully works). Thanks.

    Teachers with Ipads?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 02:22 AM PDT

My school is moving to one-to-one devices with Ipads next school year. I am wondering if there are any teachers who use Ipads for school and how their experience has been? How do you use the Ipads in your classroom?

Also, should I also get an Ipad? I will have a Macbook Air, but wondering if I should have the same as my students as well.

Are there any apps to use iPad as a second display for Windows that don’t require a driver to be installed?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 12:18 PM PDT

I want to use my iPad with my Windows laptop from work but they won't allow the drivers to be installed that most programs need. Is there a way to do this without having to download a driver to the pc?

How to access files from pc on an iPad wirelessly. Prefer access, not transfer, as my iPad has limited space for what I need to do.

    Posted: 20 May 2021 01:25 PM PDT

I would also like an option for file transfer. But mainly need something to access The files on the original device, my windows laptop. Because I have to access a large amount of files on an external hard drive and organize them.

Best collaborative note taking app with Apple Pencil?

    Posted: 20 May 2021 02:41 AM PDT

We're looking for a collaborative iPad note taking app to use in meetings with Apple Pencil.

We want to use the same app in meetings with third persons to take notes collaboratively and pass each others notes without disrupting the third person.

Here is what we look for:

    1. Collaborating swiftly on the same document live.
    2. Working on vertical pages with the ability to add more pages below (or infinite scrolling).
    3. Having access to a shared file structure. We have a growing archive of meeting notes under different folders.

So that we could have such a workflow:

    • We hop in a meeting
    • One of us create a document in the shared folder
    • The other opens the new document as well
    • We work on the document together taking notes
    • Occasionally we pass each other handwritten messages on the same app
    • After the meeting, we rename the document and discuss it together

Do you know an app that has all the 3 features we look for?

    ---

We haven't tried Explain Everything, GoodNotes, Notability, ShowMe or other alternatives we're not aware.

    Here's what we've tried:

    Microsoft OneNote

    • Has about 10 seconds lag between users -- too much for us.

    Inky

    • Document structure and page setup is for drawings, not suitable for collaborative note taking.

    Microsoft Whiteboard

    • Works to some extend but buggy. Crashes and freezes frequently.
    • Infinite whiteboard is not the best page type for our use case.

    Scribble

    • The best one we have tried for our use case, satisfies (1) and (2).
    • Magic pen with temporary ink is a nice feature for drawing attention of the other party.
    • Lack of having a shared folder structure works against us.
      • It's a pain to share documents with each other at the beginning of each meeting.
      • The documents are not organized in a file structure for organizing and archiving them.

    Multitasking

I recently got an air 4, but I am not at all impressed by the fact that it does not handle multitasking well, the apps keep refreshing every now n then. Do u guys have a similar opinion? Or is it different?

Will the Logitech Combo Touch iPad Pro 12.9” be available tomorrow to pick up at an Apple store?

My dad is getting his first iPad this weekend. What are the features I should introduce him to?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 09:36 PM PDT

Since he already owns an iPhone he won't start from zero but I still wanted to help him make the most out of it (he doesn't have any kind of desktop PC btw). It's the iPad Pro (5th Generation) w/ Apple Pencil (2nd Generation) and Smart Keyboard Folio.

So far I've thought of these: • Continuity between iPhone ⇆ iPad (Clipboard, Safari Tabs) • Introduce him to Apple Pages so that he can use his iPad to create documents • Use the Files App properly • FaceTime with Center Stage feature • Split View + Slide Over (though I'm not sure if this is a bit too complex for beginners) • Widgets for Home Screen • Apple Pencil: Fill out PDFs, create quick notes from lock screen, scribble, double tap to switch between pencil / eraser • Smart Keyboard Folio: Shortcuts like cmd+H, cmd+space, cmd+Tab • And of course I'll install all the apps he's currently using on his iPhone

Is there anything you'd add? Thanks in advance!

Torrenting on iPad / Remote Access to iMac

    Posted: 20 May 2021 02:32 AM PDT

I currently have a 2020 iPad Pro which I use as my main computer and a mid 2014 iMac purely for downloading torrents and streaming media to my Apple TV/iPad It is too old to support sidecar. I have set up my iCloud Drive to my downloads folder so all content is accessible on my iPad Pro. I was just wondering if there was an easy way to either download torrents direct to the iPad (as the current solutions are cumbersome and often require a subscription) or use a RD client to remotely access my iMac (which is pretty much just sat in the corner of the room looking sad) any and all ideas welcome, apologies for potato speak

    Magic keyboard in lap?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 07:18 PM PDT

My 2021 1TB 12.9 pro will be arriving on Friday and I'm more excited about it than you'd expect from someone my age (hint: started programming on a TTY and handled punch cards and paper tape 🤓). Anyway, I'm considering picking up a Magic Keyboard but from the photos I've seen that setup doesn't look lap friendly. Looks like it'd just teeter trotter on a lap, be top heavy and generally unstable.

But I could be totally wrong...

So, owners of the 12.9, how is the Magic Keyboard using it on a lap sitting in a comfy chair?

    Camera tracking on new iPad

    Posted: 20 May 2021 09:02 AM PDT

Hey all, had a question, not sure if anyone would know… but will the new feature on the new iPad pro that allows the camera to follow the user come to the previous iPad pro (2020)? It seems like it could work on both, but haven't heard anything about that.
