Just got my first MacBook , so sorry if I am a bit worried ..can someone with more experience help me with some peace of mind?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 11:47 PM PDT

    1) how do MacBooks deal with humidity?

My room is very small and gets both very hot and very 'humid' easily (can't keep the windows open because it rains most of the time) ..sometimes there can be a towel drying up on the radiator too, but the windows don't fog up ..just the air that gets heavy

    2) following up the previous question, using my MacBook for an hour while in a car with other people (windows up as it rains outside, it's UK) and the windows fog up, anything to worry about?

    3) I place my MacBook on my bedside table but I accidentally hit the table with the door this morning (the room is very small).. although the MacBook didn't get hit, will the shock damage anything internally? The door was slammed kind of hard.. I guess the shock is comparable to as if it dropped

Sorry for the long questions, any peace of mind on how much these pretty MacBooks should be babied is much appreciated

16inch MBP or 13inch with eGPU?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 11:12 PM PDT

I'm looking to get a new computer, my current one has probably about a month or so left on it and I want to make a decision before it gets too bad. I'm a bioengineering student so I code a lot and do a lot of 3D modeling and I also have a YouTube channel where I do a lot of editing. Nothing crazy, just 1080p stuff usually about 10 minutes, but I might upgrade to 4K eventually and I'll need something that can keep up with my workflow decently well since they sometimes tend to get around 20-30 minutes and I'm trying to upload weekly.

I understand that the 16" is probably the better computer, as it's more powerful with the bigger screen and the better speakers and battery and dedicated GPU and all that, but the formfactor is just a little bit too big for me to be comfortable and I think the 13" size would really suit me better. I don't necessarily need portability, since I'm almost done with school and everything's online now anyway, but I went to test the 16" out in-store before all the COVID stuff happened and it was just such a behemoth.

I've looked into eGPUs and they seem like a decent option, I'd probably get the Razer Core X since that seems like the most reliable and I'd start with a decently priced lower end GPU and then over time upgrade to something more powerful if I ever need it. I like the option to upgrade later on, since I want a computer that can last me a solid 7-8 years especially at this price point.

Would you recommend me going with a $1800 13" with an eGPU or should I just get used to the size and go with the 16"? How worth it are the GPU upgrades on the 16" and roughly what's the longevity for each of them? That's a bunch of questions sorry, any help would be appreciated, thanks!

In Activity Monitor, I see chrome_crashpad_handler using almost 50% of my CPU power on my Macbook Air (2020), plus fan on and battery draining like crazy. I don't use chrome - please help!

    Posted: 11 May 2021 05:33 PM PDT

I have deleted chrome from my computer a while back, but on activity monitor, I see this chrome_crashpad_handler using a ton of CPU power all the time. My macbook air is basically brand new and always has a fan blasting and I can't get this crash pad thing to go away. A google search of this doesn't bring up anything useful either :(

    Any help would be amazing!

    Help needed with Preview!

    Posted: 11 May 2021 08:51 PM PDT

I have scanned images (jpegs) that I need to straighten for a work project. I am familiar with the editing capabilities of Apple Photos, but Preview sucks!!!!! Is there any way to straighten these scans, let alone crop them?! I know how to crop with Preview but it's so bad. Are there any alternate suggestions for apps to edit photos and/or ways I could do this in preview? Also—how do I change default photo editor in Mac?

    Accessories on their MacBook

    Posted: 11 May 2021 08:14 PM PDT

Hi, does anyone here have any accessories on their MacBook (e.g. screen protector, keyboard cover, trackpad cover, webcam cover)?? What do you gain from them? What are its pros and cons?

I'm actually considering getting protectors and covers but I read on some threads that keyboard covers can affect the laptop when closing the lid, and there's also about screen protectors being safe. Need some opinions here thanks!

M1 MBA as a secondary device? Question

    Posted: 11 May 2021 12:09 PM PDT

I'll be working from home for the foreseeable future, and have a nice desktop PC that I really like. I'm thinking about getting a refurbished M1 MBA as a secondary device that I can use at coffeeshops and meetings, but it seems a bit expensive to have it as a secondary machine (I can easily just get a cheap Chromebook).

Does anyone else use their MacBook as a secondary device? Just curious. Thanks!

M1 MBP Just Shut Down Abruptly

M1 MBP Just Shut Down Abruptly

I know I didn't just spend over $2000 for this sh*t lol. It's actually kinda funny.

When I was watching like a hundred reviews on this laptop before buying, this particular problem was mentioned but it was said to be rare, so I never thought it would happen to me. Something to do with the new processor breaking out of its cocoon.

There I am, Premiere Proing and have like 30 tabs open, and my screen goes dark. At first, I thought I accidentally moved my pointer to a hot corner, but, then my trackpad stopped receiving haptic touch.

What's even weirder is that it was at 93% before shutting off and when it turned back on, it was at 97%... alright then. Luckily, my stuff was synced to the cloud.

Do you think the toucbar technology will be abandoned just as the one on the Lenovo X1 (2014) and it's grandpa the HP DV7 (2008)

    Posted: 11 May 2021 03:50 PM PDT

So I kinda laughed at people back when the hype hit on the MacBook Pro with the touchbar and fingerprint reader. I had that feature on my 2008 HP Pavilion DV7, though to be honest the fingerprint reader used the smart card reader, and the touchbar was static and only could control media.

However I suspect the touchbar on the Mac will be removed and bring back the function keys. It's the one hold off that makes me not even consider buying a Apple laptop at this point. Plus the gigantic trackpad which makes little sense to me. I am perfectly fine with my PC one, it supports the same gestures but I actually disabled them because I don't use them. I only do when using elementaryOS which is a Linux clone of Mac OS to swap between virtual desktops.

Best 500 GB SSD for a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 03:27 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro that's become really slow over the past few months, takes at least 5 mins to load up a screen. I'm looking for a 500 GB SSD card to replace myself (complete noob here), which SSD would you recommend?

Also, is there a YouTube step by step tutorial that you followed that helped you replace your SSD card?

Thank you all in advance 🙂

are there any paints to mask scratches on a macbook?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 01:48 PM PDT

i like to fix broken macs and dents are easy to remove with some pliers and practise but pliers often chip the paint so are there any paints that will cover them up, it doesn't need to be perfect, just good enough to not show up on camera

Some tips for a first time macbook user?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 09:57 AM PDT

I got a new MBA m1 and it's pretty awesome. But i have some questions regarding battery life and shutting down or not my MBA:

1)When should i be shutting down my MBA? Some people i know never turned off their macbooks, saying that it could harm your device.

2)When/how should i be using the charger/running on the battery for maximizing its life?

How do I know if/when my M1 Macbook Air is throttling?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 01:37 PM PDT

Quick question, but how do I know when heat is causing the M1 chip to throttle? Is there a temperature that triggers throttling or any app that would display when speed is being reduced?

ie, should i be monitoring one of these sensors?

I just got my brand new MacBook Air M1 today. I tried to sidecar with my iPad Pro 12.9inch… nada.

Been talking to Apple today, they've gone through a million options and now I've been told to reinstall masOS… which is gonna take 3 hours. They told me it won't take long but it's taking forever…

I just wanna play with my new device 😩
